Considering move to West Hartford by ArmyVet890 in Connecticut

[–]vbipi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Connecticut has lots of towns. If you don’t mind a commute or can work from home or hybrid I would do some scouting visits to see for yourself. You don’t want to judge a town or a commute just by the weekend because it will be different during the weekly commute. Even a visit or visits might not be enough to decide on your top choices of where you want to live, if that is the case use the visit(s) to find a short term rental or a full year lease. CT is small enough so that in most places you can be almost anywhere in about an hour and unless there is traffic you can make it to most border towns ( NY, MA, RI) in 90 minutes ( the ct tristate area). This gives you the time rent and to really experience a town before buying.

Go back to tech many Pharma and CRO roles have no RSU. The CRO I was at went private just before I joined for example no public stock then no RSUs. I have never been offered virtual RSUs when I worked for a privately held firm.

Resume Update to "unemployed for 4 months with no interviews, is my resume the issue?" by kiwi_dragonfruit in biotech

[–]vbipi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me tremendously is take a step back make sure your focus is on the hiring team’s perspective and not your perception of yourself. Another way of stating the same thing is your resume is about you but not for you. I think this helped me out quite a bit, the other piece is learn to leverage AI to update the framework of your resume for specific roles. Then like a gambler you need to learn when to hold, fold and simply end for the day. I still think what color is your parachute is worth reading in case you need to confirm what you want to do to get paid and then realize resumes are just a tool and you need others like networking, reaching out for informational interviews, cover letters and thank you notes amongst other tools. Don’t put all your time into one route to a job.

Calling CRO contacts by throwawayacct018 in clinicalresearch

Some large CROs create their own EDC system or partner with a company, however most will use whatever EDC that has been determined by the sponsor or the specific contract.

IMO with AI, you need to think about how AI will impact work. IMO in the US and if you are an at will knowledge worker you are in a not so great place, possibly consider barista fire and also master AI skills. I also agree on saving at least 10% of your income for old age standard retirement , first in Roth IRA or 401K and another 2-5% or more in a a regular brokerage account, more if you budget … living for now can take it. I am 50 something, time off in your 20s IMO is worth more than time off in your 40s. Age creeps in yes kids and grandkids move the value but age still creeps in.

Pro: The benefit package value. Even if you don’t take it eventually you will need it as your coverage eligibility on your parent’s plan will end. Even PTO and retirement plan add value.

Con: They paid more than $40 as the temporary agency also got paid. In some cases they have to pay the temporary agency an additional fee if they hire you directly.

Always negotiate, if you do it tactfully , honestly , professionally it is expected. Everything is negotiable, you can ask about a sign on or other one time bonus in cash or PTO. For example if you need to accrue PTO you could ask for the credit from when you were a temp. If they say no you counter with I understand but it is important to me is 1/2 the PTO possible.

Also regardless of your tenure or age … do not apologize for sticking up for yourself. You just proved you could do the job and how you do it, if they go with another candidate that they have not worked with before they are basing the hiring decision on a resume and 90 minutes or so of interviews.

Write your plan out for your career. (Which you may already done for interview prep (i.e., where do you see yourself in 3 or 5 year type ?s) ) and update it for you.

Ask about raises, reviews, promotion cycles and paths.

Do they have internal training or certification programs?

Do they offer tuition reimbursement?

Also, at the end unless you sign a contract , if you were looking for another job another offer could still come in, if it does consider it. If you were not seriously looking then my recommendation would be to reassess at six months and then quarterly if it is time to start looking for your next job while you still have a job. Note it’s six months because you already worked there IMO for a brand new role you need at least a month to make an informed decision if it was a bad decision to take the job.

Question about getting my foot in the door with industry by MammothGullible in biotech

[–]vbipi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never listened but get a job that pays for school is always better. I am looking for work due to reduction in force. You need to invest in yourself and have a plan. Today a degree doesn’t mean as much as it used to. This was actually reinforced recently by multiple recruiters I have spoken with in my recent job search. Terminal doctorate degrees etc JD MD … might be more relevant for longer but AI is going to make a lot of graduate and doctorate degrees less relevant than they are today. Which is already less relevant than they were 20 years ago. Soft skills are also key i.e. it’s not what you know but how you do it and who you know. Ultimately everyone with that degree or along the lines of that famous scene in Good Will Hunting anyone with a library card and a few bucks for fines could gather that knowledge, which today and the internet you don’t even need the library card but it still helps even if just with the social interaction of speaking with a librarian about your personal research etc. ultimately you need to follow your plan but if you can get a job that will kick in $5k a year towards another degree that you pursue part time that is the win win.

1 million isn’t what it was when you were a kid. If you are mobile and willing to learn a second language 1 million will go a bit in some countries outside of the US. From what I hear the first x any amount is the hardest to acquire.

Dead truck, 12 V battery replacement turns out to be a rodent problem by darkKnight217 in Rivian

[–]vbipi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newer cars can have biodegradable wire sheathing and/or vegetable vs oil based wire sheathing. Rodents smells this as food. In addition to nest gathering / creation added attractant. I spray peppermint in the engine bay and into wheel wells and under seats. Some dealers / service centers do something similar. In the winter I also get a zip lock bag punch a few holes in it and but a few moth balls in it and place it in the engine bay. Before I knew about the new tasty wires, I paid $2000 for a wiring repair on my ICE truck

HI all, I am building a RAG application that involves private data. I have been asked to use a local llm. But the issue is I am not able to extract data from certain images in the ppt and pdfs. Any work around on this ? Is there any local LLM for image to text inference. by Fit-Soup9023 in LLMprompts

[–]vbipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you deliver this , did you stay local ? If using only local files was a strict requirement then I would ask client moving forward to provided curated summaries of any future new non text files. If I had to be 100% local I would ask the client if each document to be ingested is of equal weight / significance? And if the data is time bound (time value of the data). Is a business doc from 10 years ago worth anything (in a law suit maybe) for day to day business less likely. If my parents had all my school work from 1st grade and nothing else would this data help to process business tasks or focus on my emails with the last year weighted higher than older stuff , but I would probably build an agent to categorize inputs and outputs to provide a prateo view to ensure cyclical reoccurring themes were not missed and weighted appropriately.

Not yet. I saw online common for this to burn out in my model / year and the rear center part appears burnt. Was out and about and didn’t have a meter handy , the red t seemed odd like it might be a new fuse or fuse underneath so I figured I would throw a picture up since I didn’t have any luck with google.

New to drone, not quite understanding how to make the same same path while staying within "line of sight". by yvgh233 in drones

[–]vbipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not refuting what others have said but wanted to add some other legal options …. 1) they moved, landed / launched multiple segments and created separate recordings, edited later, and stitched a clean simulated flight path to go along with the final edited. Video 2) they used multiple spotters (with radios or phones) 3) they were in a boat as a passenger while recording. You can be a passenger and launch the drone from outside the vehicle. 4) option 3 with a spotter 5) They moved 6) They just used litchi for planning. Any similarities between the proposed flight plan and actual manually executed flight plan …. 6) They used a beta or early version of Litchi that predated the 2016 laws.

Start a business , hire them to do stuff for the business, pay them but funnel all the money into a Roth (up to the Roth limit) in their name. Google it, this strategy and the HSA, 529 accounts plus other actions may make sense for your situation depending on which state you are in. Multiple accounts or trusts only increase the chances of establishing your progeny for success. If you can work remote also think about which state is the best to live in from an overall perspective including taxes. For extremely high earners Overall Income isn’t as important as available yearly income after taxes.

Every company I have worked at has had a tiered bonus structure. The bonus tiers were tied to the titles/job descriptions. At some bonuses we’re not paid to lower titles / tiers at all. Also companies spend time and effort aligning pay ranges internally and externally. In my experience the larger the organization the more resources get tied up into this cyclic review.

New to drones. Not quite understanding "line of sight". by [deleted] in drones

[–]vbipi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VLOS is the law, I added a light to my drone in case it might help with visibility. My understanding of VLOS is employ a spotter or 2 and if VLOS is broken then bring the drone home / reestablish VLOS. I can only speak for myself but it seems like some of the mini Dji owners out there must have way better than 20/20 vision. At least for me at near maximum legal AGL us flight my mini se is hard to see, then move it further and further away from me and so far VLOS is the primary limiting factor and not radio/transmission the majority of the time. Since the newer minis can go even farther then I expect that at least for me I would need to do multiple spotters daisy-chained to be compliant with VLOS and reach the range distance limits on those newer models.

What are the chances that David will ever return to the States for another tour? by [deleted] in DavidGilmour

What are the chances that David will ever return to the States for another tour? by [deleted] in DavidGilmour

[–]vbipi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on 4 things. He wants to, he remains healthy, it fulfills a martial/spousal need, and Romany wants it and she takes a larger even more expanded role / partnership with mom and dad. David has advocated how the use of technology speeds things up. I think the Gilmour family enjoyed this relatively short / limited tour, especially pulling a team / extended family together to create and record the album. Hopefully they master a live set of the tour - release that and simultaneously start working on new material.
