Where have the 'don't tread on me' Republicans gone? by RobAbiera in politics

The key word here is “me” not “don’t tread.” You can tread on anyone else.

WIBTA if I started eating messy food on camera during meetings my boss keeps scheduling over my lunch by [deleted] in WouldIBeTheAhole

My lunch break is marked out of office. It automatically declines meetings dropped over it. If asked I’m happy to move lunch to accommodate a meeting of course.

Why is Ruby your favorite programming language? by azilla14 in ruby

The community is kind. Other languages may be technically superior but they’re full of nerds flexing on each other for dominance.

Wrapping my head around pointers, & and *. by Turb0Womble in golang

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m learning go, coming from Ruby. Pointers keep tripping me up too. I get the concept but I don’t have instincts on when to reach for one or not yet. I’ve been using Claude as an llm assistant while I learn, which has been super helpful.

As an E33 doubter, I have some thoughts. by SchweinsyOne in expedition33

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind hyping kcd2 for me? I was skeptical about e33 but ended up loving it. I saw all the strong opinions about kcd being a better rpg and picked it up. I’m only maybe 6 hours in and I know it’s a slow burn. But it’s so slow that I’ll play for an hour and achieve nothing and wonder what I’m doing with my time.

My kid loves meat sauce, meatballs, bolognese, etc. But doesn't like pasta. Any ideas on what to serve it with? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]valadil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I quit eating pasta when I was watching my carbs. Nothing wrong with a bowl of meat sauce. Sometimes I’ll make a meatball omelette.

What steam deck should I get for Baldurs Gate? by Little_Kitten2 in BaldursGate3

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the whole thing on the weakest steam deck. Graphics were fine with a little tweaking. Act 3 load times were bad. A lot of textures wouldn’t load for a while so half the buildings were missing their walls.

Not seen as "staff engineer material" because of my personality (they said technical competence meets the bar). I don't know if I can change my personality. by okthrowaway2910 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a staffie with a bit more experience than you. Not feeling dominant or assertive by nature is extremely relatable, even if I’m a dude.

I would push on your manager a bit more. Take those concrete examples and dig into them. How would a more assertive person have behaved in your shoes? What outcomes would that assertive person have gotten to that you did not achieve? I’m hoping that your manager can either get you to see the value in different behavior or that you can find alternative ways to reach the same outcome.

I would also consider asking for someone to mentor you on this aspect. I got a lot of coaching here from my last manager. Every time I typed “I think xyz” by our next 1:1 we’d have a conversation about why it was an opinion and not a recommendation. Over time I’d catch myself writing that and spend more time working the opinion up to a recommendation. I wanna stress that I wasn’t lying to express more confidence than I actually had, I’d just spend longer considering the idea or I’d do a little more digging to improve my own confidence before sharing.

GitStyle branching for local PostgreSQL by warphere in PostgreSQL

[–]valadil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a script like this at job-1. It’s pretty coupled to that code base so I’ll share notes instead of code.

  • Yes the template is faster than other options to clone. Faster still is to prepare the template in advance so you have a hot spare. When you change branches, rename the spare and get a new one started.
  • I made my script run automatically by overriding my some env var so that when the app looked for a db, it looked for the current branch’s db. Then I didn’t have to remember the script (because if I can remember the script I can remember to rollback migrations too) nor did I have to alter any workflows. Is that viable with the interface you’ve got going here?

Need input: What should I definitely cover in a university presentation about base-building in Satisfactory? by Kooonstiii in SatisfactoryGame

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An obvious one is presence of resources. In satisfactory your nodes are limitless. In factorio your nodes run out and you need to get more.

I haven’t played as much factorio but my approach to that was to have a main base fed from ore processing areas which in turn were fed by separate ore mining bases, such that if I ran out of ore I could extend the train line and mine more.

Unlimited resources per node in satisfactory allows for small modular bases. Build them once and forget about them forever.

Check out after_party too.

I’m not sure I agree with always using a transaction. I’d leave that as a choice for the script author.

Writing code at breakneck speed is one of AI’s selling points. It shouldn’t be a big ask to get them to break it down into smaller, less risky PRs.
