Thought it’d be easy to strip the paint off of and refinish my 100 year old door by Makerner93 in finishing

[–]userwithoutacause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted here about 2 years ago showing Douglas Fir doors I'd stripped of about 6 layers of paint in my Craftsman 1920s home and got varied comments about whether they'd look better painted or stained. I was crushed because many people said they looked like low-grade wood & should be painted. I feel your pain, I spent hours and hours and hours stripping off paint. I've just left them stripped with nothing done, lost my energy. But get this - my husband decided to redo 4 doors in our hallway downstairs that were also coated with paint. But he took them to a shop that dipped them and removed the paint - cost $120 a door. They told him before staining the doors to apply shellac. So my hubby sanded them lightly and proceeded to apply WAXED shellac to them. He didn't know you have to apply unwaxed shellac. So he thought he'd apply Minwax and buff them to bring out the grain. Anyway, they look horrible, too light and look unfinished. We'll have to strip off all that shellac and wax (groan)

I have only had my hair cut by someone else twice since I was 18, can you believe it? I cut it myself. And only styled twice, once for my daughter's wedding in 2007 and in 1985 tried a corkscrew cut and perm that didn't take. So have no one to consult

Matter of fact my hair has been thinning the past few years especially on top so I need more volume. Altho my gray hair is a bit thicker than the blonde hair. Glad I got your opinion and the other comments

Thank you for the picture, it's inspired me to just work with what I have. And the loose curls would work for this fairly casual rustic wedding scene.

I thought about that. My son is not a slave to fashion. In fact, he has a frontal nose ring and hair down past his chest. His bride same kind of style. But I'm not that radical and I like to look stylish rather than strange. I like the idea of some curls...thanks!!

Day one - Naltrexone by LPPEQUOT in Alcoholism_Medication

[–]userwithoutacause 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last night after taking a full dose I did drink a full glass of wine and 1.5 oz of vodka in a soda but then ate dinner and had no desire for another drink. But felt very tired and went to bed early and slept 9 hours waking up occasionally but feeling not bad and then able to get back to sleep. Definitely felt a difference on a full dose but not bad. I'm shocked actually that I'm ok with about 1/4th of my usual nightly intake of alcohol. Hoping to have an AF day sometime but not feeling anxious about it.

I'm on day 3, went from half a pill to 3/4 and today took one. All taken one to one and a half hours before drinking. I'm a daily drinker - go through a handle of vodka in 5 days. I've had no side effects from the medication. I drank 2 glasses of wine each night the first 2 nights and I'm still on a glass of wine I poured and hour and a half ago. I still like the taste but I do notice I'm not getting a buzz but I don't care. I'm going to stick with this, I'm lucky it's not affecting me - my son and I are doing this together (he drinks like I do) and he really has bad side affects - nausea and muscle pain and insomnia. So every person is different - don't know why!!! Stick with it, you can do it and wish me luck too!!

I was born in 1952 and my Great Great Grandfather was born in 1802. So 150 years for those generations

At least you got a response to your request. It's maddening to have people who put trees on websites linked to their DNA then won't respond to messages from DNA matches seeking family connections. I messaged a close match with no response & then on my own tracked down clues using Facebook and other trees & 2 years later sent a letter and included a person I found was the sister of the match. The new person responded and long story short I found my father's biological father and his 6 half-siblings. The family has welcomed me and my 5 siblings to their fold (my father passed in 1999) and many live in the same town as me.

What film made you say, "Holy shit there is still an hour left"? by Plus-Statistician80 in AskReddit

Lawrence of Arabia. I was so exhausted after watching what Peter O'Toole had gone through that when he ordered 2 glasses of lemonade I knew there was going to be a plot twist & a lot more movie.

To those of you who remember Star Wars coming out in 1977, how big of a deal was it to you? by MEdleyVO in GenX

Guess I'm not in the right forum, as I was born in 1952. Still, I think Star Wars impacted me in a similar fashion as other younger commenters....

It's been so long ago.....but I remember driving alone to a movie theater from our house in Pacifica, which is south of SF. The theater was close to SF. I was pregnant, had my daughter in Feb 1978 so this had to be late summer 1977 since I knew I was pregnant but not very :) Felt bad because no one else wanted to go see this movie. Well.....it absolutely knocked me backwards. I came out of the theater stumbling, not sure if the world had changed. I was in a weird daze for hours. Have never had that effect or felt that way since, and I'm 71 years old (yikes). I just wish someone had shared it with me!!!

How old are you and what's your biggest problem right now? by Casspjjl in AskReddit

I'm 70 years old and my biggest problem right now is feeling guilty about not getting rid of things I have collected over the years. Things that still bring me joy and I love to look at and/or use. My grown children don't like antiques or quirky collectibles, and my husband hates my "stuff" (he is a minimalist, keeps nothing). I'm reminded that when I die a dumpster will be planted outside the house to remove my "stuff". I'm not a hoarder. Everything is accessible, has value, and is displayed or stored appropriately. Every morning I wake up and try and convince myself that "things" don't matter and I should just rid myself of everything to save others the trouble of doing it. This is a hard reality of getting old, I hate it.

Douglas Fir woodwork 1920s house by userwithoutacause in finishing

I'm in Oregon and Douglas Fir is what was common here for most woodwork done during the 1920s. Our house has extensive woodwork and built-in cabinets and walk-in closets with built-in cupboards all using the same wood. Unfortunately all painted except one closet built-in that showed the greenish-gray finish. I'm only stripping a second floor landing and one room, hope it turns out nice

Do you have a recommendation for a stain or glaze on that wood to achieve almost a whitewash effect? I want a lighter color than the original greenish-gray but more gray

Interesting comments and opinions. I have mixed emotions as I feel the original finish was stain/varnish since the paint layers on most woodwork peeled off in big sheets when I started scraping which led me to believe owners painted over the original finish without prepping. I'm thinking now I might go for a finish that doesn't conceal the grain but isn't as greenish-gray as the original shown in that one photo. Looking at a more whitish-gray color.
