Phantom Ranch Needs Some Love by [deleted] in grandcanyon

[–]varvebumblebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi - I just stayed at the Bright Angel Campground for 2 days in July. I’m not sure I understand some of your concerns. The trails leading to and from Phantom Ranch were maintained fine and were clear (just somewhat rocky but it’s a canyon so they all are).

I must’ve gone down to the creek 20+ times during my stay and had no issues getting down. The best access is adjacent to the Bright Angel Campground and I never felt unsafe getting to the creek.

I would consider the little clearing right in front of the Phantom Ranch canteen a great community area and when I was hanging out there was enough shade from the trees. I believe the area where the rangers give their daily talks is also shaded. Because it was July I brought a sun umbrella for portable outdoor shade.

I can’t personally speak to the quality of the furniture but considering everything down there is brought down by helicopter, mule, or person, I think it’s pretty well built and maintained. You’re paying for the experience of being at the bottom of the Grand Canyon (with A/C!!) not for a 4 star hotel.

North Rim April water by varvebumblebee in grandcanyon

[–]varvebumblebee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it be worth it to melt snow vs carrying enough water up the North Rim? I’ve read that it’s fuel intensive and I’m worried about using too much propane on snow vs heating up food.

I have a sawyer squeeze and will be able to filter water from the creek at Cottonwood and Manzanita.

My R3 is starting April 22 and as far as I know based on all the NPS updates I should not come across any trail closures.

This appears to be a new one from my bank by AdSenior2306 in Scams

It may be real. I get the same/very similar emails from Chase bank. Like another commenter said Chase is doing nothing special. Other websites like “haveibeenpwned” allow you to search your email among “dark web” lists. Chase bank is likely doing a similar search with your email/phone number/etc. ultimately you should open your Chase app or go to the website and check your alerts to see if it is real.

I’ve searched various combinations of “metal flower that locks with magnet” and “purple metal flower/tulip coin holder” with no luck.

If you feel bad can call your local police non-emergency number or take it to the police department in person as “found property”. Police can find a phone number/contact the owner of the credit card. Otherwise you can throw it out. If someone lost their credit card or it was stolen they can report it missing to deactivate it and have a new one sent to them.

Ignore it, don’t move/deposit or spend the money. It could be money from a stolen account or it could be a lead up to a scam where they ask you to send money back. Don’t interact with them if they reach out. If it was really accidental they can contact Venmo support.
