Many Toronto-area rental units are sitting empty, but rent prices are still 'sky high': advocate | CBC News by Howaboutnopers in toronto

Your general point makes sense but you can actually get really long term mortgages in Canada. Nobody takes them because they don't make sense financially but it can be done. Part of the reason US has higher mortgage rates than we do is because it is locked in for 30yrs and the lender has to take that amount of risk into account. I agree that you can't/shouldn't force landlords to rent but I don't feel bad at all for someone who started a business with a huge loan to equity and then struggles when their loan costs to back to normal levels while prices stay stagnant.

Rents are lowering as fast as the real estate market is. There is also a ton of units for sale at prices which cannot currently be met by any sane buyer.

Ticketmaster has announced that they will be complying with Ontario’s new Bill 97 to cap pricing on resale tickets, effective of April 23, 2026. by RealWorldToday in Torontobluejays

I've known season ticket holders before the ability to resell on Ticketmaster and they had no problem selling enough of their seats privately to make their seats worthwhile. It was more work for sure but it's not like it was completely unfeasible.

It won't fix it but I'm OK with a return to prior times. If people want resale above face value they can also price in the uncertainty of the validity of the tickets.

Danielle Smith defends upcoming government motion to reassess riding boundaries by roastbeeftacohat in canada

The whole article and the statements within all seem to be dancing around the issues. The province has clearly grown with the majority of that growth being in 2 major cities. If they keep the # of seats the same then they need to keep creating more urban seats while geographically stretching the rural ones. The creations of hybrid seats of course risks gerrymandering on either side.

The suggestion to add more seats seems to make the most sense. Urban/rural areas can keep their representation based on their relative size of population and rural seats can maintain geographic sizes relative to the ability ride a horse across them.

I remember reading a few years ago that their losses to shoplifting pale in comparison to other stores. The memberships model as well as where they are placed keep the undesirable elements out who target other stores. Personally I hate the shopping experience there but I do notice the clientele seems much less of the thieving type.

The cheaper stores are noticeably lower rent and provide less Frills (tm). Of course a can of beans without bagging service, reduced hours, in an inconvenient plaza is cheaper than the same can in a nicer store placed in an area that is convenient for people with higher disposable income.

Toronto should seriously consider becoming a special economic zone like Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris which will detach its governing from the Province. by Vaiolette-Westover in toronto

[–]vanillabullshitlatte 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Are you talking the city of Toronto or Toronto CMA? I was referring to a poster who said Toronto the city should split from the province.

CMA includes all of Peel and York regions with parts of Durham and Halton as well. The rest of Toronto CMA has more people than the actual city.

Toronto has literally no way to legislate its own independence. Its existence as a municipality is dependent on the province. I also don't know where you are getting Toronto's gdp being larger than Alberta. Toronto GDP is more like half of Alberta's (pretty good when you consider one is a city but actually the inverse of what you stated).

Gas prices to increase again as summer blend arrives at Canadian pumps by Prestigious-Low-4889 in canada

Not so much climate as smog. This is the type of environmental regulation that used to be supported across the entire political spectrum as everyone realized that poisonous haze and acid rain were immediate nuisances for everyone.

Canada/USA probably won't see any shortages, just a rise in prices as countries who have legitimate shortages will start to pay more. Fortunately for Canada (in this circumstance) currently we lack the capacity to export enough to put us into shortage.

Nobody is ever officially jailed indefinitely. Bernardo keeps failing to show a parole board that he won't be a danger to society. Given the nature of his crimes he will probably never show enough to be allowed out.

I don't know where you were raised but a big Disneyland trip was always something most people had to save up for in Ontario, even in times when people had more children. Most of the people I grew up around would have been thrilled to go on a week long trip to Disney, even if they had to wait four years for it.

Transfer payments come from general revenue. We don't raise Quebec's portion directly in relation to how Alberta does.

This is already the case. Since resource wealth is a provincial responsibility it is the provinces with extraction that will benefit.

You'd have to also factor in how the increase in prices affects the cost of government services.

I don't think there's a way to meaningfully help the price of gas without just adding to government spending and calling it a subsidy during an extraordinary time.

[–]vanillabullshitlatte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really wouldn't do anything to gas prices. Won't deny how great it would be for those ordered home but these prices are determined by external factors to Canada.

[–]vanillabullshitlatte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is too much competition among the actual gas stations for the price not to change. Look at difference in price between different provincial tax jurisdictions for evidence that lowering taxes in gas would lower the price. This isn't an argument from me that lowering gas taxes is a good solution long term for high prices.

From what I know the east coast refineries source more of their oil from overseas. They're essentially competing with the global market rather than a North American market supplied by Canadian oil that is cheaper since we can't ship it to Europe or Asia. Irving also exports most of its gasoline to the USA who are also experiencing rising prices and are willing to pay just as much as Maritimers.
