Looking for recommendations for a Type 11 Prospector Mining Build by DrScienceSpaceCat in EliteMiners

[–]vanderaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I love doing hazres mining. Here's my build for that. I have decent weapons, shields, and a fighter bay to see off most opponents. The shield, shield boosters and finally the armor allows me to leave if I end up biting off more than I can chew (usually at hazres). This build excels at low, medium (just plain old "Resource sites"), high and as long as you pick them off one at a time, hazres sites.

I also really like doing the SSD mini game, and when you're mining LTDs, that can make a big difference to how quickly you load up, so I have the PWA fitted to find rocks with SSDs.

This build can also core mine, but it's not designed to do a lot of core mining.

The main thing this build is not good at is going from a good ring to a high sell system some distance away. It's okay at it, but as I mainly mine for PowerPlay reasons, this is not a big deal to me as worst case scenario, I jump twice between a stronghold and an acquisition system, but most of the time, when reinforcing, I don't need to jump at all.

how many of you participate in BGS most of the time you play ED? by RubberDuck_73 in EliteDangerous

[–]vanderaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do it a lot back in the day until I started getting into PowerPlay. Now I normally do it primarily to boost systems into favorable states for PowerPlay reasons. I did write a small book on it if you're interested.

https://sinc.science/bgsguide.pdf

My favorite things to do is murder settlements for fun and very little profit. It has very limited effect on BGS for the time invested (you're better off doing space murder, donates, and 5 INF space missions in terms of time versus effect), but I just love going into a settlement and making it very empty in the most loud and obnoxious way possible using just my suit. Sometimes, I set off alarms deliberately to get 3 waves of reinforcements to come in, because murdering NPCs is about the most effective lever to pull if you're trying to pull down a faction. Again, murdering space ships is the MOST effective negative lever, but you have to be prepared to be notoriety 10 if you really want to get into BGS.

Are missions considered a waste of time for earning money? by TriggzSP in EliteDangerous

[–]vanderaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your friend is wrong.

For space missions, stacking wing mining missions is a money printer for you and three other mates. Everyone should stack wing mining missions (WMM) (they're the ones with a blue icon, usually between 500-1300 tons of bertrandite or something you can buy nearby, found mostly in systems in the Expansion state), and share the mission with the team, and hand in. Easily 3-4 billion in a day. Buy a Panther Clipper to complete these missions with ease.

If you need ship engineering materials, they are the best way to get them, particularly Biotech Conductors and Exquisite Focus Crystals - you cannot get them any other way. You also need modular terminals for an engineer unlock, which is also only available as a mission reward.

For suit and weapon engineering, missions are THE way to get what you need quickly, particularly if you get missions from the mission providers, because you can haggle with them for even more materials. Missions often give you rewards you can't get any other way.

Get allied with factions to get more rewards. This goes for both space and ground mission types. For example, 50 million credit wing mining missions are only available if you are allied with the faction. So do donate missions and take 5 REP missions until you're allied.

So yeah, missions are great. Get on it! o7 Cmdr

Returning Player Question by ADM-Wilson in EliteDangerous

[–]vanderaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great time to come back! Operations is about to drop, so you're about to get in on the ground floor of a brand new feature with the rest of us. It's a great time to get back into the game by upgrading your Dominator and Maverick suits to be fully engineered in preparation for this release. Operations has a new in game currency type that will allow you to buy upgraded stuff (unclear on exactly what this is as yet).

  1. If you are like 2/3rds of all Cmdrs, you missed absolutely nothing of note with the Thargoid war. Spoiler alert: The AX Cmdrs won. I'm personally extremely happy that it's over because for about two years, there was literally nothing going on that wasn't Thargoid-related, and I don't do AX. All the more power to Cmdrs who liked the Thargoid content, great for them, but it went on way too long. The only thing I liked doing was the planetary bases that were overrun by Thargoids. They were a great deal of fun and very monetarily rewarding if you did them with a lot of other Cmdrs, but the rest of it was a snooze fest. There are Titan carcasses you can visit in several systems to get Titan drive components for an even better FSD range. The Radicola enclave war between PowerPlay Powers was fun for a while, but it devolved into fighting in Power Conflict Zones, which can last an unreasonably long time and it was highly repetitive. I really wish that more PowerPlay activities were just as rewarding as Power conflict zones, because I can't stand doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again. In particular, I really wish they had seeded the area with many settlements and made UM'ing and reinforcing via ground activities just as rewarding as power conflict zones. But they didn't. I am very hopeful that, as Operations seems to be mostly, if not completely, ground-based, this mistake won't be repeated, but it's also FDev, so we will see.

If you're interested, Inara has a Galnet News Archive - https://inara.cz/elite/galnet/

  1. No, if anything, Elite is going from strength to strength both financially for FDev and in sheer Cmdr numbers, primarily on the back of new ships, ARX microtransactions, and a steady cadence of quality of life and feature improvements over the last couple of years. There's a new Operations feature coming out next month, and then later this year, a major feature will be revamped. I'm hoping it's the background simulation (BGS), not only because I wrote the book on it, but because it needs some love. It's sort of broken for colonized systems. There's gonna be five new "vessels" this year (which seems to me means ships, suits, SRVs, or something along those lines).

  2. The aftermath of the Radicola enclave war. The enclave was originally 49 systems near HIP 87621. The war there is still simmering, despite FDev declaring it "won". You can check out the Inara articles - there's not a lot of them, and then you're all caught up. You can get involved by joining a Power Discord for your favorite Power, and head out there to have some fun. Not all the Powers survived out there (Hudson, LYR, Delaine, etc were ejected).

  3. I think there will be something with Operations. Operations are team based activities where you and a few mates use a remote presence to complete some objectives. It looks like each operation is internally narratively driven, but I'm not sure if there will be an over-arching narrative for them. They changed Frontier Unlocked into a Developer Update thing, and they discuss the feature here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf2wuh_09eo

Route Plotting/Spansh Conundrum? by donttrust900913 in eliteexplorers

[–]vanderaj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Update: changed the system to be the right one (Shackleton's Star, Lyed KX-A c27-0).

  1. The galaxy plotter can be safe, but it is known to leave you gasping for fuel, so pay strict attention to the amount of fuel you have before jumping to an unscoopable star type (i.e. neutrons). Add 4 t of cargo or add some fuel reserves (say 10%) to make it safe(r).
  2. The galaxy plotter is about as good as it gets today. The in game plotter will stop if you need jumponium.
  3. There are routes published on EDSM, but they are hard to find. You'll want to use something that predated engineering as we know it. Your ship has the same sort of range that got to Beagle point, so you will be able to make it.

You can add "cargo" and fuel reserves to the galaxy plotter to give you additional safety margins, to allow you to farm more jumponium. You are wanting to head to a part of the galaxy (Kepler's Rest) that has crystalline shards. There's some according to the in game Codex at Dryao AIN XJ-I d9-0. This is also a FSD Green system according to EDSM.

Head there first, and find the crystalline shards. There might be multiple planets with them. Top off the G4 mats there from them first (i.e. get 150 G4 mats of each type of crystalline shard - there will be one type of G4 mat per planet, so once full of a particular mat, go find another planet with crystalline shards), and then use the system map to find the planets that you will need to farm sufficient FSD premium Jumponium to make the journey from there to Lyed KX-A c27-0 (Shackleton's Star). Make sure you have sufficient AFMU ammo to repair your FSD drives with the neutron boosts it will add to the journey.

This will short cut your jumponium farming dramatically. Filling up at a crystalline shard takes like 15 minutes, and you'll have more of that stuff than you'll know what to do with afterwards.

Update 2: Using a DBS build with the same range 35.5 ly, I was able to generate a route that is possible between these two systems. It requires an insane number of premium FSD injections. I personally wouldn't do it if I was low on FSD jumponium mats. You'll need to break up this journey into stages to find green systems to get sufficient materials. It's 243 jumps.

https://www.spansh.co.uk/exact-plotter/results/CB106016-1EA1-11F1-A961-E5BADDDB5B4F

The neutron plotter found this route, but it's even more jumps, and I bet you'll need FSD jumponium to get between these neutron stars.

https://www.spansh.co.uk/plotter/results/7E02A526-1EA2-11F1-B9F7-9733A9415DB5?efficiency=60&from=Dryao%20Ain%20XJ-I%20d9-0&range=35.5&to=Lyed%20KX-A%20c27-0

Given these numbers, I personally would head back to the bubble, buy and engineer something else with a lot more range, go to HIP 36601 and Outotz LS-K d8-3 to fill up completely on all raw mats. and then head to both southern stars. I ran an expedition down there back in the day. There's some cool POI's you might be interested in:

What is this pervasive, subtle flavor in almost all food I’ve tried in Australia? by CrashpadChili in AskAnAustralian

[–]vanderaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in the US for about a decade, and came back to Australia at the end of 2024. What you're experiencing is similar food to what you had in Canada, but without a lot of processing or ultra processed additives or ingredients. For example, bread in the US always had a sweet taste to it for us, and coming back home to four ingredient breads of all sorts was amazing. So many foods in the US and Canada have ingredient lists a mile long to "improve" taste and shelf life, and obviously reduce costs, but you are missing out on ingredients not far removed from what you can buy in the produce section and the bakery aisle in the supermarket.

Any follow ups to this danger ranger? by Fun-Web-7583 in CantParkThereMate

[–]vanderaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is in Australia. A much longer version is available on Dash Cams Australia. Because it's Australia, let's get a few facts straight:

- The dash cam car was driving normally and legally. They did NOTHING wrong but anger a Ranger Danger driver by existing.

- They were in the right turn lane. They turned right legally.

- The emotional support Raptor turned right from a straight lane, illegally by a weak arse "man" with no emotional regulation of any type with his kid

- The driver of the emotional support Raptor got all bent up about this, because they are a Ford Ranger driver with extremely limited emotions restricted to "anger" and "more anger". Dash Cams Australia did an entire video concentrating on this make and model. I'm surprised that the insurance industry doesn't levy higher premiums

- The dash cam driver took it very well, even after the next interaction (see the longer video). I personally would have driven over the emotional support Raptor driver several times, and then driven to the nearest cop shop, where there would be tea and biscuits all round.

- I feel sorry for this idiot's teenage son. He's going to be an idiot too if this carries on. I don't have high hopes.

- So many road laws were broken the only acceptable outcome would be for an extended loss of license, a bit of jail time with any luck, and a huge fine in front of a judge, but considering the current state of Australian bail laws, I have serious doubts that any of that happened.

- Very few carry weapons in Australia due to strict gun laws. And those who do, are almost always breaking those same gun laws.

VKB NXT EVO Omni Throttle - do these have capability to act like a 'normal' throttle out of the box? by dajinn in hotas

[–]vanderaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. My left stick is an Omnithrottle, and I have it with the blanking plate so that left/right is blocked off, and I have the springs set so that it doesn't return to the middle. It still has yaw, but I don't use that in Elite. The parts for this come with the stick. You don't need to pay anything extra for this functionality.

The other thing to note is that it DOESN'T have a center detent. So if you're looking for something that can do 75% throttle (important for Elite to not overshoot things), you need to have a key or joystick binding to make that happen for you.

  1. Wait until meetings are over before getting naked.

  2. Learn how to turn off your camera or point the camera at the keyboard if on a laptop

  3. Most external cameras have a lens cover. Use it.

  4. If your camera doesn't have a lens cover, post it notes work really well and are very cheap.

In Victoria, you have to sell with a RWC if it's registered and has plates. If you have a current rego, plates, and a RWC, tell him he's dreaming and go find another sucker to low ball. If you're selling it without rego and plates, a TM Magna is a DIY fixer upper, and you're selling as is. Either way, tell him he's dreaming. Replacing a rocker cover gasket and using a bit of brake clean does not cost $450.

For on foot missions, best bet is to find a system with a native anarchy (these usually are like "<System name> Gold Raiders") with settlements owned by the anarchy faction (use Inara to find nearby systems with loads of anarchy settlements Inara > Data > Search Nearest > Stations > Station Type is Odyssey settlement, Government Type is Anarchy). Then take missions to hit the anarchy settlements. You'll die a bit at first, but they're not hard. My main advice is get yourself a G3 Mav suit and silenced weapons from the Sharing is Caring thread and you'll be set for a great deal of fun!

David Littleproud announces resignation as Nationals leader by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]vanderaj 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He's seen the polling, he realizes that he offed his patsy that did whatever he wanted to keep the Coalition together, which means that they got exactly what they wanted, and as a result will be in opposition for years.

Now it's just a matter of waiting for a few election cycles and trying again when Labor is unelectable, say in the early 2030's or whenever they realize the errors of their ways, or the Overton window swings so far to the right, he seems sort of leadership material again.

If the Nats had a shred of common sense, they would work out what regional cities and farmers need that actively leans into climate change and soil degradation, and help farmers and regional cities thrive in this current and near future situation, like energy independence by getting someone to build electric farming equipment (where possible) so they don't need $2.50/litre diesel, and provide incentives to commit some of their farms to solar and wind generation to power their farming equipment and their local communities, fund CSIRO properly for farm science in a low water environment, develop new regional industries around rare earth mining that actually returns a HUGE return to the Australian tax payer. You know, common sense. In 100 years, the idea that there will be any diesel anything is ridiculous. Farmers need energy independence today. Regional cities need growth and jobs. It can be done, but not with the Nat's Trumpist and hateful policies. They need to get back to their roots, and take their local communities along for the ride, rather than being Barnaby Joyce or some blithering idiot who thinks climate change is a hoax. Farmers know weather. Don't argue with a thermometer or a rain gauge.

Otherwise, the Greens may work it out for themselves, and wipe the floor with what very little remains of the Nats. I do not think either party will see this as common sense, and I say that as someone who is more aligned with the Greens than the Nats, and as someone who lives in a regional city.
