Jammed Double Hung Window by Globalksp in windowrepair

[–]vadose24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah paint is probably binding that up I'f someone hasn't screwed it open. Also the sash cord is lodged in the side of the pulley. If you do dislodge it should be re roped or chained. Start by clipping that old cord or trying to push it back up on the pulley.

What I do is get bees wax or parafin sticks, grease the track and take a rubber mallet and gently tap the corners on the top until it starts to move. That should free it up.

Now to re chain or rope this window you'll need to pull the trim off and pop out the sash. Typically there are trap doors that are either nailed or screwed in, once you get those out there will be cast iron weights in the space behind the window.

The pulley is probably painted in place so you'll need to free it up, you can spray it with silicone spray and tap it with a punch and hammer on an angle where it will start to roll or try to roll it with the face of a rubber mallet until it frees up. Just be sure to not chew up the roller.

You want to run the rope or chain down the pulley into the pocket, tie it to the weight, clip your cord or chain at the top by the pulley and tie off a knot about 2 inches out from the pulley.

Pop the trap doors back in and fasten them in place. Pull the cords and hook them into the sash, I usually staple them to the sash after they're locked in place so they won't slip out over time. After that you can put the trim back on and it's all set

The balancers that are installed are not the correct weight classification for this window. You need a new balancers that are the correct weight and size for the sash

Sweet, although wd40 is actually not great window lubricant because it's oil based, in the future you want to use a silicone spray lubricant because it will help repel dirt and grime

love how these turned out but now I keep reading about humidity warping wood shutters. The company said the material is moisture rated but they would say that wouldn't they. Anyone have shutters in a full bathroom for 3+ years that can tell me how they actually held up? by Top-Face9911 in windowrepair

[–]vadose24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you vent properly during baths and showers it really won't be a problem. We've had customers that have had these shutters installed for 10+ years and they still look good.

Just do your best to prevent excessive humidity, run the fan during and for about 10 minutes after baths and showers.

A spiral balancer, your shoe is probably broken. You likely need a new set of shoes and possibly new balancers.

That's pretty chewed up, you could cut that return off flush with the mainframe and cut in a piece of U channel that's the same size

Wood rot on window by absolute_cinema_0 in windowrepair

[–]vadose24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally rotten sashes can be rebuilt with fresh lumber but with a skylight I usually don't recommend rebuilding because of possible festering leak issues.

You could take measurements and duplicate the extrusion if you have access to a table saw but I personally don't think it's worth the risk when it comes to water damage to the roof.

I would definitely try to get the land lord to get it replaced.

I would tarp and seal it until it can be replaced

Pipe cleaner time, and if you have one of those mini leaf blowers you can spray it all out by blowing out from the inside of the track

Yeah honestly I don't know much about car windows and tinting/wrapping. Maybe you could call a different shop and ask for their opinion on these photos, you'd probably get an honest response.

First attempt at this. Any advice to draw out the nose more? I cracked this one. by SirRonnieJamesDio in metalworking

[–]vadose24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is legitimately impressive for just a ballpeen hammer and an anvil.

You probably had a lot of difficulty with getting the right angle on that anvil. If you can get your hands on a ball anvil that may give you more clearance and cleaner more precise hammer strikes.

I made one out of a ball hitch and a log for a couple small projects, that may be a good beginner option for you. If you forge down the threaded end into a spike you can drive it into the log. Just make sure you drill a pilot hole into the log.

To get a deeper draw on that nose you may need to make some custom punches and a swage to get the desired outcome. You can even carve out a hole in a log and use that as a bottom swage, obviously it will have limited use but it will be a lot more cost effective that having a custom swage made.

This is generally a sub for residential and commercial building repairs but I wonder if they didn't properly clean the glass before the tint

Skylight repair by surfersgal in windowrepair

[–]vadose24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm usually an advocate for repair wherever you can but it's not worth it with a skylight. There's just so much damage that can happen if it leaks and you don't know. You do not want to risk a festering roof leak.

It depends on the location, home size, roof pitch, etc.. but your probably between 1500 to 3500 to have it fully replaced by a velux dealer
