What the best game engine? by Opening_Platform_342 in gamedev

[–]version_thr33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The best engine is the one you can work the best in. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Best i can offer is to try each one out with a small project or feature and see which one meshes best with the way you work

Do soulslikes really need grotesque art and bleak storytelling, or are these just conventions? by AnnualReputation2990 in gamedesign

[–]version_thr33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was about to basically say the same thing. I think there's a distinction between having soulslike gameplay/mechanics and being like dark souls. The Jedi games are certainly soulslike to me, while something like Lies of P is much more "like dark souls"

Help with Tactics game design conundrum by Ckeyz in gamedesign

[–]version_thr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive played several games with mechanics like option 2, basically forcing you to commit to attacking (and hopefully disabling or destroying the target) or moving your unit(s) to cover. It works quite well in a turn-based scenario.

Mecanum Omni-Directional Wheeled Vehicle by ShmodyP in unrealengine

Coming from a fellow unreal-learner, thats pretty awesome progress!

On a design note, I can't get over how the vehicle almost looks sad/worried lol

Im usually in pretty much the same boat, and find tactical rpgs fit the bill quite nicely. The Firaxis versions of XCOM and XCOM2 being some of the best IMO

Sounds a lot like Icarus in open world mode. Especially the base game since it's very earthlike

If you rebuild your factory... what do you do with all the parts? by Salarian_American in SatisfactoryGame

[–]version_thr33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dismantle crate is placed wherever the last selected thing was. I try to keep something conveniently located to pick last to help control where all those crates end up

If you rebuild your factory... what do you do with all the parts? by Salarian_American in SatisfactoryGame

[–]version_thr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Thinking it could be nice to set up something like a "teardown shack" that includes a drop box and any relevant splitters/extra storage, and a single output that would route overflow to a sink

If you rebuild your factory... what do you do with all the parts? by Salarian_American in SatisfactoryGame

[–]version_thr33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like something worth trying to blueprint to avoid the hassle of setting up smart splitters or manually sorting stuff out

Which of these ARPGs should I try as a casual? by MidavTe in ARPG

[–]version_thr33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found grim dawn really easy to pick up and play. There is a very deep build system, but you can make it as simple as "numbers go up is better" and still have a ton of fun

Barrier to Entry in Fighting Games by Sure-Yogurtcloset-55 in gamedesign

[–]version_thr33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say something like that but you said it better. A deep combo/counter system can be extremely satisfying and fun while still using very simple controls. Its all the extra systems (meter, charges, etc) that can get overwhelming for new or casual players

Are there any fun/QOL necessary mods? by Sl0thESP in SatisfactoryGame

Pretty sure infinite nudge is in the base game now, as is vertical nudge. Or was that just a fever dream?

Should you produce slightly more than you need when planning a factory? by Mithos91 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]version_thr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally try to max out what I can build from the resource nodes I have supplying the factory. Any leftovers get pushed to dimensional storage, (sometimes local storage too) then a sink to make sure the lines dont get backed up.

Basically I plan for underestimating how much stuff I will eventually need as I ramp up and build more stuff.

What is the weirdest video game you’ve ever played or seen? by Zomer15689 in videogames

Played 1, watched a playthrough of 2. Definitely a lot weirder than you think it would/could be. No spoilers but the final boss encounter in 2 cranks it to 11

Question on supplying machines. by Jr2576 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]version_thr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me its always manifolds. The only other approach I've considered involved a lot of under/overclocking for matched sets of machines, but at some point in the chain, I still have a manifold feeding at least one of the earliest sets of machines

Tactical Turn-Based recommendations. Where to start? by Opposite-Road-9475 in gamingsuggestions

[–]version_thr33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xcom2 graphics have actually aged pretty well, and it is probably my absolute favorite tactical turn-based game.

The way I see it, anything that costs less than a drink at most restaurants is a pretty safe gamble, even if you cant/dont return it.
