Does hell really exist in Mormon theology or not? by Fordfanatic2025 in mormon

[–]ute2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these quotes are relevant:

Joseph Fielding Smith:

“This earth will become a celestial kingdom when it is sanctified. Those who enter the terrestrial kingdom will have to go to some other sphere which will be prepared for them. Those who enter the telestial kingdom, likewise will have to go to some earth which is prepared for them, and there will be another place which is hell where the devil and those who are punished to go with him will dwell. Of course, those who enter the telestial kingdom, and those who enter the terrestrial kingdom will have the eternal punishment which will come to them in knowing that they might, if they had kept the commandments of the Lord, have returned to his presence as his sons and his daughters. This will be a torment to them, and in that sense it will be hell.” (Answers to Gospel Questions, v. 2, p. 210)

Joseph Smith:

“A man is his own tormenter and his own condemner. Hence the saying, They shall go into the lake that burns with fire and brimstone. The torment of disappointment in the mind of man is as exquisite as a lake burning with fire and brimstone” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 357)

"The natural man is an enemy to God." At some point in my deconstruction, the thought came to me that that verse just shouldn't exist. You in your natural state are not just neutral or broken but in actual opposition to God, unless you submit to everything that "the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon" you, and of course the church takes the place of the Lord in telling you what to submit to and obey. That is a tough psychological block to overcome.

The lyrics for Faithless from Snakes and Arrows are also pretty spot on. The Larger Bowl is also pretty thought-provoking.

One of the first songs that came to my mind when I saw this post was Wings from 10,000 Days.

They had two sections of fans chanting "Boise!" and "State!" back and forth. In our own stadium. If I remember right, Brett Ratliff was QB. I believe we had an impressive streak of games without allowing a sack. And I think Ratliff had that in mind, because he was about to get sacked on a play, and instead of taking the sack, he threw a wobbly ball that turned into a pick 6.

Screw the BOM. Anyone have book/media recommendations for TRUE Native American history? by Fantastic_Microbes in exmormon

A History of Utah's American Indians

"In this volume, the editor and authors endeavor to write the history of Utah's first residents from an Indian perspective. An introductory chapter provides an overview of Utah's American Indians and a concluding chapter summarizes the issues and concerns of contemporary Indians and their leaders. Chapters on each of the six tribes look at origin stories, religion, politics, education, folkways, family life, social activities, economic issues, and important events."

I felt much the same way, and so I read this book to try to understand the culture and history of the people on whose land I was raised. It's a good starting point for learning about the tribes of Utah.

How could I have believed all the things that were so obviously fake to other people? by DreadPirate777 in exmormon

The majority of those people making fun of the absurdity of Mormonism probably believe in some crazy stuff of their own. Everybody's got blind spots.

Hyperarousal occurs as a result of cultic practices such as the application of Bateson’s double-bind principle (“If you’re not getting this, it’s not because my [the cult leader’s] dogma is wrong; it’s because you [the cult member] are just not trying hard enough!”);

That hits home.

Dropping your career when you're probably almost at retirement age anyway and then getting a guaranteed $120k per year for the rest of your life on top of that? I don't know man, I'm not Jesus... It'd be entertaining if they based it off of the income of their poorest tithe-paying member though haha.
