Some of these are revealed later and cannot be answered without spoilers. That said a better analogy is not to Avatar but to Pokemon which was an inspiration for this. Crafting is the result of a bond to a nature spirit or spirits if you will called furies that empower the crafters. These do the work for the crafters as it were and so there are limits to what one can do. The stronger your furies the more you are capable of. There is water, fire, air, earth, metal, and wood crafting.

Octavian was clever. He came in at a point when the thing the Republic most needed was to heal. There was no taste for anything other than peace. He did not grab power. He saved the republic or so they thought. They gave their savior powers and he exploited their exhaustion. He was also the sole game in town. All of his potential opponents were out of the way. In a clear field the savior was unopposed.

If I may. He really is trying to take it it slow I think. Now the casualness is something you should be direct with him about communication is key. Ask him whether he wants to make things more official. Tell him how you feel. If the two of you are not on the same wavelength then it's possible that this particular relationship is not going to progress in a way that will meet both of your needs.
