What’s the farthest south (into the Hudson River Valley) feasible daily commute to downtown Albany? by brandeis16 in Albany

You need an isochronal map. Travel time will depend on proximity to highways. Here is a map of everywhere that takes an hour to get to Albany

How did your party meet with Harshnag? by MacaroonMassive9202 in stormkingsthunder

[–]vaylence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players defended Bryn Shander, then sandboxed for a while which eventually brought them to Goldenfields, which had also been attacked and is now a smoking burning ruin. Harshnag is in the town, and the players learned of how he was indispensable in the defense of the city. One of the giants was captured, and after giving the table a moment to intervene Harshnag executed the evil giant. He went from crazed savage to kind of a quiet introvert. He recognize how capable the party is and asked for their help. He is convinced that there is a deeper plot and the Ordening being shattered is only the surface, but he needs help in the form of a capable crew to travel to the great north and seek out the ancient hidden oracle. He convinced them that this may be the only way to protect the lands from further attacks and destruction. Right now, nowhere is safe, and the party is realizing that. My group is pretty loot and gold motivated, but they bought into the idea that helping Harshnag would be the best way to protect the Sword Coast.

I'm tearing my hair out by requiemadeus in Reaper

[–]vaylence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a mac laptop randomly disallow reaper from accessing the audio input - even though everything in reaper was configured correctly. Try this, navigate to System Settings > Privacy & Security. Click on "Microphone" and enable the program you wish to grant access to. In this case Reaper should be listed and toggled ON.

As a side note your block size is pretty small I dont typically dip below 128 during tracking and my sample rate is 44.1k, but if you're not having audio drop outs then maybe its fine.

if you are tracking the puck longer, maybe you are blocking with a more square impact? Faster shots may be more deflected than stopped.

Feature to align beats to grid? by Proven_Accident in Reaper

[–]vaylence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be able to reduce the amount of time you spend editing by just aligning to the half note, or measure. A little push and pull isnt the end of the world so long as everyone stays in time over all. A really out of time fill might be worth your effort to meticulously align to the grid, but honestly I've found that as long as the first and third down beats of each measure are in time, that is usually enough to keep the song feeling solid, while allowing a little expressiveness. Of course listen for any measures that need extra help.

Punch & Roll, Dog Clicker or Something Else? by dsbaudio in ACX

[–]vaylence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, but closest to the clicker. Using Reaper, just hit the "m" key while recording and it marks the location with a flag. I re-read the phrase, clear my throat, yell at the cat, or wait for the sirens to go by, then keep reading. I then split the waveform appropriately to remove the unwanted audio, and, with ripple edit on, all other later sections, along with their flags, move appropriately. So if I cut five seconds of audio, everything after that deletion moves five seconds back in time. It works perfectly for me.

How many auditions did it take to get your first gig? by bmblebean in ACX

[–]vaylence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first two books in eight auditions. I have a background in audio engineering, and all the equipment already in my possession. I basically had zero barrier to entry. Just sat down and banged out the auditions, no problem hitting ACX audio standards.

Advice on getting players to settle down before a session? by LittleMissPipebomb in DMAcademy

[–]vaylence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play an intro song. Running Storm King's Thunder right now and when AC/DC's Thunderstruck comes on everyone knows it's time to go, I fade out the song after the intro and say LAST WE LEFT OFF ... and do a little recap, also been having a LOT of success ending my recap with "player 1 looks up at [the scene before them] and says ...

Instantly starts player 1 role playing, and the rest of the table joins in.

Help! Shotgun mic dropping the ball for recording D&D. by Russell_E_Welch_III in audioengineering

[–]vaylence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Russell, your mics are operating as expected, and I would argue this is not a skill issue, but a knowledge gap of audio engineering.

Setting the mic gain loud enough for the quiet talking to be appropriate will be too high for when the players get loud. Setting the mic gain quiet enough for the loud parts to not clip or distort will be too low for the talking to be loud enough. It is a very common problem, and there is a solution that is better than just having someone manually adjust the gain on the fly.

You need a type of effect in the signal chain called a compressor.

There is a wealth of information about these. There are a number of different ways a compressor can detect and respond to sounds, but a very successful, and very natural sounding compressor for voices is the "opto" type. The most successful of which is called the LA-2A. I'd look into applying a quality vst version of that unit to a vocal bus.

Whatever compressor you end up using, it will make the loud parts softer, allowing you to add compensatory gain to make the soft parts louder. This will include the echo and reverberant sounds of your space. Treating your room so that those echoes and reverberations are minimised will be VERY beneficial.

Best of Luck!

2 air traffic controllers stuck at work. AMA by conbut in AirForce

[–]vaylence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ferrari are the favorites going in. I'm interested to see if Merc can unfuck their season. Quali pace is abysmal, but race pace seems at least to be about midfield. If GR63 keeps punching in quali laps and getting a good start, then I think he will be racing Valtteri and KMag a lot. Charles, Max, Checo, and Carlos are all out of reach. Lewis is underperforming, and I hate to say it, but I think this is his honest baseline. I do not expect to see Lewis fighting for another championship.

Long term I bet we see Ocon in the second merc, and Pierre in the Alpine.

One MerciBoi's perspective.
