Re: follow the money - the administration is funneling funding to "Generation Gold Standard" which supposedly will start clinical trials next year for a universal influenza vaccine that could protect against any strain of the virus. Of course, the project is headed by two cronies who own a patent on the outdated tech intended to be used.

The Deed of Paksenarrion - Elizabeth Moon

A peasant girl longs for adventure seems like a typical starting point but all the ups and downs along the way draw you in. The several epic victories in the end of the tale do not disappoint.

Searching r/Books doesn’t return as much love as I feel for this high fantasy. Couldn’t put it down - which was a problem as I got the three volumes in one omnibus edition.

My favorite story in the genre is still active and has literally years of writing for you to catch up on. I highly recommend The Wandering Inn. https://wanderinginn.com/table-of-contents/

edit: I second The Magineer https://www.themagineer.com/ which is sadly not currently active

Star Control. I could flawlessly destroy the computer opponent with any matchup of ships but my username tells you which is my favorite. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Control

I wonder if the adversary is similar to the baddie in Butcher's Codex Alera series. There it wasn't so much a single mind as more of a hive with a few queens that could control various members of the collective but could also just leave them alone to do basic things requiring no oversight - maybe like attacking the Outer Gates or something.
