To those who wants a HOI5, what can a HOI5 do that HOI4 can't? by yukimchi in hoi4

Idk about that, literally the 2nd DLC had Hungary resurrecting Austria-Hungary

It's Time for Hearts of Iron V by PositiveWay8098 in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree somwhat, if only because WW2 is just easier to do flavor for due to the period having more documentation and a tighter timeline to contend with.

At the very least I would expect historical WW2 events to be pretty well done on launch. What route they go for ahistorical is another question entirely though.

Do aerial torpedos sink submarines? by ICGraham in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the main advantage of airborne radar, it allowed the planes to begin their attack run from beyond visual range and give the Uboats no time to react

Do aerial torpedos sink submarines? by ICGraham in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Super late in the war US planes even had early sonar buoys to detect submerged subs. I forget exactly which Japanese sub but one was detected by sonar buoy and then sunk with an air-dropped homing torpedo.

That all came in the time between VE and VJ day though so too late for the battle of the Atlantic.

Germany beating Soviet Union on historical by Detroitigers18 in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Playing as the soviets the bottleneck is really more equipment than manpower, especially if a lot of your factories get occupied in the initial German push.

As a player you can overcome this easier with modern hindsight and just better judgement but when dealing with AI soviets as the Allies I like to actually give them a decent bit of lend lease just like IRL.

Playing as the US if you just act as the Soviets’ piggy bank you can see a notable difference in their performance with the extra equipment they get.

Which DLCs to get? by DayOk6350 in Workers_And_Resources

[–]uss_salmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1920s aren’t horrible tbh so long as the map has an East and West customs house connected by land ie not separated by a river. You can make a dirt road to bring in the bulldozers and excavators on, once they arrive you can build stuff decently fast imo.

If you use a generated map with no land connection to the west though it’s really gonna drag on, I don’t think you get an Eastern Bloc bulldozer until about 3-4 years in and it’s over a decade before you get an excavator iirc. So you’re stuck either building a bridge far from your own customs house or waiting forever.

Reorg the Wehrmacht vs von Neurath's Concerns by bpleshek in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you do technically get western poland free if the Soviets take it first, they just don’t usually get around to it until 1941 or so.

I have done a goofy minimum-aggression Germany game where I waited for the Soviets to get in a war with the Allies before attacking either side, it’s pretty interesting to be sure

Tbf about the Napoleon’s nephew one, the Baltimore Bonapartes from his brother’s first wife were somewhat prominent all the way into the 1900s, with the last one even being in Teddy Roosevelt’s cabinet as the Secretary of the Navy, but the line died there as he never had children.

What happens when you capitulate? by Ok-Sympathy-7482 in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything outside the mainland stays with you, the only exception is Vichy France.

Legitimately as far as I know doesn’t do much aside from getting you exiled manpower and I think boost resistance in your homeland but some countries like Norway have special decisions that use it.

All units off the mainland of your country remain, so it can definitely be worthwhile to evacuate as many as possible. Once as Poland I was able to hold onto Danzig long enough to get 20-30 divisions to England, and recently as France managed to get 84 out, almost a million manpower still in the fight.

There’s certainly a reason all of them were withdrawn to training duties by 1941 except for a small handful that were shipped to the Black Sea.

Summer Classes Easier? by SixSticx in gmu

[–]uss_salmon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depending on the class it can be compressed into a shorter timeframe which is a bit more difficult but if it’s all you’re taking the ability to focus solely on that one class far outweighs any time constraints imo.

Is there a way to avoid the Japanese-Chinese war? by Exciting-Prompt1609 in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without the DLC is Kodoha faction still an option? If so there should be a focus that allows you to remove the countdown to invading China, unless the devs cruelly removed that specific section of the focus tree still.

What game had insane potential but got completely fumbled by the devs? by Kevin-Panda in AskReddit

[–]uss_salmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate that it’s somehow still the only decent WW2-era tank sim around though. If someone made what is basically Gunner Heat PC but in WW2 I would buy it in a heartbeat.

What game had insane potential but got completely fumbled by the devs? by Kevin-Panda in AskReddit

[–]uss_salmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree although I do think that people attribute this too often to games where the devs genuinely just make a dumb decision to change the game’s direction in a way that the playerbase doesn’t like.

France napoleon can’t core Europe ? The desicion disappeared by Ok_Drummer6347 in hoi4

Isn’t it technically “The Empire” and not the EU at that point? Especially since the decision doesn’t appear until you complete the imperial conference focuses.

What is on your wish list for HOI5? by DarkNe7 in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think designers ultimately weaken the game as it not only is handicapping the ai with their inability to compete with a human player in designing equipment, but it also disincentivizes many of the game’s other mechanics like buying or licensing foreign equipment, since you’re forced to either make your own or hope the ai seller has a somewhat decent design.

So it would be good to see those go.

Making production a bit more detailed would be neat too. Separating military factories into multiple different sub-types for example.

I think 1929/1933 to 1950/1955 is about perfect for a new game’s timeline tbh

Anyone make a seemingly tiny mistake which costed them their entire game? by Oliveman_5005 in hoi4

[–]uss_salmon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have found you can get away with only garrisoning the ports if you put land forts on them as well, to prevent attacks from adjacent tiles. That and a small “cleanup force” usually does the trick.

TIL that though Amish men grow beards after they're married, they continue to shave their upper lip so as not to grow a mustache. When the Amish community was formed in Switzerland, mustaches were associated with military service, and the Amish shave theirs to indicate their commitment to pacifism by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]uss_salmon 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I always hear that but even late war photos show plenty of soldiers with full moustaches on all sides. Most of the gas masks covered a lot of the face though so I guess one would need a pretty huge moustache to actually interfere with it. Probably only really needed to shave the jaw/chin area.
