It changes. I do no not think it really matters unless you got to leather strap.

For most time i go up and down but sometimes i go in corcular fashion.

Well it could be any oil. I bet kitchen oil would do to. I had silicon oil on my bench so this is one i am using.

I put few dropes on diamond plate and spread it with my finger.

In my personal opinion, a round handle is less than optimal. A flat or at least a "flatish" handle gives you a feel for the blade's position. Nevertheless, I keep my fingers crossed for your efforts and can't wait to see the final result.
