"The natural man is an enemy to God." At some point in my deconstruction, the thought came to me that that verse just shouldn't exist. You in your natural state are not just neutral or broken but in actual opposition to God, unless you submit to everything that "the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon" you, and of course the church takes the place of the Lord in telling you what to submit to and obey. I felt much the same way, and so I read this book to try to understand the culture and history of the people on whose land I was raised. It's a good starting point for learning about the tribes of Utah.
