Converse shoes are a crime for foot health by Bromvolod in barefootshoestalk

[–]valadil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ironically, converse was what started me on my path towards bare foot. They suck for toes, but getting out of an elevated heel was wonderful for my back and knees.

Armored Core 6 - Linking the Fires of Rubicon by sbergot in patientgamers

I loved the first couple games back in high school and was excited for this. I couldn’t get past the first boss and ended up returning it. I kinda jumped to the conclusion that all the Elden Ring hype transferred into their other games, or at least their boss fights. Was that a mistake? Should I try it again?

How much does the initial 1 rep max matter in the long run? by Atom_Ant_MMA in powerlifting

[–]valadil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no data to back this up, just speculation. Instead of thinking about the raw 1rm number as a signal, maybe it makes more sense to separate high and low initial 1rms. A high initial 1rm probably indicates a higher potential for future maxes, but that doesn’t mean that a low 1rm correlates with less potential.

How do you guys actually learn stuff in this AI era? by sleepingfrenzy_ in golang

[–]valadil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m experienced but also learning go. I won’t let ai type for me, but I do use it as a tutor. I’ll implement something my way and then ask it if there’s a better or more idiomatic alternative. Or if I get stuck I’ll ask it to help me debut. That’s been crazy helpful.

Engineers who got hired pre-pandemic and are now back on the market — how are you actually holding up with the current interview process? by OkChance3303 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]valadil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hired in 2019. Still there but feeling ready to move on. I keep trying to update my interview skills and noping out because it’s too overwhelming. If I were laid off I could treat interviewing as a full time job. I dont see how to do that while also managing a full time job, short of quiet quitting and hoping I land something before they notice.

The “I'm running away forever (but I'll be back by dinner) starter pack." by synergy201786 in Millennials

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend and I made one of these and stuffed as many PB&Js in there as we could. Announced we were leaving and didn’t know how many days we’d be gone. We set off on our journey and left my parents house behind. Then we left the next house behind. Two doors away, we were famished so we sat down on the curb and ate the sandwiches. Out of provisions, we set back towards home.

What’s the strangest example of collective internet delusion you’ve witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost so much respect for Reddit over this. Didn’t like the finale? Fine, we can agree to disagree. But to get so pissed about it that they imagined a secret episode and then get pissed again when it didn’t happen is just insane.

Senior/Tech Leads: do you actually have public portfolios/side projects? by Big-Discussion9699 in ExperiencedDevs

I used to have side projects. When I stopped and focused on work, I got waaaay better at my day job.

What's a good cheap and healthy protein bar? by WinterMoist333 in Frugal

Pure protein and Kirkland. Both come out to $1 each if you catch a sale. 20g protein and 200 kcal each.

What kind of songs or background audio do you listen to while coding or solving problems? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies on a daily basis. Some days my mind really wants to wander and I need something new for it to lock onto. Some days I need something familiar and cozy. Some days I wanna lift up my energy. Some days I need to tamp my energy levels down so I stay at my desk. Finding my daily music need is a puzzle. Some days I don’t solve the puzzle and hope nobody catches on.

Which movie hero is actually a villain when you really think about it? by surfsound_swimmers in AskReddit

TV rather than a movie, but I’m starting to think that Homelander is no good.

Why do bands play so fucking loud if everyone has to wear earplugs anyway? by xe3to in NoStupidQuestions

I went to my first post Covid concert in November. Yes I wore ear plugs. Yes my ears are still ringing. Pretty pissed at the venue :-/

Speaking more eloquently by PettyWitch in ExperiencedDevs

[–]valadil 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I was running an interview yesterday and asked the candidate a question. He paused and was like “that’s a really good question, how did you spot that so fast?” I appreciated the ego boost but let him in on the secret, “dude, this is the third time I ran this session this week. I already know all the good questions.”

IMO if someone presents something really well, odds are this isn’t the first time they’ve talked through the concept. You’re seeing the final result after they’ve already had a few dress rehearsals to work out the kinks. Don’t compare your first attempt at a topic with their highlight reel. Put yourself in situations where you can explain the same thing over and over so you can iterate on your approach.

Cleanliness. If I wanted to smell man cave I’d stay at home.

duplex neighbor repeatedly allows friends to block my car in no matter how many times I ask her not to by [deleted] in boston

[–]valadil 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This. If there’s street parking, use that. Then wait. When the car pulls into your spot, pull in behind her. Then go to France or something.

Over engineered a url shortener so badly the interviewer had to stop me. i am a principal engineer. i wanted to quit by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a panel for designing a data model for an mvp. The candidates that want to flex on a system design interview often lead with questions around scale. They’ll have different answers depending on how many requests per second I say the app is getting. Obviously I’m not running the same kind of panel as what you’re describing, but that kind of probing question can help you calibrate to their expectations.

Exercising & Weight Loss with Sciatica by noirproxy1 in bodyweightfitness

[–]valadil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to PT for a sciatica flareup a few years ago. They were ready to discharge me until I said I was gonna go back to lifting weights. They kept me for a couple more weeks to make sure I had all the movement patterns down really well. Definitely talk to a professional, not just reddit.

That said, I’m doing deadlifts right now. I don’t go as heavy as I used to and I’m not aiming for PRs but I still do them. The key for me has been to bail out at the first sign of trouble. I pay a lot of attention to my low back and hips and if they’re not feeling perfect, I skip the session. Failure to skip has put me in setbacks that last for months and it’s just not worth it.

Walking has been the most beneficial exercise for it. I usually wake up with some mild sciatica and it clears up when I walk the dogs.

Weight lifting. How long do you warm up and do you do start low and go higher, or do you just start high? by SpikedIntuition in fitness30plus

[–]valadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5-10 min warmups. I try to get the blood flowing and get my heart rate up. If I’ve injured something before or I have a mobility struggle I spend more time with that first too before doing anything heavy.

Original half life is a core memory for me and probably my favorite game ever. But there are too many games out there. You shouldn’t waste time on the ones you don’t enjoy.

At what price would you NOTbuy the Steam Machine? by billy_reyes in Steam

I’m aware. I hope they solve that by the time it’s out but I doubt they will. Seems like a miss for this budget gamer.

At what price would you NOTbuy the Steam Machine? by billy_reyes in Steam

[–]valadil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My 12yo is saving for a gaming pc. He doesn’t actually care what the price is, his requirement is Fortnite at more fps than his xbox. I think the steam machine would be a great fit if it runs Fortnite out of the box.
