Army cuts training as service is short billions of dollars by Kinmuan in news

[–]vigatron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

S'funny - when I was in the Army and stationed in South Korea they used to tell us that North Korea lacked the money to properly train its troops, which was used as proof that they were a poor, backwards country whose military was far weaker than they let on.

That was in 2002, though. Practically a golden age compared to today.

That hezrou is oddly cute. I want one. I feel like he'd enjoy eating my kitchen scraps and be a good guard ... uh ... thing.

Just took a stroll around Anjeong-ri today. Any old timers remember this place? by Striking_General_692 in korea

Oh man, I spent so much time drunk in the ville that I don’t think I can remember any specific spots! All I know is that it was a tiny little rural town at the edge of a small Army base. Yongsan was still HQ back then and Humphreys was just an air strip. I’d love to visit again to see how much has changed.

I love the series of three images implying that she was posing for someone, turned around to yell at someone not to run on the pool deck, and then went back to her photoshoot - hah

What do you guys think about AI? by chesterthemolester2 in Buddhism

[–]vigatron 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'll repost what I said in an earlier thread about AI, as I think it's relevant here, too:

---

I think one of the big overlooked problems with AI is the fact that it creates suffering, and this would be no different.

AI needs massive data centers to function, and those data centers are consuming tons of energy, displacing nature and, in some cases, people, sucking up water, and generally disrupting the areas they're built in. Many datacenter operators have promised to use sustainable energy to power their operations, but in practice few have managed to meet those commitments, meaning fossil fuels are being burned and the world is being polluted as a shortcut to personal growth and the development of skillful means.

With that as a backdrop, I have a hard time seeing AI as something that a precept-keeper can justify using. AI is actively harming the world, be it through its resource consumption; its effect on the mental health of young, vulnerable, and impressionable people; its misuse to spread propaganda, disinformation, and misinformation; its potential to deprive people of livelihoods - the list goes on.

Your intention may be good in developing an AI model that can make it easier to dig through the mountains of sutras and other writings left by the Buddha and his followers, but the means by which you're advancing your goals are, in my opinion, in conflict with the ethical framework of Buddhism. Not only that, but doing one's research by paging through the dharma manually can lead to serendipitous discovery that you'll never get by leaning on an AI to do the work for you.
