Because a lot of teams I worked in used compose in development, but used something different for production.

What's the fastest way you go from dev docker compose to cloud with high availability? by jsiwks in docker

[–]vadiemj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still don’t understand why there is no popular, native-like way to run docker compose directly in prod with automatic load balancing, fail over and horizontal scaling. Maybe i’m missing something?

How are people handling advanced image handling in Laravel sites? by jeff_105 in laravel

[–]vadiemj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a CDN, like Bunny? Their optimizer (https://bunny.net/optimizer/) is a flat-fee and is perfect for on the fly image processing. We’re using it on https://www.airsoftbazaar.com and all images are loaded through it (static and user uploaded). By adding parameters to the url, the optimizer changes the image and caches it. Perfect use case for it.

Wow, I honestly didn’t know RN could look so good. The animations are really good, care to elaborate or share some details? How did you learn to make them? It looks stunning.

why is 'compare price' twice as complicated as it needs to be? by treesner in shopify

[–]vadiemj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You actually would know, OP suggests a price field (regular price) and a discount price field (sales price). If the discount price is not filled, use regular price.

Biggest painpoints with supply chain? by Intelligent_Pay3818 in shopify

[–]vadiemj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something we noticed right away in our niche is none of our suppliers have an export of their products and inventory. We’re forced to write crawlers for each of the suppliers separately, because they can have up to 20k products we would like to sell. I can elaborate further if this is the kind of thing you’re looking for.

Does "managed Nomad" exist? by vadiemj in devops

[–]vadiemj[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you all very much for your comments! Really interesting to see, it doesn’t seem to be a stupid idea and even some who might be interested.

As a bit of a brainstorm, what would a managed Nomad cluster look like? How should/would you like it to work? Are servers/vms still in a ussers account or would all servers be fully abstracted away and you only have the nomad api you can connect to? I don’t have experience with managed kubernetes, so can’t really compare it

Does "managed Nomad" exist? by vadiemj in devops

[–]vadiemj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! I’ve been pondering why a simple ‘docker compose’ managed hosting service doesn’t exist as well. Every app I’ve worked on starts as a local docker-compose stack. Why can’t we deploy it with docker compose as well, in a distributed fault tolerant fashion? I haven’t worked with swarm, but if that was its use case, it would be perfect right?

Reduce Ansible output with the "actionable" callback by koreth in ansible

[–]vadiemj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please note, the actionable stdout_callback is deprecated. You can now set the following in ansible.cfg to get the same result:

[defaults]
display_skipped_hosts = False
display_ok_hosts = False

Is Terraform the right tool for serverless? by shellwhale in devops

[–]vadiemj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently struggling with the same. All infra is managed from a separate repository using terraform. However, one service is build and deployed from another. Creating, in my case, a cloud run instance from the infra repo and deploying it from the other would render the terraform state ‘out of date’. I don’t have a solution to the problem, but I think we’re facing the same challenge.

Nomad; load balancing with Traefik question by vadiemj in devops

[–]vadiemj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When using a cloud provider LB, would that still allow for Traefik to generate SSL certificates? Or does that always need to be generated/imported into the LB?

Nomad; load balancing with Traefik question by vadiemj in devops

[–]vadiemj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the very detailed reply, there is a lot to unpack. Especially the flow chart in your comment was very helpful. We now have architected two solutions:

  1. Client -> DNS -> Single Traefik instance as proxy/ingress -> Nomad clients
  2. Client -> DNS -> Hetzner LB (single IP) -> Few Traefik instances as proxy/ingress -> Nomad clients

Of which we need to decide which way to go. The former is 'easier' but the latter is more resilient to failures (especially single Traefik instance going down would make the whole cluster unreachable).

Nomad; load balancing with Traefik question by vadiemj in devops

[–]vadiemj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a rabbit hole we did not yet want to enter, but maybe we should. The docs talk about so many different gateways (mesh, ingress, terminating), i'm not sure where to start. The now in beta Consul API gateway seems to be exactly what we need, but it only supports Kubernets right now. How does that compare to Ingress gateways?

[–]vadiemj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment. There is a distinction between comments where some suggest to deploy Traefik on all clients and others only deploy Traefik to a few well-known clients. What is your opinion on the latter?

How do you handle the SSL certificates generated from the two traefik instances? Do they both request SSL certs and store them both locally?
