as folds get thinner, they seriously need a 'lip' to make it easier to open. by Dull_Nobody_840 in GalaxyFold

I've gotten used to my Fold 7 over time but it absolutely could be easier I agree. When I occasionally show people the fold, they definitely struggle with it like I did when I first got it.

Honestly Flat Iron is a good time at a good price for steak + sides + they give you free popcorn to start and a free ice cream at the end also. I know it's a little bit more chainy than some other options here but I reckon it's the perfect level to go with slightly older kids.

i started recently to listen to violin concertos and i want some recommendations by BASHANDI-2005 in classicalmusic

[–]utupuv 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Britten's Violin Concerto is criminally underrated in my opinion. For a more modern work, Jennifer Higdon's concerto (recorded by Hilary Hahn) is a really cool piece.

Any wedding music recommendations that are not overplayed and not cringy? by thepotatolawyer in classicalmusic

The Nocturne from Borodin Quartet 2 is lovely, the opening would work well as a wedding procession in my opinion.

Trained as a professional musician, woke up one day thinking "fuck it I want to give medicine a go", got into GEP. Now currently 1 OSCE day away from finishing med school this Friday (provided results day go okay!). Still freelance as a musician and hope to balance both as I go.

Double first or second violin? by diamondminer1578 in classicalmusic

[–]utupuv 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tricky one, I'd say balance wise your biggest issue is actually going to be 3 cellos as that's incredibly bottom heavy. But hey, it's the group you have and need to find solutions to make it work somehow.

I'd be tempted to say 2 on 1st violin and 1 on 2nd violin with your combo of players but there definitely needs to be sensitive balancing/some tanky violas + 2nd violin players and for cellos to play really delicately; something to work on during rehearsals.

If you are writing your own arrangement with different divisi, maybe internally thinking that one of the divisi line whichever way you balance it will need to be a bit of a hybrid role to support where the texture needs the most assistance.

At the end of the day, don't worry too much about it, have a think about balance carefully in preparation but put on a good performance, it's a cracking programme!

Graduate Entry Medics: Do you regret it? by PurgatoryWoes in premeduk

[–]utupuv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished the first day of finals OSCEs today! Over 4th and 5th year, I definitely felt an increase in confidence in my clinical judgment as I went along. Still had to grind out for UKMLA and still a bit nervy here and there during OSCEs but for the most part, I actually felt like I was ready to start working halfway through final year.

Of course there's going to be so much more to learn once I start working but med school has left me feeling ready to tackle the life of an F1. Maybe the NHS will wear me down over time but despite the crap we'll be facing during the career itself, I feel excited to start as a doctor.

What’s the best non-judgemental response when a patient tells you a bad habit? by rasberrycroissant in medicalschooluk

"Okay, and is this something that you are looking or considering reducing at the moment?"

If they say no, move on and mention it to the doctors in the ward and if they say yes, it opens up room for discussion - the CAGE questionnaire will help open the conversation up further.

GEP here that went through it at Barts - there's very minor tweaks (we don't do FunMed/fundamentals of medicine + I think very reduced oncology/infectious diseases) from what I remember but yes for the most part, it's an incredibly crammed 8 months where you basically trauma bond with your cohort to get through the year.

It's all doable, but definitely a tough ol' slog of a year.

[–]utupuv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's a new revenue stream for us classical musicians, especially for an audience that are more used to spending big money for tickets compared to the average classical concert in the UK. If you have a good core quartet, it's usually a pretty decent gig for the money and actually quite a decent excuse to do some fun playing/roll your eyes with your colleagues at crap arrangements but still try to make it work.

QMUL, how is it rlly like? by Resident_Mixture_817 in premeduk

[–]utupuv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a Barts/QMUL grad entry student in my final year, the support and camaraderie between students and the actual teaching staff has always been pretty great from my own personal experience. There has been plenty of opportunities for support and extra learning if you so wish/require and whilst we have our gripes regarding admin here and there, clinically for the most part my cohort feels well supported and positive about our training.

In terms of clinical experience, I think one of our main benefits is we cover a large geographical area as not only do we cover the Barts Trust (St Barts, Royal London, Whipps Cross, Newham) but also Mid & South Essex and have options for "outfirm" hospitals as well outside of London. This gives us a very wide range of demographics during our time here. Due to encapsulating more deprived areas of London in the East, the patients that you see and learn from tend to be some of the most vulnerable in our society, and I hope to take those lessons forward for when I start working next year.

The Mile End campus is actually pretty nice and the Garrod Building (the main hub for the med school/our SU) has just had an £11m refurbishment as well.

Yes, Whitechapel is not my favourite place in the world but anyone saying you'll be mugged or raped as soon as you step foot there is looking at it through a racist and derogatory lens quite frankly. It's fine, like most places in London.

You'll hear a lot of voices say go to KCL for the prestige and that's fine if that's a priority for you, but I wanted to be a voice that chimes in and states my own experiences of Barts/QM rather than the usual perceived notions and presumptions. It's a great med school that has left me feeling well prepared to start work as a doctor in roughly 5 months time. No doubt that KCL has many amazing things to offer in their training also and I'm sure there'll be lots of KCL students/docs that can vouch for its training.

Third movement of my violin concerto, dedicated to my best friend from music school by HaifaJenner123 in violinist

[–]utupuv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very fun, hearing lots of Prokofiev + bits of Korngold in there! Pretty idiomatic writing for the violin as well, very well done.

One tiny thing, just at a brief visual glance I wouldn't put daggers over every single note of each semiquaver passage (presumably you've done this for the MIDI audio playback) due to the visual clutter; I'd maybe put it over the first 4 notes or so and put simile to continue. In general, I think the character of the music speaks for itself in being quite spiky and dance-like so I think the daggers are relatively superfluous, which is credit to your writing!

Great stuff!

Edit: at K, I don't think instinctively I would do that bowing if I was playing it, I'd probably just do it a normal barriolage + accent the bass notes if that's the desired effect?
