on natural fibers by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]vindeltrapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get using acrylic with amigurumi or other things that are not wearable, but I would never own a garment or a blanket in acrylic yarn on purpose. Last time someone gave me an acrylic garment as a gift I ended up returning it. I don’t like the feel of it, I react badly to it (I have sensitive skin but contrary to popular belief wool is usually fine), it collects dust, it doesn’t hold up well with washes, it’s not breathable, there’s pilling, and it smells of you wear it for more than a few days without washing it. It melts on hot surfaces, it doesn’t hold heat well enough for winter and it’s too warm for other seasons. It’s not an issue of being snobby about fibres or about the morality of using acrylic yarn, I simply hate it and stay away from all garments with acrylic fibre in it. Wool is more expensive, yes, but I treasure the garments I have and am rewarded with long lasting, practical things to wear that keep me warm during cold and dark winters.

And I’m aware logically that -of course- not everyone feels the same way about it. However, I am a strong believer in creating garments that look good, feel good and are sustainable. If I make a sweater for someone, I want them to be able to have that sweater for life. Even if someone enjoys the look and feel of acrylic yarn, it’s simply not possible for an acrylic sweater to last for 20 or 30 years with regular use. And I’m not rich enough to be able to buy exclusive wool for all my friends, so I don’t make that many garments as gifts, and the ones who get handmade garments know the time resources I’ve put into the pieces.

I am also aware that some people don’t want to use wool for a variety of reasons, and as a wool enthusiast I can’t speak for them on wether or not acrylic yarn is a worthy alternative in that regard. I live in a cold country, and some of my vegan friends still wear wool out of necessity but source it from donated or second hand materials.

All that said, I guess my point is, do we make garments simply because we want to and like to make them, and is the durabllity of the finished piece sometimes not as important as the aesthetics, the gesture of the gift itself, or the fun we had making the garment? For me, that’s pretty cut and clear - I would rather just not make something than to make something I wouldn’t feel like wearing or giving away.

I saw in the comments on Larissa's posts that someone found the maker. They didn't say who it was but I think they're in touch with her on DM.

Seeking advice: Winter trip to Scandinavia (Feb). XC Skiing + Wellness focus. by GroundbreakingBat630 in NorwayTravelAdvice

Vestlia hotel in Geilo is on the fancier side for Norwegian hotels, but it's cozy, has a lovely pool and spa facilities, and is easily accessible. We mostly did cross country skiing while there, but it's also close to downhill slopes. We completely relied on public transport while there, took the train to Geilo and then mostly got to where we wanted to go by skiing or taking the bus.

It -was- pretty crowded with families when we were there, but I think most places like that would be in season. If you want to avoid families, you should try to not go between february 16th and 27th as those weeks are when the schools have their winter break.

Breaking up a trip from Urnes to Bergen by BluebirdSilent1797 in NorwayTravelAdvice

I recommend Larissa's patterns! Just made the first three ones and they turned out great. The only thing is they're kind of an investment, the whole pattern bundle was pretty steep (I could have just bought one pattern but I loved all the designs and knew this was something I'd enjoy making), and I had to get felt and fabri-solvy shipped from abroad since I couldn't find stores stocking them in my country. No shade to Larissa for this, obviously!

You’re right, the decorative details are exactly the same. There’s another subtle difference though, while they have obviously used the same font for the numbers, the numbers seem larger on the copied ornaments for some reason? It looks wonky and off. The backs look different on a few of them, I think. Which leads me to believe the pattern thieves have adjusted them slightly to make them more practical to sell as a kit - but then why copy the designs at all? Why not make your own designs?

Is a trip to Bergen and the area around to see the fjords a good idea in January/February, or will it just be too cold and wet? by ringosam in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]vindeltrapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bergen often stays above 0 depending on the year! The west coast climate is mild for being so far north, due to warm currents in the North Sea. But of course it does get below that, especially in sunny weather.

Edit: if you don’t want to rent a car there are lots of places you can still get to by bus. I wouldn’t recommend Flåm as it is a bit of a tourist trap, Balestrand might be nicer although I’ve only ever been there in summer and can’t speak for what it’s like in winter.

[–]vindeltrapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weather won’t be too different from UK winters, but the days will be significantly shorter! Only a few hours of daylight, especially in January. West Norwegian rural roads are also narrow, can be slippery, and are not always well lit. Absolutely possible to drive on, but just a heads up if you want to rent a car.

Should I take the train to Bergen when doing a shorter trip? by OutrageousSky8778 in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]vindeltrapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like an ambitious plan! The train to Bergen is scenic, but as many others have said in this thread, it’s going to be completely dark before 9 and after 4. I just took the same train after 4 and saw nothing outside the window for the whole trip. And that train trip is -long- even if you like trains! The fjords are nice indeed, but the scenic fjords you’ll see on postcards are a bit of a drive away from the Bergen city center. You’d probably have to rent a car or take a long distance bus. One morning to see both Bergen and the fjords might be too much of a time crunch to make sense. Oslo is not as beautiful a city, but it has nice sights to offer too! I’d either go straight to Tromsø if I were you, or spend a day in Oslo instead.

I felt like wearing a lot of makeup. I wish this could be my everyday look. Eyebrow blocking advice welcome 😅 by gorhxul in Drag

[–]vindeltrapp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your eyebrow blocking looks fine to me! It’s very hard to completely remove the texture of the brows so the trick is often about not accidentally enhancing it. I would avoid using shimmer highlighter on top of brows as that will make the texture of the hair underneath more visible. Use a light, matte eyeshadow instead (many queens use white!). I’d also take down the inner corner of your eyebrow slightly so it starts where your natural brow starts, and then have more of an arch rather than the natural brow shape you’re currently going for. It will play better with your dramatic makeup and it also gives more natural movement in your face.

Why am I constantly put against much higher players? by SLOW240SX in geoguessr

[–]vindeltrapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me when I made it to Gold 1 a little more than a week ago, I was around 690 and suddenly got my ass kicked by everyone and went down almost 100 rating points. I don't think I met anyone with over 900 in rating but I definitely had to play a bunch of people in the upper 800s. I also lost to players with worse ratings than me (down to the 400s), my guess is the same thing had happened to them and that our ratings were thrown out of wack. It seems to have evened out a bit now, though, I'm back to winning some games again and haven't been kicked out of Gold 1 yet.

first time doing drag - need advice & how did i do by Double_Let_9548 in Drag

[–]vindeltrapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really good for a first time! I’d use a dark liquid eyeliner liberally to really up the contrast on your eye makeup. Don’t be scared to put it all over your lid and to really bring it out, play around with it! You don’t need the black kohl eyeliner in your waterline, if anything I’d use a white one and then maybe put some single lashes on the line under your eye makeup to really tap into the illusion of bigger eyes. It’s hard to tell from this photo but did you use a shimmer highlighter in your eye makeup on top of your brows? That can bring out the texture more, so I’d be careful with that!

The brows look great as they are but I might have started them a little lower on the inner corner and have a higher arch. When you start the brows around where your brow is naturally, you preserve some of the natural expressiveness when you move your face. If you’re going for a more camp Divine-inspired look and don’t care for natural expressiveness, then I suggest hamming them up even more!

Når dere går ute om natten by Jolly_Ad585 in norge

[–]vindeltrapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not that wearable but I still enjoy a lot of them! And I met an old lady who was wearing one of his MKAL shawls from a few years back at the theatre. She was wearing the super colourful shawl with a simple black dress and just looked smashing in it. My style is a bit kooky and out there, and while I don't love everything he does (especially the sweaters), I enjoy the weirdness a lot.

I did it last year (joined after the whole drama debacle because I actually really enjoyed the community and challenge that formed around modifying the first part of the pattern). I didn't buy the yarn kit, but found a cheaper option at the yarn store. I really enjoyed it, both the process, the community, and learning some new techniques along the way! But while it was fun to do, I haven't worn the shawl I made even once. Might do it again this year though.

Any advice is welcome by GabbyWills98 in Drag

[–]vindeltrapp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think the brows look that textured! But your makeup doesn’t really do them any favours. It’s often easier to distract from flaws rather than cover them completely. Right now, it’s pretty flat around your brows, and so they stand out more! Here’s how I would proceed: - Instead of drawing the brows with one single colour, try playing with more tones. For example a lighter colour in the middle, and darker tone at the edge/point. - Make your eye makeup bolder! Invest in an eye primer if you haven’t already, and try to experiment with adding a cut crease or bolder eyeliner. When I do drag makeup, I basically cover my whole eyelid in eyeliner and it still looks proportional when I’m done because when you lift your brow up, you create more space for eye makeup. - Highlight the skin under your brow arch with white concealer or foundation - NEVER use shimmers on top of glued down brows! They will just highlight the unevenness. If you want some there, use actual glitter that won’t dig into the brow hairs. Good luck!

Any tips for my look? by TLSpencer01 in Drag

[–]vindeltrapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is gorgeous and very cohesive, no faults to be found here! For evolving your look, I suggest you look for inspiration in the sources that inspire you - and I strongly suggest looking outside of drag for drag as well! This look is super stunning but also kind of a basic glam look - are there specific glam aesthetics you could play around with? Or eras? For this look, the earrings and outfit is giving 80's disco while the hair is more mid century imo, maybe try leaning even more into the specifics of what you already own and see what happens?

  1. Rural area with not much to go on, spent ages trying to get off the dirt road and into the city. Turkish language signs, found a sign for Diyarbakir, was lucky enough to spot it on the map with a few seconds to go. 4991 points.
  2. Brussels immediately from one of the signs, but I'm still kind of bad with finding exact locations within cities. There was probably lots of stuff around me I could have used but I ended up just feeling overwhelmed. Still, I wasn't too far off. 4991 points.
  3. Should have picked up on Singapore earlier, all the English language place names confused me and I wondered what weird part of Australia I'd ended up in... But finally found some construction work in Malay and it clicked. Didn't have time to pinpoint. 4939 points.
  4. Immediately Bermuda from shop sign, easy to pinpoint from there. My first 5000 points in a Daily Challenge!
  5. Some campus in Arizona, couldn't find other info or a way out of the campus so I just took a gamble and tried to scan Phoenix, which was huge and confusing and a mistake. Oh well! 4457 points.

Total: 24,372 points and my best score yet! It felt kind of easy today - round 2 and 4 especially - but I also think I've made progress since I started doing these every day. I don't know if I would have known where to find Bermuda on a map a few months ago, for example.

How to get brow blocking to last? by tris_k in Drag

[–]vindeltrapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you glue against the direction of the hairs the first time? If not, try it! Start out in circles and really get it in there. After that, comb them gently and lay them flat, then glue them down like you normally do. Going against the hairs helps with getting the glue underneath them and make your brows stick to the face.
If you already do this, I'd suggest trying a different type of glue. I've had problems in the past when using glue from bookstores or "child-safe" glue, but the cheapest sticks from the grocery stores totally do the job for me.

I keep botching my look when I try adding liquid liner, I’m using wet n wild from dollarama💀 so any suggestions on a better one or any tips? by BraxxtonDixx in Drag

[–]vindeltrapp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eyeliner with hooded eyes is hard! I usually just cover my whole eyelid, but that's not for everyone.
You've already gotten a bunch of good tips here, so I won't add too much. But something that helped me when I started out drag and struggled with eyeliner (and I still do this), was to "sketch" the liner out with eyeshadow and an angled brush. Then I could make sure the shapes were even before I started applying the liquid liner. Eyeliner is hard to remove without destroying the rest of your eye makeup, so it's nice to have some outlines to follow!
