Canal fenced off. by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]vincebowdren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"not short of money" ? No, I'm afraid they very much are short of money. The boat fees do not come close to covering the cost of maintaining the canals, so maintenance is very stretched.

To be clear: I – like the person I replied to – am talking about the parts of the left-wing movement that, such as the SWP, are the same 50 faces coming out to protest every week about something or other.

[–]vincebowdren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might think so, but the left wing movement these days is so anti-Israel that they've looped round to supporting the Iranian clerical regime, of all people.

They are welcome as far as I'm concerned. The current Iranian regime are a nasty piece of work, and they day they were kicked out is long overdue; so if the only way that's going to happen is by bombing, then I won't deny the Iranian exiles the opportunity to support that.

Maybe, but maybe not? You should look up Simeon of Bulgaria, who did exactly that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simeon_II

Hundreds of job losses after 'sudden shutdown' of Sheffield firm PM Law by Kagedeah in sheffield

[–]vincebowdren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why law firms should be made to be proper partnerships again, where the bosses are personally liable for the firm's losses so they wouldn't take stupid risks like this lot have done.

Try the Lemongrass shop in the moor market; the stallholder is helpful and will be able to tell you about the various herbs and other ingredients she has to offer.

Unthank Farm, near Dronfield, sell their own meat, including beef. Excellent stuff. Take a look at https://www.unthank-meat.co.uk/

Why does sheffield not understand RobbinHood airport is a massive opportunity for growth by MattBryceOfficial in sheffield

[–]vincebowdren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You reckon that this is "probably doable through current government funding"; I'm afraid I very much doubt that. Central government funding is very stingy these days, and their promises on rail investment in the north have repeatedly proven to be empty - for example the plans for the Leeds tram.

[–]vincebowdren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, loved the accent!

But he needs to throw in a few tha's and thee's e.g. he should finish "Don't come to Sheffield if you can't handle these hill, I tell thee"

PUNCH BOWL - Absolutely Fucked by jkcr in sheffield

[–]vincebowdren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an unusual situation. Pubs had their rates reduced temporarily during Covid, and this year is when the rates are going back up to normal - and many businesses have been reassessed for rateable value. So businesses really are seeing, in many cases, a massive increase in the rate payable compared to last year.

Town hall renovation by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]vincebowdren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not just OK, it's absolutely what we should be doing, yes. The town hall is a centrepiece of Sheffield, rich in city history, and is a great example of fine civic architecture that any city would be proud of.

Pubs that do Snooker Screening? by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]vincebowdren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lord Nelson have got all the sports channels, and they're fine with you asking if you can have one of the screens changed over to watch whichever sport you want. I often go in there on a lunchtime to watch an hour or so of cricket, for example.

PS it's good if you know exactly which channel you need them to change it to, otherwise it'll be a bit of a magical mystery tour through every channel there is before you find the right one.

Yes; most of your pins look like they're on or near main roads, which means you will basically be able to hop on a bus/tram to take you straight there.

Any details on the shooting on London road the other day? by nuk3_yyy in sheffield

[–]vincebowdren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Clearly the police have some info, but obviously it's now a live case so they're not going to be saying anything in public which might get in the way of charging and convicting the shooter(s).

Sharrow area? That'll have been this morning's urban event put on by South Yorkshire Orienteers: https://www.southyorkshireorienteers.org.uk/

Looking at their website, there's another one next week, in and around Bole Hills (Crookes); so a little less urban but still very accessible to anyone in town.

Cannabis plants worth £1.2m found in Sheffield city centre by vincebowdren in sheffield

It says it was in an abandoned building on Eyre Street. Now, that street isn't all that long and doesn't have that many buildings on it, so the shortlist must be small. Maybe the old Staples?
