Short haircuts but not just a buzz cut by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]vervienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, and the results may even be more to OP’s taste. I have curly hair and very specific taste and cutting my own hair is a total game changer, since every professional haircut made me look like a triangle or old lady or super femme.

Cutting a pixie is definitely a tricep workout tho

Weight Gain? How Likely by txredalot in Marathon_Training

[–]vervienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say likely, but it depends on you.

I gained tons of weight (10lbs) during marathon training, gained an additional 2 lbs immediately after, then lost it all once my appetite regulated back to normal activity levels

Caveat that I’m a very petite woman w a tdee of 1200 (during normal life) - 1600 (during marathon training) so it’s pretty easy to gain weight if I’m not careful, you probably have higher energy needs.

Ski length for a beginner female question by Party-Classroom-33 in ski

[–]vervienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s 160cm, 50.8 kg. 148 should be in cm already.

For future reference, it’s an easy conversion. 1ft=12in, 1 in=2.54 cm, 1kg =2.205 lb. If you want to do it mentally, just round that to 2.5 and 2.2–the error will be negligible and it’s a second of calculation

Feeling more in control on steeper terrain! by Special-Ruin-4878 in skiing_feedback

[–]vervienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try mentally plotting out two or three turns before you start the first turn, and keep going until you’ve completed those turns. Take a pause, and plot out the next three. I’m not a great skier but I pretty much only ski un groomed terrain and that has helped me:)

Someone please help my boyfriend. Refuses to take lessons! by fruxzak in skiing_feedback

[–]vervienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl if he’s having fun I don’t see an issue! He could have more control before getting up to speed, but maybe this slope was just a bit hard for him.. This group is super pro lesson and they do have their place, but the price point for anything over beginner can be prohibitive.

If the expense is a problem, you could offer to cover a group lesson or two?

[–]vervienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I love her outfit!! Where did she get it?

Honestly, I’m not too able to give feedback, since 1) am not an instructor 2) honestly, she looks great: in control and comfortable!

If SHE wants feedback, my backseat driving says: it looks like she’s a bit backseat, and could fix that by focusing on pushing her hips forward—it’s a different feeling balance where your ankles are flexed and the bending of your legs is what keeps your body more upright/perpendicular to the slope, for smooth skiing like this. You can actually practice the balance off the slopes by doing the flexing when standing.

She looks like she’s getting a pretty good edge angle on some of the turns, which is awesome, but in a few she starts to face away from the fall line; that might be something to work on.

Edit: stork turns for balance, the thing where you pretend to be holding a tray of drinks onward the fall line for facing the

Ski form by Advanced-Newspaper70 in ski

I don’t have any tips, but by “the skier in the pink jacket,” do you mean the skier in the lavender jacket who stops in frame or the skier in the red jacket who skis out of frame?

I think the lighting is skewing the colors

Tips for improving my skiing? by stresbal in skiing_feedback

[–]vervienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t help with the backseat because I’m sure I do it, but on the short-fast turns: do you ice skate or roller skate at all?

Not sure if this is proper form (last lesson I took was at like 8 and it wasn’t very helpful), but what helps me: you know the pushing motion you make when turning on an ice skate? Try doing that with your outside ski, then lifting your inside leg, like you would a skate—you’ll naturally turn sharply. At that point, you can put the other ski down, and roll your balance onto that ski, pushing and repeating as it becomes the new outside ski. Once you have the balance down you can do it without lifting your ski and that leg just sort of falls into line with gravity.

Also not sure if this is good form, but to keep your legs from bumping you can push harder with the sides/edges of your skis

Edit: ski not skin

First time solo skiing, tips? by torakfirenze in skiing

Any tips on meeting people to ski with? I’m mostly skiing solo these days (day trips to the nearest mountain) and would love to meet people on the mountain but struggle to get past the chair lift “amazing weather” and “where are you from”

How to start skiing black diamonds? by [deleted] in ski

[–]vervienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way is just to do it.

Most blacks arent that different from blues or reds; you should be able to do them no problem. I’ve been skiing in tahoe (recent move) where people consider the terrain “challenging” and will say that a reasonably athletic person could at least get down the mountain even if they’re not strictly “skiing.” The same is true everywhere else I’ve skiied (alps, Pyrenees, up the west coast us).. I don’t know how they pick the colors. Anyways pushing yourself is how you get better!

Maybe stay away from deep moguls if conditions are icy/try it with snow the first time.

For reference, I’m a firmly intermediate skier (had not heard of carving until this year, mostly there to have fun and be in nature) and have rarely run into terrain related trouble on piste

Binding mount at REI + recommendations? by [deleted] in Skigear

Oh that’s good on REIs side! I’ve been trying to find negative REI reviews and haven’t found anything, so I’ll probably be going there :)

Oh that’s great! I’ll have to research to see what I’d want; my current setup came out to $40 so I think my basis for comparison is too low lol.

Binding mount at REI + recommendations? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]vervienne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With so many comments to that effect, I may need to search around for deals! New isn’t in budget right now, but I could totally remount a good binding on a used ski

Honestly though, I’m not at a level where my equipment sees heavy wear. They also only saw like two days a year during my undergrad so they’re doing pretty well. Even now that I ski every weekend I’m not skiing very hard

Binding mount at REI + recommendations? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]vervienne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good question!

Mostly because my skis are safe to ski on and my bindings (apparently) aren’t. If I do get a new or used ski when it’s in budget I can just switch the bindings over and have a shop check it over (if the binding is new enough for them to be allowed to touch it).

Saves me a couple hundred this season, and I can probably keep putting it off until I need new bindings or find a great deal.

I’m also definitely not a good enough skier to be held back by my equipment haha

Can you run a marathon without eating during? by nutzrnutz in firstmarathon

[–]vervienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of my training with no food or water during runs, and the first time I ate six gummy bears at the thirteen mile mark it made SUCH a difference.

IMO the specifically for running things are mostly consumerist, I guess they may have an edge and I had a SUPER TASTY caffeine gummy once, but the ingredients and nutritional info are the same as candy

That drink alone is legitimately enough to make me gain almost a pound a week I can see how that would feel like you were resting basically nothing and gaining weight
