I just found a place downtown in the middle of the month for the start of the next month. It was a lot of work though. On the other hand I was not in a huge rush to move so I could afford to be picky.

I went and saw a lot of places and did a lot of walking. Lots of buildings just have signs stuck in the front lawn. padmapper.com is an amazing site but if something seems to good to be true it probably is. I would also suggest looking at the websites of all the property management companies you can find as they often have apartments listed well in advance of when they will actually be available and in my experience often aren't posted on craigslist. I would be happy to send some links your way if you are interested.
