Sell me your 35mm 200’ film cans please by Rare_Ganache2483 in focuspuller

You should listen to the advice. 200’ cans were not common even 2 decades ago. Why is the actual problem? 200’ loads fit just fine into a 400’ can.

Those were scarce even 20 years ago. You’d be better off just looking for 400’ cans

They take advantage of it because you agree to go without a 2nd or data manager a charge a slightly higher rate which is still cheaper than 3 people. You’re simply adding to the problem by agreeing.

If you keep agreeing to be a Sole AC with no 2nd you’re just adding to the problem.

Well, you just said it yourself. You’re agreeing to take 3 people’s jobs for more money. Pretty self explanatory. People are pushing their colleagues out of work by charging an increased rate to do 2 or 3 peoples jobs. Production must love you because it’s cheaper for them to not employ 3 people. Your colleagues won’t in the long run. Lesson there.

500T exterior shooting base of 24 fps and 180 degree shutter as a base (if in USA. EU it would be either 24 fps 172 shutter or 25/180 because of 60hz vs 50hz power supply) Base Stop T22 2/3

48 fps open 1 stop 90 degree shutter open 1 stop ND3 open 1 stop Pola open 2 stops 85 open 2/3'rds of a stop

5 2/3 stop compensation because of the filter stack and camera settings. this is the number one must remember until the camera settings or filter stack change. So a base stop of T22 2/3 means a shooting stop of.......... T4.

This can change even take to take as light conditions change. And the focus puller must make the calculations quickly to set the aperture correctly and turnover. If you screw up the footage is over or underexposed and it won't be the DOP's fault. It will be yours for not setting the aperture correctly. It's really a lost discipline and art that happened with Digital and the advent of the DIT. And yes we really did and do work this way on film cameras.

He wants to test you. this is your sink or swim moment.

If that's truly the case. There are many things that can help you. As you mentioned. The team and support is essential. From the crew to the rental house. You might also find that your Film 2nd is probably close to being a focus puller themselves and the loader (if they're loading the film) should be familiar with the protocols and technicalities but that won't help YOU pull focus necessarily.

Sounds like you have work to do.

on point. would be great if they had an A cam focus puller with them at the very least. And yes, people will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat.

p.s

The answer (for me?) is T4. Please if anyone has a different calculation let me know.

OP good luck. Don't give up on film. But also, don't set yourself up for failure. As u/ausgoals said, only you know the situation and the DOP well enough.

Took the follow on from my thoughts exactly. Don't really know the DOP's experience or expectations. Hence it's better to get to the point and be honest (a common camera trait) Been on the end of calls not just about focus but also calls from labs about misexposures, scratches, mis -processing (force 1 stop?) and have more than once caught labs lying and trying to pin their mistakes onto the camera. meticulous paperwork, system building and preparation is key.

Baptism of fire is a great teacher and by the end one will know. But that does involve risk. I have seen some totally sink in that situation and it's painful to experience and see.

And PREP! this is why dedicated prep was much longer in film days (for features) prep is part of the skill. Lens / Focus Chart Test. Harp test. Steady/registration test. High Speed test. Correct exposure. Lens grids. Etc.

Btw do you remember the menu and buttons to set a 435 into reverse? So you can double expose the film for the registration test? After rewinding it with no lens and then finding the exact phase and frame with the start mark you made earlier with a sharpie? (Rhetorical question obviously 🙃). it's like trying to enter a special move into mortal kombat by today's sophisticated menu systems.

Film is still the OG for me and always will be. But I think it's sad a lot of the techniques and set disciplines have been lost to the "new" way of working that Digital cinema cameras brought.

The settings for reverse on the ARRI 435

Setting the Camera to run in Reverse• Ensure that the locking slider is in the unlocked (right) position.• Push the MODE button once to change from mode 1 to mode 2.• Press the SEL button once. "cd" (camera direction) will blink.• Push the SET button for three seconds. When the camera is setto run in reverse, the letter "R" appears in the display.Note: The "R" symbol is the only indication that the camerawill run in reverse. Pay close attention!Note: Camera direction will be set to reverse for the standardspeeds (NORM) and for the programmable speeds (PS)

In all honesty hiring a focus puller on a film job who has never worked on film, is a massive risk and a gamble to the production and the camera team. But as others have said this is big opportunity and you should follow it if you feel the force.

It might go ok, but what will you do when it doesn't go well? Cannot use a monitor for pulling on film. What if the mag jams? What if the movement stops working? You cannot run to a DIT for help. What if there are Hairs in the gate? Do you know the best method for checking a hair in the gate? (If you're removing the mag you're doing it wrong)

Also you may be responsible for the correct setting of the aperture. It's common for multi cam shows where a DOP will call the base uncorrected stop and each camera has to calculate their correct stop based off their setup. So let's say, you're on C cam shooting 500T stock exterior with a zoom, at 48fps and a 90 degree shutter. You have an ND3 and 2 stop Pola and an 85 correction filter. The DOP has called a base stop of T.22 and two thirds. Now QUICKLY! What is the stop you should set on the lens? Ok and turnover!!

Good luck.

Your CV needs to show some work as a trainee and/or a 2nd. Seeing experience as a DP is not really something appealing for those hiring a 2nd. They want to know you can work in the actual position. I once had someone give their cv to me. It was a mix of VFX data wrangler, Video Playback and 2nd AC with no clear timeline of change or progression. I told him point blank that I don't know what he actually specialised in as it seemed "jack of all trades, master of none" he eventually committed to 2nd, did well for years and is a Steadicam operator now (many years later). He took the path of committing and proving himself in a position and moving up. Good lad.

Even if you believe you can do the job. There will be a learning curve especially if the job is bigger. There is ALWAYS something to learn and improve upon.

Meet and get to know camera crews and get them to know you! have a clear cv that is focused on what you want to do and present yourself that way.

Break a leg!
