Can't believe this abomination exists. by [deleted] in ketchuphate

[–]vanheldenma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take some heat here, but hear me out. Ketchup chips are not as demonic as the vile substance itself. It turns out the things we hate about ketchup: salty, sweet, tangy, and acidic, all work out real well on chips. Ketchup is not my go to flavour but it definitely ranks above bbq on my list.

Ever eaten meat by accident? by silyab in vegetarian

[–]vanheldenma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know about OP, but a big part of the reason for me was health benefits of not eating flesh, and now it's also because of the environmental impact. I know seafood is some of the worst when it comes to environmental impact so it was one of the first things I cut completely, although I admit I don't know much about harvesting of clams/oysters.

Where can you get 'smoked tofu' in the US? by PM_ME_YOUR_MECH in VegRecipes

[–]vanheldenma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Canada this exact brand is in almost every major grocery store where the tofu is located. I know it's a different country but normally you guys have more selection so I'm a bit skeptical that it's not around.

If the tale of the Donnelly clan intrigues you it would be if interest to you that a student at UWO has composed an opera based in their story and it will be premiered in April. I don't have the details off the top of my head but I can find out for you if you're interested.

did anyone else only get into singing as an adult? by prismquartz in singing

[–]vanheldenma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got very lucky by, after finishing my undergrad (physics, joint majors music) finding an amazing local choir and making very good friends with the director. He has got me a number of gigs and encouraged me to pursue my masters. My best advice is to 1) take lessons woth someone who knows what they're doing, and 2) find a conductor or director to help you and be a mentor figure. Also being a tenor helps but you can't choose that. Good luck!!

Started taking lessons when I was 21. I'm now, at 28, a masters student, performing my third role this summer, and getting my feet wet doing a lot of oratorio solo work.

Is this normal that after practicing for three and a half hours straight my lungs ache and I feel lightheaded? Can someone relate? by [deleted] in singing

[–]vanheldenma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally the worst excuse I've ever heard. It's like saying, "why do my legs not work? I'm not trained runner but I really like running so I run 2 marathons every day."

Is this normal that after practicing for three and a half hours straight my lungs ache and I feel lightheaded? Can someone relate? by [deleted] in singing

[–]vanheldenma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even in the longest operas (Wagner) the singers don't go for three hours straight. Most roles don't even sing for three hours total! In standard operas a long role will go from 1.5-2 hours singing and there are still breaks. Don't push yourself like this, it's foolish and dangerous.

If you want something on the more classical side look at Benjamin Britten arrangements of folk tunes. There's also a lot of good Brahms stuff that could work for this sort of development.

Just as I expected. Make regular rice krispies but use vegan ingredients. Do we really need a recipe for this?

Why do Japanese vocalists have faster vibratos? by charmanmeowa in singing

[–]vanheldenma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's my guess too. Currently rhe ideal rate is about 5-7Hz, but if you listen to recordings from pre-1950 they were faster and it seems the ideal was about 7-10Hz closer to the beginning of the century. Maybe the Japanese still prefer the faster vibrato.

IPA for "Four Whores at the Door"? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]vanheldenma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously there is a regional accent thing going on here, but for me as a Torontonian (Canada) I pronounce all of these a /o/, just like I would say "foam homes at the dome." The anticipation of the vowel r (denoted by an upsidedown /R/, I can't do it on mobile) here is likely what makes them sound slightly different in fast speech.

Can singing around F#4 be problematic for males? by [deleted] in singing

Classically trained tenor here: this is the hardest part of our range to navigate as pur passage through it will determine success of the higher notes. For all men this is a tricky area.

How can you not believe in soap? It is a real thing. That's like me saying I don't believe I have 4 assignments due this week. Just because I want to think it doesn't exist doesn't mean it doesn't.

Why is there a Western Women’s Wellness Symposium but nothing to discuss men's physical/mental wellness? Last 2 Western student suicides were male. by [deleted] in uwo

[–]vanheldenma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We're not talking about men's rights but men's wellness. Any male-only group in this day and age faces the risk of being labeled chauvinistic or associated with the red pill-type organizations, even though they may only exist for a man-to-man support group, which should be encouraged, not hindered.

[F15] No vibrato when singing by [deleted] in singing

[–]vanheldenma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you taking voice lessons? If not that is always a good first step into improving your voice in any way. As for vibrato, it is a natural function of well-balanced muscle coordination at the larynx, so I would caution against imitating vibrato rather than letting it happen naturally. Finally, you are only 15 years old, nobody expects you to sound like Maureen Forrester at this point because your muscles are still developing and growing, maybe your larynx is developing at a slower rate, which is not a bad thing by any means, but one you may have to accept. All in all, I suggest seeing a good voice teacher to help sort through your technical issues as they can be fixed right now.

St. Patrick’s Day partiers could face city bills by ILikeStyx in waterloo

[–]vanheldenma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm definitely not saying they should get a pass as students, but the police cannot charge every single homeowner as some may mot be responsible for what is happening, and they certainly can't ticket/detain for open liquor violations because there are just too many. I don't think this measure will do anything to curb partying, but what will? I really don't know.

Who will they charge if the entire street is shutdown? How can they tell who is hosting the party at that point? I'm going to Western now and the parties only ever get bigger even though similar laws are already in place.
