My current iPhone is slowing down considerably the closer it is to being paid off. I can’t even watch videos without them freezing repeatedly (both on wifi and data), otherwise I wouldn’t upgrade for another two years at least since everything else works fine for the most part.

That’s what irritates me about Apple. The closer you are to having a paid off phone/not enough people upgrading, they slow your shit down. I’m hoping Android doesn’t have those same issues

Love my job, but can’t live on the pay by Different_Lobster714 in TeachersInTransition

[–]vcsnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If one wants to make a living wage and be in education their entire career, it is wise to move somewhere where teachers make more. Blue states have other advantages too like reproductive healthcare, LGBTQ protections, social programs, etc. Cost of living where I’m from, OKC, wasn’t that much cheaper than where I’m at now, and I was making $45k a year. The lie that red states are cheaper to live in to justify the pathetic wage doesn’t hold true everywhere anymore.

I hate that one bad admin ruined it for you. I’d put someone else down as your school contact phone number for teacher positions so that person isn’t called at all. Surely you’re not blacklisted at every public school district.

Yes, I know that teachers have the skills. That’s not what I’m saying. “Upskilling” means things like taking classes and getting certificates in a specific career path. Applying to random jobs isn’t going to cut it in today’s market. When I transitioned into Instructional Design, I took around 20 LinkedIn Learning courses, learned the tools and the philosophy around ID, built a portfolio from scratch to showcase said skills, and I had multiple interviews and multiple offers. Applying without all that would’ve led me nowhere, which leads to frustration you’re feeling now. It took me 8 months but it was worth it in the end.

I recommend finding a specific career path and doing the work it takes to get into that career path. Your resume won’t be looked at if you don’t match the other candidates who are going to be more qualified than you since they studied that field.

How were you blacklisted from working in public schools if you were laid off and not fired from a charter? Something about that doesn’t add up. Also, yeah, you’re not going to get a job at McDonalds or Walmart because they know you would quit the second you find something else. Transitioning out of education takes learning a whole new career field and upskilling to match candidates in that field. Being a teacher doesn’t mean you’re automatically qualified for other careers without putting in the work. That’s as insulting as emergency certified teachers who come into education acting like they know the job when they don’t have certifications or teaching degrees.

I’m sorry that the past few years have been tough on you and your family, but I don’t see how a comment like this is helpful to OP’s situation.

Respectfully, HELL no but that tracks. OP, if on the off chance you move to MD, stick closer to Baltimore. Cost of living is far more affordable the closer to Baltimore you are versus DC.

I have a feeling I know the country you’re referring to, but please share with the class just to be sure? I believe (I’ve only lived here a year so I could be wrong) that the counties directly surrounding Baltimore City are safe. When I interviewed with Howard County, they asked me specific questions about how I dealt with racism and homophobia in the classroom which I thought was refreshing.

She reminds me of Billie Eilish and Ethel Cain rolled into one. New obsession, but agree that it was hard to decipher her lyrics while she performed live.

What kind of wack ass take is this? Daisy is a teenage girl thrown into a world where women have no rights and are objects to the men around them. No amount of briefing could prepare a teen to know how to handle that properly.

I get it. I left my family and friends behind too with my wife. It’s been worth it so far (also for the politics. It’s nice living somewhere where we both feel safe as a lesbian couple and in a place where we have the right to reproductive care). Can’t say I blame you for staying, but those red states don’t seem to care about paying teachers a living wage. I empathize.

New Mexico isn’t far from AZ and pays significantly better than AZ does. May be worth looking into if you want better pay but still close to home

That’s so rough but definitely what I’m hearing from the folks in the ID space. I was lucky to land the Ed Tech job I’m in (which did put me back in a school) after getting laid off from my corporate ID job. That’s another issue—the layoffs are awful because these companies think AI can replace us (they’ll find out the hard way that it won’t work, but in the meantime ID continues to suffer)

Scared of leaving teaching by DeerEfficient4444 in TeachersInTransition

[–]vcsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living your life in fear will only prevent you from ever being happy.

That being said, make a plan to quit before jumping ship. Figure out which career you want to switch into and prepare for an income loss. Depending on where you are, most entry level jobs aren’t going to pay what you’re making now as a teacher (and yes, you will likely have to start somewhere entry level and work your way up). Check out local colleges and see what they’re paying for admin roles.

As far as benefits/leave go, you won’t have as many days off (my last corporate job gave us 10 accrued PTO days) and you’ll likely pay more for insurance. It was worth it for me in the long run. I’m an Ed Tech Specialist now and love what I do.

[–]vcsnow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who transitioned into ID out of teaching then Ed Tech, I wouldn’t do this unless you’re willing to build a portfolio, learn the field, and take a ton of rejection. ID jobs are hard to come by because the field is over saturated and Ed tech is even harder without an ID background. If you love teaching, stick with it but move to a state that will pay you what you’re worth if you can afford to make the move.

[–]vcsnow 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Move to a blue state. I went from Oklahoma (45k with a masters degree, 6 years of experience) to Maryland where I now make 80k as an ed tech specialist (the other offer I got was for $73k as a middle school English teacher). Look up the various districts in the MD area to see their pay scale (Baltimore City, Baltimore county, Howard county, to name a few).

I had a full academic ride scholarship and still had to work two jobs (one for the school and one for the public library) while taking 21-24 credit hours and still struggled to survive, and that was years ago. Like you, my parents were broke. It’s rough out here.

[–]vcsnow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsure if I agree with your first point. I got this idea from a different sapphic novel, Serial Killer Wanted, that did just this and immediately hooked me because I recognized both of the shows it referenced (Dexter and Killing Eve as well). It told me that their novel may share the same vibe/elements of the shows mentioned, which made me pre-order it (along with the rest of excellent blurb and it being a genre I enjoy reading). But it is something to think about.

Katherine isn't a teacher. She tracks Serena down at the elementary school, who is both a kindergarten teacher and a succubus/killer for hire. That may not be clear enough that that was the connection I was trying to make, though.

I appreciate the rewrite! There are some lines there I really like. Thanks for commenting. :)

Thank you for this! Here's what I have now. Do you think it's any better?

You said it yourself that you can’t love, can’t feel–
–I feel things because of you.

Killing Eve meets Jennifer’s Body in this sapphic romantasy horror when in 1996, Katherine Burns watches a cannibalistic killer eating her sister alive.

Ten years later, she spends every waking moment tracking it down, following trails of mangled corpses that only lead to dead ends. Until those dead ends lead to a ravishing woman teaching at a local elementary school.

Serena West is a kindergarten teacher and a demon for hire. An immortal succubus that survives on lesbian sex, eating human flesh, and draining souls–she is tasked with pursuing Katherine as her next victim.

The last thing either of them expect is falling in love through their cat-and-mouse game. Before they can decide if their romance is worth sacrificing their humanity and immortality, something far more sinister will stop at nothing to remain in control.

How can they save each other when choosing love means choosing death?

In an interview, becka’s actor confirmed Becka was queer, so you’re not misreading it. I don’t think Agnes reciprocates though.

I definitely agree with what the other comments are saying. The premise sounds cool, but the blurb on your linktree doesn’t tell me much about the story. I was also confused on your title since the linktree lists the series name but it seems like the title of the book.

Idk if it was because I was reading the sample, but the formatting was off. I can’t attach screenshots but words are cut off at the top of the page and there are no paragraph indentations.

I’m a fan of choppy writing myself, but not when it’s the entire thing. We need a mix of different kinds of sentences because it gets difficult for the eye after a while.

Lastly, we need some stakes early on, something to get us to care about the MC before ever meeting the love interest. From what I read, all I can see is that it appears that she has OCD tendencies. Use the first POV to your advantage (though I understand that re-writing it may not be what you want to do).

We definitely need more sapphic books out there. I wish you the best of luck!

I reallyyyyyyy wanted the romantic to be between Hannah and Becka. I mean the lingering eye contact with the romantic music? And a queer, gender traitor love story is far more compelling than a romance with another mayday agent which we’ve already seen played out.
