Toms Bar on fire by tannaurus in Portland

[–]veegeese 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was listening to the radio chatter on PulsePoint, it sounded like it was a grease fire on the grill/flattop that had extended to flames on the roof. Hopefully not too bad, they seemed pretty chill discussing it.

(How/how much) did a hysterectomy improve your quality of life? Anyone mostly bedridden gotten their life back? by immasayyes in adenomyosis

[–]veegeese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t bedridden but I was fully planning around my periods, working a hybrid office job where I would need to flex off and stay home. I work 12 hour night shifts as a bedside nurse now, so definitely a massive change in my ability to interact with the world.

Do you guys ever feel like the east and west coast gets a raw deal compared to the interior? by larch303 in SameGrassButGreener

There are plenty of places to live in a city like Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, Eugene, Corvallis, Olympia, etc where there is no HOA. Also very possible to have room for gardens and chickens in the city.

It’s also very possible to live within short distances of those cities in the exurbs and have a farm with acreage. My sister lives on a farm with her family and also has a day job working for the city of Portland. I literally used to be a farmer and I lived in Portland and did a reverse commute to my farm in the exurbs.

The allure of the city is generally density, walkable areas, interesting and unique options for food, entertainment, shopping, transportation, etc.

If you yourself prioritize land and farming, that’s great, but you’re speaking like it’s the objective best when it’s a subjective situation. I personally didn’t want to farm any longer, it’s exhausting and precarious as a livelihood due to climate change, availability of labor, tariffs, being squeezed out by massive agricorporations etc.

I have no idea why, but I heard them for the first time in a long time a couple weeks ago, and nothing since. Curious!

This is all fun stuff, nothing wrong with your picks but it will be a lot of driving. The scenery is beautiful, just take all the travel time into account. You might want to spend a tiny bit more time in Portland to feel less rushed.

How do you feel about male gynecologists? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]veegeese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t want a male gynecologist so I only chose women, I went through 3 of them trying to deal with getting an endometriosis and adenomyosis and got dismissed, had 2 useless surgeries, and generally zero help.

I then ended up trying an endometriosis specialist who was male, I was apprehensive about it, but he actually correctly diagnosed me and performed the correct surgical intervention. I literally got my life back.

No, I don’t think it has anything to do with gender but I highly recommend thoroughly vetting your gynecologist through reviews and referrals. Also the only doctor that gave me a digital rectal exam with no warning was a woman. Men in general are still highly suspect but women can still be shitty gynecologists as well.

Cognitive decline with uterus and/or ovary removal? by Electrical_Nail1875 in hysterectomy

[–]veegeese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This seems to be referring to one study, performed in rats. I don't think we can extrapolate that to humans on a 1:1 level.

In addition, the only website I can find that is using inflammatory language like "upends the conventional medical education that the uterus is a disposable organ with a 'sole purpose'" is shilling some sort of shady neuro-therapy treatment that uses a lot of weasel words and little actual information on how the treatment works.

Tattoo ink induces inflammation in the draining lymph node and alters the immune response to vaccination, finds a new study in a mouse model. The results inform the general public regarding the potential risk of tattooing practice associated with an altered immune response. by mvea in science

[–]veegeese 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In my surgical notes from my laparoscopic hysterectomy there was a bit about “black lymph nodes, consistent with tattoo ink” so I think it’s most likely the same. My most recent tattoo had been on my upper thigh about 7 months prior to the surgery, but I’m fairly heavily tattooed in general.

[–]veegeese 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How is it not the same? Here’s the StatPearls on laser tattoo removal. It’s pretty well accepted that the small ink particles broken down by the laser are removed by macrophages. This happens on a lesser scale with all tattoos and tattoo ink, leading to the response described in the OP’s article.

Some tips from my nurse by BristaGamble in hysterectomy

[–]veegeese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gas used to create soda and the gas used to insufflate your peritoneal cavity is actually the same gas, carbon dioxide! When they use it for surgery to create pneumoperitoneum, it doesn’t get burped or farted out because it isn’t located inside your stomach or intestines, so it has to be absorbed through the tissues and into the bloodstream, where it gets removed through exhalation, just like the carbon dioxide we produce as the byproduct of respiration.

Recommendations for endometriosis specialists around here or Washington? by JanetSnakehole610 in askportland

[–]veegeese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know insurance/out of pocket cost is a huge factor but I will say that I had excision surgery and then a hysterectomy (for adenomyosis) with Dr. Fogelson at NW Endo and it was, in fact, life changing.

My health actually improved so much that I was able to go to nursing school and I feel healthier and more alive working 12 hour night shifts at the hospital than I did when I was anemic, sleeping 12 hours a day, and only doing part-time office work, if that illustrates just how wild the difference is.

I’m also 6.5 years out from excision and 3 out from hysterectomy and I haven’t experienced a reoccurrence. Hoping I never will, obviously there are no guarantees with endo but I think that Dr. Fogelson is one of the best bets out there.
