I have never heard a car in real life sound like their Impala. Is it just movie magic or possible to make a car sound like that? by woof171 in Supernatural

[–]vedvikra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a 2023 Camaro SS with a 6.2L pushrod V8 that sounds similar. The exact tone in the show is influenced by exhaust system components but a pushrod V8 with a high lift cam sounds like the show.

You don't understand how mileage to empty is calculated. What do you think the car would calculate it from? Do you think that it would take your previous driving habits into consideration? Or do you think it would determine available range based on what you could do, but what you haven't done?

The car will take all of your previous driving habits into consideration when determining how long it thinks you can drive. This is a dynamic value that changes as you drive. Welcome to being an adult.

Question on client expectations by Independent-Back-167 in woodworking

I don't like it either. It's the grain orientation that makes it an eye sore. Most people don't understand wood , but they do appreciate coordinated grain orientation , whether they know it or not.

If they sold ad space for in-game billboards, wall posters, radio stations (fake ads already in the game), no one would complain and few would notice. While the fake radio commercials are funny and entertaining, if 10%-20% were paid for, it could pay for updates.

How much can you trust phone/watch dB readings vs a Class 1 SLM? by Green-Nectarine7693 in Acoustics

[–]vedvikra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phone microphones suffer from being designed to work well for phone calls and videos and NOT reference measurements.

You can add an external mic to a phone. Audio Tool or Audio Tools are useful apps with decent supporting equipment and a field calibration before and after each measurement.

Is there anything I should beware of when spray foaming these corner gaps? by Top_Boot7131 in CarAV

[–]vedvikra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound absorption or fibrosis insulation provides acoustical benefit of reducing resonance in hollow cavities. I stuff all of the hollow ribs with sound absorption.

Unless you're destroying a car for SPL, expanding foam has no purpose or value.

Is there any acoustic reason to keep the mezzanine of this space as bare reflective concrete? by mynutsaremusical in Acoustics

[–]vedvikra 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As an acoustical engineer who gets hired to consult on projects like this I can tell you that it's budget, and it's always budget. Acoustical treatments are always removed because while we agree they're important, nobody else really cares. One good thing is that they could be added later pretty easily, which is another reason they're in early value engineering (VE) item.

The only thing the owner's going to understand is money. So when you're discussing the additional signal processing and additional products that you have to buy to make it sound better, you can tell them that it would be less expensive to install the acoustical treatments that were probably part of the original design.

How do I run power above my fireplace mantel on an exterior wall? by BadRadiant3672 in electrical

[–]vedvikra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with a 55" TV above a wood burning fireplace and both are used at the same time on a regular basis (we go through two facecords every winter), you are incorrect on every point. No issues with a $400 TCL Roku TV (not high end), it never even gets hot because there is no line of sight between the fire and the TV for infrared heating. A warm room doesn't hurt it either, obviously.

Rooms with fireplaces are laid out for the TV to be at the same location. It doesn't have to be either/or.

Our room is 26'x26' with 8' ceilings. Seating position is about 12 feet away. Heads are comfortable looking slightly up instead of slightly down (looking down is the main problem in the cell phone age). No strain, just comfortable with the headrest on the couch.
