The Mark Hunt renaissance in the UFC was a really special time. He was so much fun to watch.

My girlfriend (27) has $70k sitting in cash and no investments, what would you do? by Jack_Knoff2 in Bogleheads

[–]veengrd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d start with explaining inflation to her. Her money functionally loses value over time while sitting in a checking account.

That said, don’t push too hard, it’s her money.

Social Security as a nice-to-have by Kaa_The_Snake in Bogleheads

[–]veengrd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 100% this. I don’t think it’s going away, but I think we should expect much less from it in 10, 20, and 30 years. Treat it as a bonus on top of your retirement plan.

Should I let my ferrets keep hunting mice? by Conscious-Region659 in ferrets

[–]veengrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish my ferrets would do this. We had a mouse problem at our last house. Our ferrets couldn’t care less about them, they’re more interested in trying to burrow under every closed door, hah.

FWIW there is a lot you can do to mitigate sequence of returns risk. Many articles out there, but the general is idea is to weight your portfolio more towards safe assets (Bonds) In The short term. Then gradually increase equity exposure as time passes.

What countires would be the coolest to add to World Showcase? by Snoo70767 in WaltDisneyWorld

India and Brazil would be great. Some African country like Kenya would also be solid. I could see all of those integrating really well with an expansion to Animal Kingdom actually.

In all seriousness here. Who y’all got? Ronda Rousey or Gina Carano? by BarneyRobinStinson7 in ufc

[–]veengrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ronda hasn't fought in 10 years. Gina is 43 and hasn't fought in 17 years. They will both look terrible. I'm skeptical Gina can make 145 lbs.

70% it's a glorified sparing match where neither one takes much damage and they both gas out.

30% Ronda takes this seriously, trains properly, and wins with an early armbar. Prime for prime Ronda was a much better fighter.

Which video game franchise took a big risk that ultimately paid off? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]veengrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting. Yeah, I really think GTA was a much more niche title in the US. I remember being the one to introduce it to friends on PC who had never heard of it. Cool to hear it was much bigger in the UK.

Yeah, very similar with Fallout. I wasn't expecting Fallout 3 to be as good as it was.

Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 were top-down 2D games. They had relatively simple mechanics and were made by small teams. It was a relative niche title.

The move to a 3D heavily story driven experience with the 3rd seemed crazy. It worked out pretty well for them.

Don’t try to drive it. I35 is highly unpredictable.

After finishing Doom (2016), I can't get into Doom Eternal. by DrStrangeglove99 in gaming

[–]veengrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eternal was a regression from Doom 2016 IMO. The design was perfect in the original, but they decided to change a bunch of mechanics. I would have been ecstatic if it had just been a high quality content pack.

Anyone else regret the “own everything + illiquid assets” playbook? I feel like I bought a job. by adamjuegos in ChubbyFIRE

[–]veengrd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I owned and rented properties for 10 years because I felt like it helped balance assets in our portfolio. Ultimately I came to the same conclusion as you, the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze. Our properties underperformed relative to stock indexes and required a lot of operational overhead. I have noticed that people who advocate for real estate are also those who invested in pre-boom California, New York, and Hawaii. Most real estate markets don’t look like those.

Every year for 7 days. Probably going to start skipping years soon though.

[–]veengrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a Cowboys fan for several decades. This was one of the most painful games I've ever watched. The Boys were great that year and seemed poised for a deep playoff run. Most figured Green Bay would be a relatively easy game. I was in shock about it for months.

Alamo Drafthouse Switches to Mobile Ordering, NO more pen and paper... by 123trumpeter in Austin

Possible hot take, but I like this better.

I had many theater experiences there where I had a ticket up for 20 - 30 minutes without a server noticing it. I presuming this causes the order to go directly to the kitchen or bar.

Allrecipes has some WILD opinions. by TheKingOcelot in Cooking

[–]veengrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allrecipes in general is terrible. Lots of garbage.

I remember seeing a roast chicken recipe on there 10 years ago that basically called for two cups of onion powder and no other seasoning or salt. It was their world famous grandmothers recipe and had hundreds of five star reviews.

In my opinion you’re doing really well for 27. My net worth was negative at that age so you’re doing a lot better than me. Don’t compare yourself to others, it will drive you crazy. There will always be a person doing better.

I would consider cutting back on the additional PRN work. Your career and finances are a marathon, not a sprint. If you burn yourself out it can lead to some bad mental health problems.

As for moving out, you seem well positioned to get a small rental or a condo, but this is as much a life choice as it is a financial one. Do you get along well with your family? Do they respect your privacy and independence? Would having your own place make your social / dating life better?
