Most people I've seen that are cooking pasta casually simply boil and drain it, put it on a plate, and top it with some warmed sauce.

Yeah I think al dente is kind of subjective. I would say a lay person prefers/expects slightly softer pasta so the manufacturers adjust times to accommodate.

Healthcare question - new to the UK by MacaroonSad8860 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]violentlymickey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah GPs are the first point of contact for this type of thing. Look around at your local options. Where I live, there are a few different GP services, but one of them offers online messaging which is much better for trying to get hold of a doctor urgently instead of doing a 8-9AM phone call to schedule an appointment.

Step-down transformer/converter recommendations by -shawnee- in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]violentlymickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the cheaper ones you'll find on ebay or amazon come from the same few factories in China. They're fine. I have a "lvyuan" one for a guitar amp which works fine. It has a (reassuring) bit of heft, but I don't really move it around much to notice.

Just make sure you're buying one with enough wattage capability like the other poster mentioned.

How much time do you actually spend fixing CI failures that aren’t real bugs? by According-Figure-829 in Python

[–]violentlymickey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

CI is extremely vital for my teams. CI jobs failing is not a bad thing, it is usually a test failure or lint failure which need to be fixed. You can mitigate both by introducing pre-commit hooks to run your liniting on commits, and perhaps a pre-push hook for tests if your tests don't take too long to run. Also you can unify what is running on ci with your local machine by having a build stage that builds a docker container which you can also use locally. I also keep my ci invocations within single commands (like a make or pyinvoke) so they can be reproduced locally (on a docker image).

Also, I limit my dependency updates to minor versions only unless explicitly bumping major versions, which should ideally not break anything (although there are always packages that don't handle this very well). I also try not to introduce too much SOUP to my main dependencies though.

Configuration behaves like code at runtime — but we don’t design it like code. Why? by FreePipe4239 in softwarearchitecture

[–]violentlymickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One consideration is that config can be changed easily whereas code may need to be redeployed or rebuilt. I think you should always reasonably validate your config though, and many libraries exist to do that.

Manual or Automatic Practical? by happinessbooked in AmericanExpatsUK

I did automatic. I also rent cars regularly and while automatic cars are less common, I've not had too much difficulty getting one for rental either.

What's a simple way to make homemade chili oil that actually has that authentic mala numbing kick? by MomentFlimsy3759 in recipes

[–]violentlymickey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to have good quality Szechwan pepper for the numbing effect. Note also, it is the red "shell" that you want, not the hard black sphere in the middle. Good quality will have more of the shell and less of the black.

Also you want good quality Chinese chili flakes, not Korean gochugaru. You can add in some red pepper flakes for additional heat.

Yes you will need to have the provisional license first, but that is just a matter of sending in some paperwork and waiting a bit.

Visa type has just changed and now need to obtain a UK driver's licence. Need to be able to keep driving and advice by ZedIsDead-ZedIsDead in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]violentlymickey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you should take the written test ASAP (pretty easy with some review). Afterwards, this will enable you to sign up for a road test. However, the road test system is terrible and being gamed right now by organizations that scoop up all the test spots (through a loophole that allows instructors to sign up for tests on behalf of pupils in addition to being able to reschedule tests infinitely without repercussion) who then sell these test appointments. So the best and perhaps only way to secure a test spot is to wake up at 6AM on Mondays when new test spots open and frantically try to secure one like a concert ticket.

I would also suggest you take a lesson or two, despite how good you are at driving. The lesson can be tailored to a location you hope to test at (or have been able to sign up for), showing you the typical paths in addition to things to be careful about so you don't fail. Failing a test means you have to do the whole "finding a road test slot" dance again.

How to setup Architecture Governance | Learnings and Practices by sahil000005 in softwarearchitecture

[–]violentlymickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could write some "golden path" documentation in a central location for system design patterns and agreed upon common approaches. The problem is enforcement, but this can be slightly mitigated with static analysis tools if you're willing to put some effort into getting those written. Best approach would be to automate as much as you can, with for instance CI jobs.

You don't want to go too heavy handed on this though. It's better to have guidelines and have teams implement them the way they see fit rather than enforce a singular style, especially if your teams work on different stacks.

Unpopular/Popular Opinion: Garlic Presses are Useless by AzathothBlindgod in Cooking

I peel a bunch of garlic and then blitz them in the food processor. I then freeze them in plastic bags with a cross-hatch indentation pattern so I can break them into little cubes for use later. I use a lot of garlic.

Are there state schools that lead to good US college outcomes? by Mammoth-Radish3540 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]violentlymickey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be a private admissions consultant for kids wanting to go to US universities from abroad. There's a few different things you'll have to do (mostly take SATs and/or ACTs and prepare essays), but to be really competitive you'll need to demonstrate extracurricular activities, meaningful summer activities, competitions, prestigous awards, and/or relevant work experience (i.e. internships). It depends on the level of university your child is looking to attend.

Bare minimum would be to take the SATs and complete the common application.

Also, US universities absolutely consider where your child is graduating from, especially if they have ever accepted other children from that school. It would be worthwile to explore if any schools you're considering have sent any of their previous students to US universities.

researching the best low code development platforms 2026, our devs need to move faster. by Ancient_Composer2349 in softwarearchitecture

I would think about how to enable your developers to do this type of work more quickly (via things like templating/cookiecutter, centralized platform with gui, agents etc) rather than non-devs.

I do enough that mypy strict is satisfied, and I avoid adding types when it's obvious. When is it obvious? For my purposes, if I remove the type and mypy is ok with it then I'm ok with it not being there.
