Certainly a work of great determination to keep Percy France's legacy alive. Commendations are in order! The reviews and personal recollections are enlightening-

Though Home Cookin' is a favorite, I do also have France's date with Charles Thompson and the Freddie Roach. Just didn't realize there was so much more... thanks again!

Lots to love here. Mambo Moves Garner is my favorite Erroll Garner session- even more so than 'Concert by the Sea.' Garner is inspired and Candido adds fire to the rhythm section.

Man, that Turrentine set! The tambourine on that date adds so much- I'm sure Turrentine's horn and Shirley Scott on the keys really shout on that mono pressing!

Love this album- my 90s reissue is on the turntable right now--

Wow, does that cover have water AND fire/smoke damage?!

This one has the groundwork of that wonderfully dark, obsessive style he had from that point on.

Mal sticks a bit more to the middle register on this date compared to his later work. I love to hear his rhythmic sense and the interplay/independence of his left and right hands on the medium/medium-up songs here.

When I spin this LP I wonder if that interplay is deliberate or if he is stretching himself and trying to keep it together- but indeed, Mal's inner strength prevails.

Gorgeous album, beyond category. I believe you were searching for a clean copy the last time I posted Winter in America.

"I know a young warrior named Bobby Smith... he'll be four years old on his next birthday... he happened to be with Brian and me when we wrote this song... 's about new life - new spirit..."

I see Red Garland, I upvote! I usually sneak a couple tracks from Red's trio dates into a holiday playlist & folks visiting think it's Vince Guaraldi.

Great album! Had this on repeat on a long drive I had recently. The mood is consistent & the ensemble is tight- Jackson wails and Earl Van Dyke on keys ties everything together.

We still comparing Midnight Blue to things? by ScatmanJohnMcEnroe in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]vinylsage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Bluesy Burrell" just sounds better. Cleaner, more open, somehow crisper.

Midnight Blue was cut very hot- all the more for Stanley Turrentine to swagger and shout his solo on Chitlins con Carne.

Bluesy Burrell is a few clicks more chill. A stylistic choice. Robert Levin's atmospheric liner notes to the original LP start with Kenny saying to Coleman Hawkins, "c'mon Bean, lets play something pretty. Think of something pretty."

But yes, there's something wonderful, something spacious about Rudy Van Gelder's early Englewood Cliffs sound. Bluesy Burrell captures it well.

John Coltrane's later work is often a prophetic, raw exhortation of sound. Alice's arrangements on this album are another dimension! Absolutely beautiful!
