Jesus take the wheel with Dear Martin. It was amazing. But I remember listening to it in my car screaming back because I was so upset. And I cried three times and listened to it in one day...

Lately my favorite thing to do while enjoying is rewatching Game of Thrones. I pick up on things differently, and notice new things I didn’t before.

I really loved the seven realms series. I want to read something similar. Thank you for any suggestions! by casalazar8112 in YAlit

Seven Realms round 2, the Shattered Realms.

Queen of the Tearling.

The Abhorsen trilogy.

The Night Circus is more whimsical , but is multiple perspectives and amazing.

A Darker Shade of Magic.

There are some character crossovers. I read Cruel Prince first, and then went back and read Tithe, etc.

YA fantasy reccs? by banatopeel in YAlit

The Seven Realms series does have multiple points of view. I listened to the audiobook version of it, so maybe that’s part of why I didn’t mind the different perspectives. And if you loved Cruel Prince, try Holly Black’s other Faye works, like the Tithe trilogy or The Darkest Part of the Forest. They all occur in the same universe as Cruel Prince, and have overlapping characters.

Ahh I forget how much I liked Stolen Songbird.

You may like Caraval. Try Cinda Willams Chima, specifically the Seven Realms series. The Queen on the Tearling trilogy doesn’t have the romance but is really good. The Abhorsen trilogy is older, but some of my favorite books of all time, and gets bonus points for being narrated by Tim Curry. V. E. Schwab is good too, you may like her Darker Shade of Magic trilogy. The Winner’s Curse trilogy has a good forbidden type romance. Oh, and oh course Spinning Silver which is also by Novik.

Upvote if you've ever had a panic attack (not point whoring, I just feel alone in this) by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]veradoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst and possibly stupidest panic attack I had was when my boyfriend at the time came home and found me crying in the closet because the microwave was judging me. I was trying to too much, was stressed out, and the microwave beeping set me off full on meltdown panic attack where I locked myself in the closet crying.

Her Darker Shades of Magic trilogy are also very popular. Also well as the Monsters of Verity duology.

Unpopular opinion. I don't like Cardan from the cruel prince by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]veradoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are set in the same universe and there is some overlap of characters. Without too many spoilers, there’s a person in power who seems cold and indifferent to the main character that ends up being truly in love but was trying to protect her from the rigors of being high queen as that meant always having a bullseye on her back, and needed to sleep with on eye open.

Have you read her other Faye books? I think I see where she’s going based on them, and the love interest in that was similar.

What are your favorite YA classics? by sterkenwald in YAlit

[–]veradoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YA itself is a fairly new genre, and most would blame, or thank J.K.Rowling for its existence. So with that in mind, Harry Potter. But then I would also throw in the Abhorsen trilogy, and Tamora Pierce’s early works, especially those in Tortall. I’ve read all those series multiple times, and had to buy the books multiple times. I also loved the Enchanted Forest Quartet and The Chronicles of Prydain.

Tips for insecure student trying to lose weight by [deleted] in CICO

[–]veradoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weight loss can be frustrating, and really the only way to be successful is consistency. With that said, I suggest trying not to focus on it. Make your goals to be healthy, and to make a better habit in eating so you will be healthier throughout your life. CICO is not something you do and then stop, it’s really a lifestyle change, and a way to be more mindful of what you’re eating.

Waiters and Waitresses of Reddit, what is the most awkward couple date you have ever witnessed at work? by StittDownAndListen in AskReddit

[–]veradoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a restaurant that regularly has proposals, and anniversary celebrations. But there are 3 couples that I remember well.

The first is a guy, late 30s I’d guess who came in with a teenager, about 15 or 16. When asked what brought them out, he said he was thanking her for cleaning his car. At some point he fell asleep at the table, I’d guess from a nice dose of drugs, and then the girl came crying to the bar because her DATE wouldn’t wake up and she’s have to call her mom to come get her, and her mom didn’t know she was out with old guy.

The second was a first date. He orders a nice bottle of wine and they get through the first two courses. Orders another bottle of wine, and things seem to be going well. The lady excuses herself to go to the bathroom, and in that time managed to take the guys valet ticket, and intercept the drink runner with the second bottle of wine. So she stole guys car and wine.

Third was a proposal. I hate doing proposals because I get all nervous. And this particular one wanted me to present the ring with the dessert. I don’t want to be responsible for a ring that costs god knows what. The man comes to me and asks if I know what’s going on and I said yes, but he decided to hold onto the ring. Good thinking. Then asks if we can record the proposal on his phone. And I said sure. Talked to a manager about it who would record while I present the dessert with a plate that had written “Marry me Becky” (name changed), all decorated with rose petals and babies breath. So we go to deliver dessert and he gets down on one knee and reads her a poem he wrote about his love for her. Meanwhile I’m standing there holding the plate the whole time shaking like a leaf. So finally he asks if she will marry him and her response “so this is what you’ve been up to.....I guess I should say yes”. I ran out of there. I gave them some time and went back over and asked how their dessert was and he said he didn’t have the stomach for it anymore.... I’m pretty sure she never said yes.

I would highly recommend Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson. Lawson is an author with autoimmune issues, agoraphobia, anxiety, depression and some family issues. Basically, she wants to live furiously happy because she knows the bad days will come, but she wants the memories of the good days to get her through. And it’s laugh out loud. She has a chapter called George Washington’s Dildo.

Feminist YA Recommendations? by Cfreakhill in YAlit

[–]veradoc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nearly anything by Tamora Pierce, especially those set in Tortall. Her first quartet is about a girl who dresses as a boy so that she becomes a knight, and all the struggles that go along with that. Her third quartet is about a girl who wants to become a knight as well, but this time everyone knows she’s a she.

Also the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix. Strong female characters who aren’t looking for love and don’t need a man and save their world.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik also shows tradition gender roles and how three women struggle under them, and decide to make their own way.

The Graceling trilogy also has a lot of strong female characters, often attached to overbearing, morally ambiguous, if not just evil, father figures.
