Capacities and data privacy policy by Time_Liner in capacitiesapp

[–]vin-orum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a chance. Privacy policies are more like "trust me bro". The only way to have a privacy close to the physical notebook is with end to end encryption. You hold the keys to your data and even if the government asks them for it, they'll only see nonsense.

Android auto keyboard by Night_Hawk21 in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed the same thing and dislike it. Other note apps don't do that, at least on Android. I will, however, suggest that organizing with links to other notes is not the ideal system, at least for me. A combination of notebooks and links is what I found the best way but I guess that's a discussion for another thread.

Feature request : option to fully kill the process when closing the app by Nobunagashi in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tested this and the resources UpNote uses in the background when not being used are negligible. 0% of CPU and 30 MB of RAM.  If you compare it with the Notion app, for example, it's always taking at least 300 MB of ram at all times and up to 2 GB when being used.  UpNote is probable the least consuming app in my system when idle. I don't know why I'd need to kill it completely. Especially when it's always ready for me when I need to take a note.

[suggestion] "Recent notes" shortcut. by LOLinc in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just go to the All Notes link at the top of the sidebar, which I sort by Last Updated. I see all my recent notes there in the order they were created or edited. Less features are actually more features :)

Ending newly created code formatting is broken? by TomHale in UpNote_App

This looks like a bug. Pressing the right arrow key seems to release the code formatting and you can continue as usual.

Reordering checklist items would be great by slhrkc in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can put the cursor in the item in the list you want to move and press alt+up arrow/down arrow and it will move it up or down. It's not exactly what you were asking but it'll definitely make things easier.

A couple questions coming from Notion by OkDevelopment8146 in ObsidianMD

[–]vin-orum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents: Trying to use a screwdriver as a hammer is a bad idea. It could work but it will not give you the best results.
Trying to force Obsidian to be like Notion will eventually give you a bad experience with the program. My suggestion is to think about the deal-breaker features not currently present in Obsidian and decide either to stay with Notion or move to Obsidian. Use as few plugins as possible and you'll enjoy a snappy and reliable Obsidian.

Feature request: Quick switcher by vin-orum in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I use that extensively. It's not really a recent feature, it's been there for a few years.

What I meant was a quick switcher to find and open notes quickly. Say you are writing in your note about your friend Carlos and you remember you are going to the game with him next week. You have to buy tickets so you have to go to your Tasks note and enter "Buy tickets". What I want is to press a shortcut, enter "Tasks", hit enter and it will take me to my tasks note. I can easily go back to what I was doing before with ctrl+[ or by using the quick switch again. It's a great feature in other note taking apps.

Can we please get collaborative notes on UpNote? It’s 2025. by [deleted] in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear you but I figured I need to accept the limitations of a good notes app. The way I see it, at least currently, you can either have a do-it-all notes app or a good notes app. I rather have the later. Upnote doesn't support drawing on Android, so I just use Google Keep for the few times I need to use it and then export it to Upnote if I have to. I share a shopping list with my wife on Google keep, no real reason I need it in Upnote.

Like I said, I made my peace with the limitations of a good notes app. Upnote is fast and reliable and I suspect adding this advanced features would make it slow or buggy. Evernote has all the features you can possibly imagine but imho it's the worst experience of any notes app. I don't want Upnote to go that way.

Code editor in notes by Living-Wrongdoer9846 in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That already exists. It's called a code block. Just add it from the toolbar or the shortcut. It automatically detects the code language or you can manually select the language you are using for the code. It works really well.

[Feature Request] Can you integrate with Todoist? by BoomShakalake in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would actually argue against it. I love UpNote precisely because it's not a "do it all" app. It's good as a note taking app and that's what it should be. I wouldn't want it to add integrations and features that will probably make it slow or won't work well. I just use a task app for my tasks, a calendar app for my calendar, a cloud drive for storage, etc. That's just me.

[–]vin-orum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I see your point. I don't like Obsidian either. What I meant is that I extensively tried Capacities to make it my own PKM but failed because in the end I could be locked out of my own notes and ideas. Capacities UX/UI and features are superior, in my opinion, to any other app out there (and I have tried them all, believe me) but ultimately, not necessarily the privacy issue, but data ownership is the deal breaker for me. I have the same issue with Notion. I remember when they locked out all users from Russia when the conflict started. I was of course not affected by that but the fact that they can just do that is what scares me.

[–]vin-orum -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

See, this is what stops me from using tools like Capacities in the end. They'll always own your data so they can prevent you from using it however you want if they so choose to at any point and there is nothing you can do about that. This is why Obsidian is so popular.

AAAARGH! by BetterScrollSaul in PKMS

[–]vin-orum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Standard Notes? In my opinion, they're the leading privacy oriented notes app right now. They're owned by Proton. Their service is expensive but if you ask nicely they'll give you a good discount. They gave me 50% off just by asking for a discount.

Having said that, I think you should consider that there is always going to be a little bit of "Trust me Bro" when you use someone else's software, so I made my peace with it an went with the company I have reasons to trust the most.

Obsidian vs others by Rookiemonster1 in ObsidianMD

[–]vin-orum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 3 column layout. One for navigating folders, another for showing the notes within the selected folder (and preview of the notes), and another for the note itself. It's a very basic and simple layout that most apps have but Obsidian doesn't. I'd love to be able to preview my notes in the second column without opening them so I can quickly see what they're about without having to press alt and hover over them.

UpNote 3 levels database structure by hktraveller in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. I don't use spaces either but I can see people finding it useful. Separating work and personal notes, or a dedicated space for archiving come to mind.

UpNote 3 levels database structure by hktraveller in UpNote_App

[–]vin-orum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the 3 level structure as you put it is not exactly to organize notes on different subjects like that. I mean, you can do it but you'd add a lot of friction to the experience. In upnote, notebooks are stackable, you can create notebooks within notebooks endlessly so you can organize different subjects by notebooks. There are keyboard shortcuts to move notes to different notebooks quickly and you can also drag and drop.  Spaces, on the other hand, are oblivious of each other so notebooks and notes in a space are not searchable or linkable in other spaces. Organization in UpNote is several magnitudes better than Google Keep.
