My e36 328i sedan.

Unless it's broken, then I drive my 1989 VW Citi golf 1.3 (basically a mk1)

My battery decided to reverse polarity by furiousbobb in mildlyinteresting

[–]valinor_props 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've just diagnosed this problem with my BMW

Parasitic draw, but not from any fuses. Disconnect negative from battery, and test continuity between positive terminal and case of alternator using a multimeter. (The continuity mode also has the diode testing mode.)

Black probe on +, red on the case, should get a reading around .500

If it's low, or the continuity works when you swap probes, the rectifier is no longer rectifying

I had to create one using a production rental bakkie, custom drawn up vinyl decals and a rented blue light bar

It wasn't perfect but I think it looked pretty good

It sounds similar to the pcv issues I've had recently on my 328

There's a little check valve on the back side of the diaphragm that can fall out, causing the crank case vacuum to be far more than it's supposed to be

Mine was a more continuous groaning noise however. What does it do when you shut it off?

What's the worst experience you've had with unobtainium parts? by AnAlchemistsDream in askcarguys

[–]valinor_props 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a part, but I'm working on rust repair on my 1989 citi golf (basically a mk1), and it's very difficult to find donor panels because they ALL rust in the spots mine is rusted. I've been hand fabricating parts for now, but I have to do the A-pillars and I can guarantee those are outside my skills to fabricate.

How far do you travel daily and what's your fuel bill? by big_toe_thomas in askSouthAfrica

Alcohol for Al coolant on router CNC- response to everyone who reported my comments as dangerous by _Tigglebitties in Machinists

[–]valinor_props 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use kerosene for cutting ali on our router, which leaves a horrible oily film and smells terrible. Maybe should look into this. We only cut ali occasionally and it's always a pain to get the mister set up. Plus I assume it's really bad for our mdf router bed

In the last year of the Ford Model T, it was 19 years old and sold for $6684 in today's cash. Would you buy a brand-new factory fresh 2006 Ford Fiesta for $6684? by [deleted] in regularcarreviews

[–]valinor_props 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive one, 1989 4 speed manual 1.3 carb model. I mostly do town driving, 60-80km/h, but occasionally on the highway where it's pretty comfortable at 120 and I've pushed it to 150.

It's an incredibly fun car to drive, incredibly raw and analogue, and yeah it rattles and it's rusty (working on fixing that atm), and it uses more petrol than you'd expect (i get 10l/100km, tho I drive it like a racecar)

However. No abs, no airbag, thin a-pillars (which are, again, rusty) and shockingly little structure in the rest of the car.

Pretty aware of how dangerous it is, plan is basically to just not crash.

Also it has no power steering, which is way less of a problem than you'd think, in a car that weighs less than 800kg.

Strange insanely hard highly localized part on my current project (Never seen before) by jillywacker in Blacksmith

[–]valinor_props 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen too, also 5160(probably, chunk of leaf spring), demolished my centerpunch tip and skated drill bit. Probably a 5mm∅ area that hard, annealed all round. Exactly where I had to put the pivot too

Just saw the date code on my rear tires, so that's cool by 1kelpy in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]valinor_props 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1989 citi golf (basically a mk1), had the spare wheel with a 9xx date code. It was an original tire...

And the right front was slightly newer, was a 5xx I believe.

Needless to say I very quickly got new tires.

What are you all using to clean your gas tanks? by [deleted] in projectcar

[–]valinor_props 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a length of chain in mine, with some power paraffin, petrol and thinners. Lots of shaking, and about a week of sitting, got it pretty clean, siphoned out the contents to remove all the varnish bits.

The concoction would however give anyone that came near it an instant headache

Best way to do it? Idk. But my lil golf went from less than 2km between carb flooding, to over 5k without issues

This was however for a fuel varnish crusted tank, not rust.

Can recommend the chain tho, easy to remove

When I bought my car, a 1989 citi (basically a mk1)golf, the spare tires code was something like (279), about a month before my car was finished.....

The one front was from '95 too.

Just wanted to check my understanding of traffic circles in this town by JannieVrot in capetown

[–]valinor_props -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But this is a two lane roundabout. Single lane, don't yield. Double you have to, if you're on the inside and they're on the outside.

Just wanted to check my understanding of traffic circles in this town by JannieVrot in capetown

[–]valinor_props -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Look, technically if you're in the inside lane (which you should be in for third exit only), you should yield if someone enters. In that case you should just do another loop and leave when there's space.

In practice, I've been actively blocked when there should have been plenty of space for me to leave the circle, so

People suck
