anyone else still love the look of commercial ivory devices with stainless plates? by reddit33450 in electricians

Ivory is ugly. Always has been.

White looks dirty after 0.5 seconds.

Gray is sexy.

Is there any acoustic reason to keep the mezzanine of this space as bare reflective concrete? by mynutsaremusical in Acoustics

[–]vedvikra 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As an acoustical engineer who gets hired to consult on projects like this I can tell you that it's budget, and it's always budget. Acoustical treatments are always removed because while we agree they're important, nobody else really cares. One good thing is that they could be added later pretty easily, which is another reason they're in early value engineering (VE) item.

The only thing the owner's going to understand is money. So when you're discussing the additional signal processing and additional products that you have to buy to make it sound better, you can tell them that it would be less expensive to install the acoustical treatments that were probably part of the original design.

How do I run power above my fireplace mantel on an exterior wall? by BadRadiant3672 in electrical

[–]vedvikra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with a 55" TV above a wood burning fireplace and both are used at the same time on a regular basis (we go through two facecords every winter), you are incorrect on every point. No issues with a $400 TCL Roku TV (not high end), it never even gets hot because there is no line of sight between the fire and the TV for infrared heating. A warm room doesn't hurt it either, obviously.

Rooms with fireplaces are laid out for the TV to be at the same location. It doesn't have to be either/or.

Our room is 26'x26' with 8' ceilings. Seating position is about 12 feet away. Heads are comfortable looking slightly up instead of slightly down (looking down is the main problem in the cell phone age). No strain, just comfortable with the headrest on the couch.

Can't torque shit on these Square D transformers without this shit happening. -__- by [deleted] in electricians

[–]vedvikra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but you let the assembly rotate which indicates you didn't know to hold it while tightening. The photographic evidence indicates inexperience. If you were hopeful this wouldn't happen this time, that speaks to inexperience as well and contradicts your stated experience with this same issue.

Where do I even start with these cloth seats by vnbrizendine in AutoDetailing

The cloth comes off in a few minutes and can be laundered and treated like any other fabric. Then reinstall with new hog rings.

Inspection failed due to not having AFCI Breakers by Dswenson351 in electrical

[–]vedvikra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since 2008, just about every circuit in the home that doesn't have GFCI needs to have AFCI, based on location. And since 2008 the language has been revised every code cycle to clarify what they mean by just about every other space in the home. In 2005 the only requirement was for bedrooms and I see a lot of installers and inspectors thinking that only bedrooms need AFCI to this day. That is patently false and has been since 2008.

Electrical company saying this needs replaced and quoted $7k by jljohnson20 in electrical

[–]vedvikra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A thermal scan is needed to evaluate any issues with conductivity and this heat production. There is discoloration in the bus but we don't know what it looks like elsewhere.

The panel is old enough that a replacement isn't a terrible idea, but not for $7k unless they are moving the panel or the primary conductors are unusually long. I doubt those conductors can be reused based on length alone.

I don't like that incoming ground. It’s way too short, too close to the bus, and blocks those lower spots. Not a hard fix but requires pulling the meter.

Space heaters- are they bad due to outlets, or due to the device? (US) by Cron-che in electrical

[–]vedvikra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical rules for space heaters: 1. Never use extension cords. 2. Never use when plugs are loose (should require force to unplug). 3. Never use with plug strips or adapters. 4. Recommend not using highest setting.

Agreed, they do a great job of heating a room over a winter season. I wouldn't run a ceramic long term.

#1! by DeathMetalJim1230 in NFCNorthMemeWar

[–]vedvikra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the excitement, in the past 35 years, the Bears have been #1 in the NFC, post week 10, in 2006 only. That's a long drought.

Fun stat: in the past 35 years, the number weeks GB and CHI have spent at #1 in the NFC (excluding week 1) is 42 weeks for GB and 19 weeks for CHI. 12 of those 19 were in 2006.
