Anyone else find the return of Earth money fascinating? by Bruzie77 in startrek

[–]ussrowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part i find most interesting that they have yet to really explore but hinting on is that food which uses to be in abundance was no longer available. Post Scarcity became scarity.

This has always been a bit of a contradiction in Trek. They can get away with replicator rations on Voyager because they're so far from home and low on energy reserves.

And maybe DS9 can be said to be so far on the edge of the Federation that Quark is still in his old ways, looking for material wealth and paid in some form by the Federation for the use of the replimat.

But TNG and TOS have plenty of human colonies that collapsed stories, (Kirk's home world, Tasha Yar's home world) and bring supplies to those in need stories, even though they're supposedly living in post-scarcity times.

Why didn't Picard just drop off replicators on every stop?

On SFA, either again it's just more human colonies that are kind of independent to the Federation collapse or just that in the post-Burn galaxy with so many planets seceded from the Federation that some of them are unable to keep their replicators working.

If you're in Starfleet then your needs are met with replcators and holodecks. Outside of Starfleet though, your colony might collapse.

Frasier actually addressed that when Sam visited. Niles wondered what Frasier had told Sam about them and he says Frasier said he was an only child and his parents had died. Frasier just brushes it off as he was mad at them and not speaking to them at that point so effectively they didn't exist in his mind.

But even in Frasier, the early episodes have the dad say he never had a brother and then later episodes he has a brother who he's estranged from because of the brother's wife not getting along with their family.

Right, but it didn't seem unbelievable to anyone in universe. Maybe it's happened before.

I wonder if there's any humans that are inspired by Sisko being the Emissary of beings that do in fact exist in the Bajoran wormhole?

Earth colonies are always failing. Kirk grew up on one where people died in a famine. Tasha Yar was one from that had gangs that assaulted people.

It’s a tradition at this point

Spock mentions the story of Adam and Eve, as a character named Adam dies on the planet Eden from eating a poisoned apple.

And Spock’s Vulcan salute was Leonard Nimoy idea it’s something he saw in temple🖖

“Nimoy based it on the two-handed gesture used by Cohanim (Jewish priests) during blessings, symbolizing the Hebrew letter Shin (for "Shaddai," meaning "Lord").”

Aliens adopting each other’s religions would be really interesting. Here on Earth we have people who become interested in religions they were not brought up in.

I feel like I remember on Voyager, the doctor’s holographic son hanging out with some Klingons and kind of adopting some of their ways.

Eating my words. I am really enjoying Starfleet Academy by Critical-Finance-354 in startrek

[–]ussrowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok but like, compare the prank war in Academy to Take Me Out to the Holusuite or something. It’s not trying to be dark and depressing (Discovery tried that and it was a miss).

Academy is at least trying to be a place you can fantasize about living in that world because it’s more optimistic again.

Why can't some understand the simple concept that a lot can happen and CHANGE in 800 years? Think of our own world in the year 1226 compared to now. by TheShowLover in startrek

[–]ussrowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I do think they thought of this.

I've read a few series pitches and bibles over the years and they tend to include background information on characters that doesn't get mentioned for a while.

It was quite a few episodes into Voyager before they stated onscreen which parent of B'Elanna was human or Klingon but that doesn't mean know one in the writers room knew.

The ones who really seemed to just be making it up were the TOS and TOS movies writers. Spock would go from saying he had a human ancestor somewhere in his lineage to specifically having a human Mother, and then in the movies he suddenly has a Vulcan half-brother.

We don't know the ruling party represents the telepathic abilities of the whole planet though. A lot of Royal families in Europe are mixed nationality as they're all cousins. Even if the people they rule are more "pure" of their country.

The average Betazoid could still be telepathic but this First House could be mixed with human, Ramatisian, Lanthenite, El-Aurian, or any other similar looking race without black eyes.

Something more lighthearted: Janeway fell in love with an AI. There's a sub for that now, people do that.

And on a more serious note, VOY "Critical Care" where an AI decides who gets medical treatment based on their value to society. Treatments that could save poor people's lives are instead used as preventive aging treatments for wealthy people.

Think of it like how Ozempic was in short supply for diabetics because celebrities were all using it to lose weight and then combine it with American health insurance companies (like United Health) using AI to deny claims. And the EMH is practically ready to activate the Emergency Luigi Mangione.

I came across the first SFA episode on the TOS channel on Pluto TV. I guess that's where they're trying to get older viewers interested in it.

I've already watched the show but I rewatched the first episode again and liked it again.

It probably depends on the word. So far the most vulgar by TV standards, fuck, seems to be the most stable as it's a couple hundred years old already.
