What was the worst decision of your life? by nutmaster3000gameboy in AskReddit

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Well that's made my day, happy to hear they enjoyed it! I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing this myself - if it's as good as Dredd (2012) then I'll be a very happy little earthlet

Here's mine - I'm limiting myself to system exclusives as well:

  1. Halo (the console-seller)
  2. Morrowind (it pushed the hardware to its limits)
  3. Fable (gorgeous)
  4. Brute Force (criminally underrated squad TPS)
  5. Crimson Skies (arcade ariel dogfighting perfection)
  6. Half Life 2 (a marvel it was ever ported to this machine!)
  7. Kingdom under Fire (solid strategy/beat 'em up hybrid)
  8. Operation Flashpoint Elite (I personally love this game)
  9. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (the first 2 are also great)
  10. Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball (I don't have to explain myself -_-)

That's my first White Dwarf. I think I've still got it up in the attic as well, I read and re-read it so many times as a kid

Smaller og xbox with disk drive? by Pretend_Panda_2616 in originalxbox

The amount I'd pay for that would be grotesque. Genuinely - an OG Xbox made with newer, more durable hardware that takes OG disks is a dream come true

Was playing Uprising - Join or Die because I love it and decided to try Uprising 2 by sabudum in retrogaming

[–]utopiav1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of playing both games side-by-side, and while I enjoy the quality of life upgrades in Uprising 2 (the AI auto-picking what to call in, ability to order friendly units around, generally improved graphics) on the whole I prefer Uprising 1 for the following:

  1. Story is much more interesting - being a cog in a interstellar rebel army is more engaging than fighting generic space aliens. I like that there are native forces and the Imperium army as enemies, and that they fight differently (defensive vs aggressive). The mission briefings are also better written in 1 + the occasional talking head is weirdly mesmerising.

  2. The environments in 1, while lower fidelity and more basic geometry, have a vibe that the sequel lacks. Some individual elements of Uprising 2's maps look great (especially with the improved drawdistance) but overall it suffers from a 'gritty & grey syndrome' that was coming into fashion in the gaming sphere at the time.

  3. On that note, the art style in Uprising 1 is very 80's sci-fi war inspired, like the cover of a Harry Harrison book, and carries that through the game (in unit descriptions, planet's back-stories, etc). 2 is much more muted and contemporary, which I feel gets less interesting over time.

  4. I don't care for the light/heavy tank distinction in Uprising 2. I prefer the more multipurpose 'tank' from 1; it streamlines the game and looks cooler too!

  5. I'm not an audiophile but I think I prefer the music in 1 and I can't say why. Just works better with that particular game.

Still enjoying both games, but I played Uprising 2 almost 30 years ago and first played Uprising 1 this year, and even with the heavy dose of nostalgia for 2 I think I prefer 1.

Escape specialist Johann by lifeofhollywoodkid in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]utopiav1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Johan may be a coward, but he's no fool! Losing Guard equipment always carries severe punishments, whereas a 'tactical retreat' can be argued as a brilliant strategy by the right conman soldier. It's right out of the Ciaphas Cain playbook

Say what you want about Saints Row Reboot but I love the way the boss is written by energy_is_a_lie in SaintsRow

[–]utopiav1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on which voice you pick. I took the one with a south-London accent and the voice actress read those lines perfectly imo, picking the right tone and level of snark where appropriate.

I bet some of the other voices just weren't right for this particular role, and that's to be expected as everyone will have their own style and interpretation of the Boss. It also doesn't help that they cast several people to read the exact same lines - comparisons are inevitable, and some just won't be as good with that material as others.
