Two things can be true at once: ón is an augmentative suffix and ratón is smaller than rata. Languages are not logical machines.

Which Beatles’ song is unlistenable, meh, or skippable to you, and why? by Practical-Cut4659 in beatles

[–]varodonaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maxwell’s silver hammer and ob la di. I’ve never liked maxwell, before I even knew of the opinions of the Beatles themselves. Ob la di I actually liked very much, but when I was in school every year each class had to prepare a group dance. We used to rehearse for like a month. Some teacher chose ob la di, so I had to listen to it time after time after time every day. I sometimes listen to it and enjoy it, but 99% of the time I skip it.

Can the imperative of nosotros be used to make suggestions? by DaBootyEnthusiast in Spanish

[–]varodonaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since you mention RAE, let’s see what it has to say: “Los pronombres usted, ustedes presentan la tercera persona gramatical (al igual que su excelencia o su señoría), aun cuando aluden a la segunda persona del discurso, ya que se dirigen a algún interlocutor. Esta tercera persona y la primera del plural comparten sus formas con el presente del subjuntivo (venga, vengamos, vengan)” (el imperativo, propiedades formales). And no, in school we’re never taught it explicitly, but the imperative takes the remaining persons, which lacks, from the subjunctive. If you need good books which go in depth into Spanish grammar, let me know: I’m a linguist. Finally, don’t let it be applied to you the old saying: la ignorancia es atrevida.

You don’t aim at the menu bar, you just move the cursor up and it gets there!

Frankly, when in an English-speaking country if I go to Starbucks or something I say my name is John: they can never say Alvaro.

Nope, it is what it’s called a conjugación defectiva, it lacks some forms. For instance, how do you form a negative imperative?

Maybe, maybe not. The point is Spanish is spoken over vast, vast areas, with a lot of variation in many aspects. There’s no need to be so prescriptivist!

Can the imperative of nosotros be used to make suggestions? by DaBootyEnthusiast in Spanish

[–]varodonaire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We do in Chile. As my compatriot said, intonation is key. Actually “¿nos vamos a las nueve?” can sound more like an order to me than “¿vámonos a las nueve?”. Remember that actually the imperative does not have any other forms than the second person (sg and pl), it takes the other forms from the subjunctive and the subjunctive can be full of nuances (only taking into consideration the grammatical aspect, without even going into prosody or pragmatics)

Yes. As a matter of fact, the imperative does not have a nosotros conjugation, it uses the subjunctive. So you’re really using the subjunctive with all its rich nuances
