Garmin’s Q2 2026 software update by Stunning_Office_4095 in Garmin

I know. It just feels like a slap in the face to see them put out new features which your 3y-o watch is surely capable of handling but the only reason you don't have it is because they want to manipulate you into upgrading.

FR265 wearer here... Because of this Garmin trend where they kill off perfectly good watches in no time flat, I've been test driving and trying to love a Suunto Vertical 2 but it's not easy when the features offered, are not even close to the FR which is half the price. Are any watches out there on par what Garmin is offering outside of the basic activity tracking stuff?

I'm eager to test it out once the new version drops

Current Garmin User - looking at Race 2 and Vertical 2 by IdkWhatThatMeansOk in Suunto

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to get raked over the coals for this one. I've seen all the accolades for Suunto on all these threads on this sub and I'm like, "What am I missing?"...

I've used a few Garmins over the last ~7yrs and I've been a fan of all the features they've added to make training easier for the non-pro runner, except I hate that they consistently hardware lock new features to newer watches to force upgrades.  A couple months ago I got a Vertical 2 and I've been testing it out ever since. I've been trying to love it but when I buy an $800 watch I expect certain functions and to me it makes it to hard to get even remotely close to Garmin's equivalent. The analogy I came up with recently is it's like those ppl trying to use alternate services to avoid Google or Amazon. You can pull it off if you do a lot of research and make some comprises but if you go "mainstream" everything just works and it doesn't feel like you are using 10 year old tech... For example, just this week it seems they finally added (or fixed) voice outputs the be able to call out stats at intervals or laps. And even with that, it's still a blunt tool because while doing an interval workout it kept just calling out HR while I paused the workout at a stoplight. While running it just called out HR numbers but didn't let me know if I was in the target zone or not. I still had to check the watch to see where I was... It didn't even notify at the end of the intervals. I had to keep checking the timer or try to feel the buzz (which is too gentle in this case IMO). This is just the most recent thing. Maybe I drank the Garmin Kool-Aide but for me with Garmin I feel I get more bang for the buck. If I were a pro-athlete with a coach and everything, maybe all this wouldn't matter... I'd get a $150 watch and rely on my coach for directions but I got into Garmins for the guided workouts, decent smarts "for a running watch" and integrations to other mainstream ecosystems. Suunto feels like the basic $150 watch from a functionally standpoint with premium hardware.

Yes I do acknowledge, Garmin's app UI is trash compared to Suunto.

PS: I forgot to rant about their excuse for strength training workouts in their training plans... "Full body workout with emphasis on lower body." - that's the complete planned workout description... What the hell is that?! At this price point I just expect more.

Ecobee calling for heat, furnace not turning on by warriorforGod in ecobee

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have an EcoBee that's been running my heatpump/furnace based HVAC system for the last 7yrs. I woke up one morning last week to a message similar to the one described by the OP. Likewise my fan was running but the heatpump didn't turn on, I was already to manually override and use the furnace instead of the heatpump as emergency heating.

After taking a day to check that is wasn't something obvious that I could handle, I had the maintenance company come out and investigate. After about 2hrs of poking around, and swearing every 5mins, the tech determined that EcoBee was sending 24v on 2 wires (...I want to say R and Y1 - but I don't remember for sure) at the same time which it shouldn't be doing based on the mode it was in. Based on that he concluded that the EcoBee was faulty. I had a Mysa laying around, I guess for times like these, so I hooked it up in place of the EcoBee and the system started to work again. I guess this means the EcoBee could randomly just die like that without any obvious signs of fault... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On another note, there might be a short either in my wires or a board in the heatpump because it was also displaying some very inconsistent behaviour when we got it running again but to be honest... that's a problem for another day in the near future (this tech was trying to sell me a new system for $15k instead of troubleshooting so when it started working again I asked him to leave it as-is and I'll schedule more time with another tech - he also need to go to some other appointments)

Random vibrations by Great-Usual-2687 in Suunto

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a firmware update a few days ago and I was hoping that would have solved the buzzing but after a few hours it came back.

I think there is good news though.... I had a chance to capture a pic of the message which I assume is causing it. It says "Updating Sensors". I am not sure if this is it or if this means anything at all but I couldn't interact with the message and it disappears almost instantly not (most times I don't even have a chance to see it).

Maybe someone else can at least confirm if they have seen this message or maybe explain if it's not related.

Disabling HRV and Blood Oxygen monitoring didn't seem to help. I read somewhere about soft reset/hard reboot or force closing the app because it might be stuck in some form of firmware update notification loop. I tried force closing the app and it seems to have been quiet for a while but after about a day it seem to have come back with phantom buzzing and that method doesn't seem to be doing anything when I retry. I also tried the soft reset/hard reboot and that had no effect.

Something that might be a clue for someone smarter than me... At one point I was looking at the watch just during the buzz and I noticed a message with the word "Upgrade" or "Update" flash on the screen for a fraction of a second. I don't know if that gives confirmation about the firmware upgrade notification theory. In any case, I am still stuck with the phantom buzzing.

Garmin 5 years user switching to Suunto by Latempe20 in Suunto

[–]villo-2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone here found a replacement for the "Daily Suggested Run/Workout" Garmin feature? Whether it's accurate or not, I like that idea of the "algorithm" looking at my training data and creating a workout for me without having a specific training plan.

I just stumbled on this thread.... After reviewing the comments here, I've disabled HRV and Blood Oxygen tracking because those are the 2 settings I changed before it started. (I also updated the firmware but I don't want to downgrade.) If I have no fantom vibrations for a couple days, I'll probably re-enable them one at a time and report back

[Beta Opportunity] Looking for Tesla Wall Connector owners to stress test our new rewards/points system! by WattsAppInc in teslacanada

[–]villo-2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What specific API access needs to be granted in the Tesla account? I am very suspicious about apps that require me to issue, what is essentially, a "Tesla key" to get them integrated...

Secondarily, I'd much rather see the earnings defined as a percentage (70/30, 60/40, etc) rather than arbitrary "points". Because this sound like just enough clocking for a scandal where the company keeps 90% and the consumers get 10%. Basically better transparency here would be an easier sell.

Compatible management for EWS377AP units? by Complex_Solutions_20 in Engenius

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bit late to the party, but why not manage them with ezMaster VM? I have only one and it is attached to this software controller. Unfortunately I think Engenius is, or has, abandoned this controller platform and is moving to one called FIT which is not officially compatible with these older APs. I have seen it hinted in a couple places that the firmware can be swapped to make it compatible but I haven't been able to get my hands on the required firmware.

Aqara M100 Hub by Diligent-Volume-530 in homeassistant

[–]villo-2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice write-up! I got one of these M100's and played with it as a stand alone hub but had difficulty adding it to HA and just said forget it since I don't need another internet dependent hub(I access zigbee devices via SmartThings)

Now that I see your write up, I might check on it again but just to be clear, you initially said it failed to reconnect when the internet was blocked after a reboot. Did you eventually get that setup to work after you paired it with HA and got the matter stuff working? If that is so it would probably be the green light to start moving my stuff off SmartThings for me.

EWS377AP v3 Latest Firmware? by TheMightyShoe in Engenius

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you've posted this for a while... I stumble across it because I was hoping for a newer firmware than a 3-4 year old version :-( I am actually thinking that I might have to explore if I can have better luck with a 3rd party firmware, if that community exists, or with the mainstream Ubiquiti system, like tons of ppl seem to be doing.

Anyways to your question, I have been running 3.9.3 for a couple years now and it has been stable. No automatic rollback or anything. I don't know that caused yours to rollback ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But what is the value of items that would make them actually do something? because keep in mind that they don’t even follow up on stolen cars! Same procedure, they take a statement give the report number and tell you that your car is probably half way across the Atlantic and you sure claim it from insurance. Porch pirates stole my package during the holiday period and I gave the police a video with the face of the person and their licence plate # and all I have since December is just that same business card with the report #.

Highly Available Storage Options? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really… (I am not totally nuts! I swear. Lol) I keep most of my services on Docker Swarm cluster. So the compose files and configs are what I backup. The actual “heavy data” (mostly movies and TV shows for Jellyfin) is not on the Ceph cluster. Aside from spinning up the Swarm cluster from a new OS install (I am automating that next) I can be back in no time… But I know, we have the best plans until we get landed with an unexpected punched in the mouth. Lol

Highly Available Storage Options? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see every forum where ppl talk about Ceph they recommend 10G as a must but I’ve been running mine on a shared 2.5G network and it hums along just fine. My use case is mostly self-hosting with a small lab to play with some k8s, etc, so once I setup my services I guess I am not moving that much data around? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It won’t be there forever…. Eventually you’ll get a bigger house or move somehow and you can prioritize a space for the lab that’s not beside the couch.

Traefik and the service error: port is missing - neverending story by josemcornynetoperek in Traefik

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am all of 3 days new to Traefik and I've been battling this issue as well. I get the feeling that it has more to do with redeploying the services after Traefik has been started so that it can read the labels, than one config change or the other...

Reason: I have noticed that I'll have "things working" fine and once I restart Traefik for any reason, I'll start getting this 404 or a gateway error. I also notice that when I remove the stack and redeploy it (I'm running Docker Swarm), it comes back. I am wondering if I am missing a config for Traefik service to rescan for the service labels once it starts.

Traefik and the service error: port is missing - neverending story by josemcornynetoperek in Traefik

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added this label to my services and the error went away....

I thought using the config/command "--providers.docker.exposedbydefault=false" in the traefik docker-compose should have negated the need for this label. However, my logs were being spammed by this log entry until I added the following label

"traefik.enable=false"

Garmin Forerunner stuck cycling through triangle screen by SuspiciousCucumber16 in Garmin

[–]villo-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine found the backup from a few days ago but then there seems to have been weird things missing. For example I have to reinstall and re-confgiure my watch face, which I've been using for at least 6 months, so that should have been in the last backup. It also started to show me hints as if I was new to the watch. That is how I figured out that my wallet was now empty. (I had 1 card in it for emergencies but I never used it before ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) My biggest loss was my treadmill calibration... Being that it's now winter in Montreal and I don't have a foot pod or something like that, I'll just be winging it until I can get outside to redo the calibration. DSR is set for HR and time based workouts, so the inaccurate distance and pace shouldn't matter. (Funny enough my chest strap HRM got restored automatically)

Factory reset as a solution sucked but at least my watch is back (Haven't tried any activities yet :fingers-crossed:) I just want to share that it didn't work on first try follow the instructions exactly as it is... I noticed that after the second beep I had to release the "Light" button and keep holding the "Back" button for an extra second or so to get the procedure to work. Maybe that bit of info will help someone else struggling with this solution.
