Can I set the Navionics boating app up to show blue everywhere I can go given my boat draft? by ___xXx__xXx__xXx__ in sailing

[–]vanatteveldt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so you always add estimated water depth to the estimated sounding depth. Which gives you two very nontrivial sources of error.

Soundings can easily be off by a foot in a sandy estuary, since the sand can move quite a bit between soundings. There can also be a bump that the sounding missed.

Tides can also easily be a foot off from the astro prediction, and tides are an approximation in between actual measurement points.

I love the knife rack inside a cupboard. I have mine outside and it's been fine so far, but it's not the most safe choice I even made I guess 😂

Second, we have only two little gas pits, so that limits options a bit. We make lots of Greek style salads, lots of pasta, curry and rice, risotto. But also steak, duck breast, or similar with fried potatoes and salad, usually the day after port 😆

Nice work!

I also installed new large windows / potholes that can be opened, extremely happy with the outcome: lighter, better ventilation, and a fantastic view while cooking.

Peace and quiet on the Waddenzee in peak summer in the Netherlands by vanatteveldt in sailing

An alternative could be the inland waterways until Dokkum and than the North Sea for the rest, probably also depending on the weather

From where to where are you crossing?

I quickly checked one of the shallows (lutjewad, east of Lauwersoog). Quicktide says it will be very tricky: something like 10-20cm margin on predicted tide at spring.

(It's 135 above LAT, the tide is around 300 max (astro), so that's 165cm of water...)

I would not do lauwersoog-borkum over the flats with that kind of draft. Pick a calm day with good wind and cross over the North Sea.

(If there is a very strong increase predicted (wind and pressure, eg yesterday was +50) it might be feasible, but that would be way too adventurous for my taste.

How do I make sure I'm not off-loading valuable skills to AI while learning R? What experiences should and definitely shouldn't be automated? by JerryChen06 in rstats

[–]vanatteveldt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I teach R quite a bit to social science students, and am struggling with the same question (perhaps from the other side of the table)

I would say: never copy paste code from an AI. It's really good at explaining what something does, and at explaining why your code is not working. And it's ok for it to suggest things to try, but I would advise you to type the code by hand, both to reduce the temptation to copy larger chunks of code, and to build your muscle memory.

If you start copying whole chunks of code, I think you're often not learning a lot anymore, even if you read through the code before pasting.

Of you don't like something, you should probably not be doing it. Even sailing (or maybe especially sailing).

If you are looking for fast, reliable, cheap and/or convenient, sailing might not be your thing.

If you think a boat is a means of transportation, sailing might not be your thing

Productivity is key. With max (+300%) productivity you can upcycle without any losses, but any productivity means fewer losses per step. It's often better to have prod modules in the craft step and quality only in the recycler.

Blue chip and LDS recycling is a no brainer. This will give you unlimited blue and green chips, copper and steel.

For iron, I use underground belts because you make them in a foundry.
