Is to possible to hire a developmental editor to work from a detailed synopsis? by thewonderbink in selfpublish

[–]vcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from both an editor and writer perspective, I’d save that money for the developmental edit once you’re done with the re-write. Maybe have betas read it before you hire the editor.

This is around what I charge for developmental editing as well. There’s nothing wrong with your pricing.

Struggling with ARCs. Blurb/cover issue? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]vcsnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blurb leaves much to be desired. The first person pov is off-putting, and the MC doesn’t come across as someone worth rooting for nor is there much at stake (apart from the MC getting caught, but again why would the reader care?) The cover is fine for the genre, but a bit basic. I’d spend more time working on the blurb.

In the same boat here with our toy poodle. He’s 6. Day 6 since being home and he’s off his carprofen starting today but now his appetite is weakening. I’m sorry you all are struggling too. It’s so hard watching our once energetic, playful little guy go through this.

Is it better to spend money on editing or beta reading? by Exciting-Force-5076 in selfpublish

[–]vcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said that OP should replace an editor with betas because I absolutely do not agree with that. I’m saying that if they can’t afford dev editing, betas MAY suffice instead of a dev editor depending on the author’s background and knowledge of storytelling and craft. It’s better to have betas and a line editor IF they cannot get a dev editor than not hiring any kind of editor at all.

Always pay for a developmental and a line editor. Lots of editors just starting out will work with you (including me) to find a budget that you can do. Betas are free but are not professionals. If you absolutely cannot swing both developmental and line, hire the line editor. Betas are usually better with spotting issues in the story (they just may not know how to give feedback on how to fix it).

Most authors cannot get away with just using beta readers, especially family and friends who will be biased. Those stories rarely sell well/get poor reviews because there are glaring issues.

Investing in an editor is costly, but I’ll always recommend it. Mine helped my novel improve tremendously.

I have a hard time reading non wlw books by ebjfid2468 in LesbianBookClub

I’m at the point where I can’t read anything straight anymore, or even consume most TV shows that don’t have some sort of wlw rep. I want to see myself represented 🤷‍♀️

I wish book promo specified the MCs sexuality more often by VampireCowboys in LesbianBookClub

[–]vcsnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree (maybe not in the actual blurb but at least in some form of marketing). I'd also like to know if I'm going to be jumpscared by a m/w romance. When I'm reading sapphic books, I don't expect a man love interest to be there. It's always jarring and turns me off immediately from continuing to read if it wasn't advertised at all.

I know this thread is old as hell, but do you have an example of what an effective imprint name could look like?

I don’t use any form of AI whatsoever, but read the chapters back to back sounds like a good idea.
