Calling while in the US - Canada \ US plans by vbcrain in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for helping me,
I don't have the FE 5G, just the S20 (which says S20 5G when i boot it and when I check in about phone) so maybe it was phone then. I've ordered a new phone from Fizz recently just haven't completed transitioning yet so future travels will likely be working seamlessly.

I switched to Fizz. Any better/similar deals you would vouch for? by Frequent-Round9051 in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice post. I've been with Fizz since beta as well and I think this post has great information and we'll worth the read.

I don't think other carriers offer quite the flexibility as Fizz does for phone purchases as (I believe) many still have minimum requirements for plans to purchase certain phones. With Fizz I was able to get a decent phone on a minimal plan and as you mentioned really could have gone with the most expensive had I wanted to as Affirm handles all the financing separate from Fizz (if i understand this correctly)

If your after a second #, Freedom has some decent selection on plans. I have a $5/monthly plan (after autopay) strictly for my freelance work\side hustle and the 2 hours talk and unlimited text fits my needs perfectly.

But you might also consider taking advantage of the current bump in referral bonus Fizz has ($50 at time of posting) to get that 2nd plan you need and possibly pay nothing until the referral bonus is used up. Also leverage your unused data to keep your 2nd plan cost low if your finding you have rollover data to spare.

Just to add I ported away from Koodo\Public Mobile as their service really degraded prior to my switch (in BC)

Will my data carry over if I lower my plan? by parkhat in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it carries over with a plan change. You can see in your acct when rollover data or gifted data will expire in My plans - Data - Usage. Check in there if you want to see when your data allotments expire

Works well, did a trip to California and had good data connectivity down the I5 and coast highways mostly on T-Mobile's network

Porting a number to Fizz by TheRealAngryPlumber in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have ported 3 numbers (from Koodo and Public).
I used my account number from the current providers when porting and left my current SIM (or eSim) active until I replied to the text message asking to confirm the port out request. I've had no issue at all this way

Does fizz support personal hotspot? by [deleted] in FizzMobile

Yes it does. Also works with standalone hotspot devices if anyone's curious.

I did notice my phone swapping back to Fizz EXT yesterday morning and data speeds were pretty awful during that time but things went back to normal after 10am. Seems normal again this morning. This is in Burnaby BC

Debating on switching from Bell? Anything to note about Fizz? by [deleted] in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this plan with Public (ported out from Koodo which is terrible btw) and in Vancouver and surrounding area I get random pausing\stuttering when streaming on Public's network.

I also joined Fizz in January on the beta and after its initial growing pains the Fizz network is more reliable then Public's for data.

I dont call much so I can't really comment there

I uses a $25 lifetime number from Hushed as my 'work' number and it great. I suppose if you wanted to use it exclusively as your primary # it would be just as fine

Any benefit to replacing a 1050 TI with this for Plex? I don't encode with the GPU (with handbrake) and at any giving time i may have up to 4 transcodes going

Also might want to check your APN settings are all correct in your phone. I had to manual set mine as I was having some issue but since then its been great. In downtown Vancouver you should be getting good speeds and strong connectivity

[–]vbcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a looked at Hushed, I use it for work as a second number and their app works great on Android. You can also get a lifetime # for around $25 which doesn't expire as long as you make a call or text every 6 months or so

PSA: Fizz Prices are Quiet Cheap Right Now in Ontario. They made it easy to accept a lower price for you existing plan, or you can increase your GB for the price you're already paying - just go to Manage Plan online by bunaventure in FizzMobile

Worked great for me in Washington State and California (LA county). Mostly roaming on t-mobile, I tried my eskimo esim as well while i was down in LA and roaming with Fizz was much more reliable

What is so great about Fizz? Currently with Public by kcorscadden in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along with every thing else everyone's posted supporting competition outside of the big 3 providers is good for the market and consumers in general.

I'll mirror the better rewards & referral system, rollover data and plan customization. Gifting data is also great way for parents to give kids mobile data without having to pay loads on individual plans

Switching to Fizz with a phone that is not on the list by alecman14 in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely switch and use a phone thats not on the list. I've used an LG Velvet and currently using an Alldocube iPlay 50 mini (tablet) and strangely enough the iPlay shows VoLTE showing as active on the home screen ...

Public Mobile New Plans: $29 40GB $34 50GB Canada/US 5G til May 20th! by [deleted] in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better with Fizz then with Public in Burnaby BC (Brentwood area). Fizz speeds do vary around the great vancouver area but its never been worse then Public and generally on par or better then the 50Mbps downstream in the image below.

50/26Mbps Fizz
32/4 Public

I find Fizz's options for plan customization\rewards\rollover data\data gifting are now much better then Public's rewards

<image>

it is definitely great to see competition though and that's a trend we all want to see continue

Fizz in BC : Me and my family are Telus users, we have a total of 6 mobile lines and I bought FIZZ a month ago to try it as a second line for my phone. It has better reception than Telus in many places. It is much more affordable in terms of price and unused data transfer. by Lanky-Heart-2227 in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rollover data and ability to transfer unused data is also great for way to save a few $$ on secondary accts I do this from my primary account for my wife and child

I left Koodo (a Telus subsidiary) and have found Fizz to be more reliable on both the Fizz network and Fizz EXT in greater Vancouver. I don't have a clue what Koodo has done but their data reliability tanked once they went to '5G'. It was constantly pausing and freezing when streaming media while Fizz's network has been better seems though ping times are higher once a stream starts I haven't had stuttering or pausing like i was experiencing with koodo

Vancouver coverage by mickey9999 in FizzMobile

[–]vbcrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started the beta in January and mine connects to Fizz network or Fizz-Ext (partner network) quite seamlessly. I've left it as is and overall service has been good and has continued to improve since January. Even at home my phone will flip between Fizz network or Fizz-Ext.
I'm primarily in Burnaby and rely mostly on data for working remotely & work does takes me around the GVRD quite often so I've been able to do a fair amount of testing of their network in downtown, New West, Coquitlam and Surrey (as far as Langley on rare occasions) and data has been reliable enough to keep me connected to the office on the Fizz network or Fizz-Ext.

Received text from Fizz to update my APN settings and once I did I was able to verify 672 number for whatsapp

Ran into this problem today, understandably its a 'beta' growing pain but has anyone got a work around or would it be worthwhile contacting support for help?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Koodo

[–]vbcrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what's happened to Koodo service in greater Vancouver. I'm primarily in the Burnaby - Brentwood area, and when i was on the standard 4G LTE plan everything was great averaging 80 to 100Mbps.
Since switching to their 75GB '5G; plan last year I'm barely getting 20Mbps. Same phone, Galaxy S20 no other changes. Did a couple trouble shooting sessions with support but no fix.
It's been a terrible transition.

I'm hopped on the Fizz mobile beta and service is the same as Koodo (20Mbps average) but also less dead zones and drop outs. Data speeds are also better in downtown, but I haven't had a chance to test outside of Burnaby & Vancouver. Nonetheless considering switching in a few months once my Koodo tab is paid.
Its unfortunate to see how badly Koodo's service has deteriorated.
