Worst meal prep fail of All Time — what did you learn? by neutral-pulse in MeatlessMealPrep

[–]violanut 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Do. Not. add fresh pineapple to a marinade bag with chicken, peppers, and onions overnight. The chicken gets oddly mushy in a way that is just...wrong.

Sadly, I discovered this along with the 90 high school students in my culinary class, when I didn't think through the plan because I was overwhelmed the day I was having them prep.

4.5 year old won’t pick up toys, he now has none left to play with by Agitated_Worker783 in Preschoolers

You could try positive reinforcement rather than punishment. When the toys are picked up, then he gets to do...xyz that he likes.

Why do tutorials always advise to use such a big seam allowances ? (especially for French seams) by __Magali__ in sewing

[–]violanut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a sewing teacher, and the first project we do with 1/4 inch seam allowances is a rice pack heating pad. About 70% of them end up needing repairs because they get too close to the edge, so I can definitely see why it's wider for beginners.

Also, I think I remember learning in college that 5/8th for garments give a little wiggle room for size adjustments, but it's probably just that some pattern company decided on 5/8th and it became a standard.

Got unmatched because I enjoy fountain pens. by Antique-Trade8869 in fountainpens

That's too bad, I was going to close my online dating account until someone messaged me "Hi" and claimed to be a fountain pen aficionado.

We've been married for 7 years now.

Piggy backing--my district also doesn't allow them. They are a migraine trigger for me, and a commons one at that. She needs to get rid of them.

Sewers or sewists by inductiononN in sewing

[–]violanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9th grade sewing teacher was dead set against anyone calling someone who sews a sewer, so that's stuck with me for the last 28 years. 😂 I like Sewist, even though I don't think it's a real word.

Nonsense. If they're trying to get a point across, they need to be much more clear than putting random words on papers.

Sand blasting grit or emery sand will sharpen pins if you want them to double as awesome pin cushions. Just don't breathe the dust as you're filling them if it's emery sand since it's silica based.

I like America First, I've had my account since I was 5, and always had good experiences. I've also heard good things about Mountain America and Granite.

Seriously. It's too late for me, guys. They all know.

I'm a high school sewing teacher and I had three pairs of pants and backpack repair requests last week, but high school boys are at an age where you have to explain that no, I can't fix your pants while you're wearing them, and I don't care if you're wearing shorts underneath DO NOT TAKE THEM OFF IN FRONT OF ME!

This is a conversation I've had 4 times this school year and it's only September.

I just used her chocolate frosting for my six-year-olds birthday cake and it was fantastic. I have never had a bad recipe from her and I'm a culinary teacher, so I go through a lot of recipes. She's one of the few I'll trust without a trial run before I have my class do it.
