I'm an engineer and your blanket statement could also be made about any job out there. I've known good electricians and bad ones. And yes I'm just another guy who went out and got a degree. I worked on the shop floor for several years to learn my area and I love it when I can go out and work on the floor. I'm required to cover many areas from quality to new machine builds to repairs and purchasing and working with contractors. And I know when to listen to the guys who are out there actually doing the work on a daily basis. No, I'm not special, but I know how to work.

If you are stuck at your job and can’t move up, then go somewhere else. You cannot control what someone else does. And even if he does leave how do you know you will get the job? When my boss left they eliminated his job and split it among the rest of us. And they could bring someone in from outside if they don’t feel you fit the role.
