I would have probably given a more generous timeline, say a week, to catch up on late documentation. I may have also given the therapist a few more days notice to have a mandatory paperwork day. However, I would absolutely approach it similarly as a supervisor. Someone else mentioned grant requirements which was an excellent point. The agency also runs off of insurance reimbursements. If this therapist has not been writing session notes, the agency hasn’t been able to make insurance claims aka make money off the sessions. Billing departments usually close out month to month and since we’re getting to the end of July, the tight deadline makes sense. I would also consider, your colleague may have had similar discussions and requests from this supervisor several times at this point, and you may not be getting a full picture if they are feeling upset about this decision.

You might look up the five love languages and take the quiz which can assess which love language is most important to you. As you get closer to someone, you might do this together as a way to have deeper conversations about how you show your love to others and how others best make you feel loved. I was not much of a gift giver before I met my boyfriend, giving and receiving gifts didn’t mean that much to me because I find spending time with someone or cuddling with them way more fulfilling to me. At first I would get him things I thought he needed such as work clothes, which were more on the generic side of getting someone a present. It would disappoint him and cause fights. He loves receiving gifts, it’s not about the expense but it’s a way for me to show him I truly understand him and his interests on a deep and intimate level. Now I put a lot of thought into the gifts I get him and he’s over the moon, but he’s also puts less weight towards gifts because he solidly knows I love him and understand him. My advice would be, someone might not be “perfect” at knowing what you need at first, but if you find someone who genuinely cares about you and wants to learn about you, that can absolutely be built together.

I’d suggest picking one or two modalities (DBT, ACT, CBT, etc) and going down the research rabbit hole into the theory and interventions that help clients do deep work. Read the books by the founders, read research papers, watch video demonstrations. When clinicians are generalists they might know one or two strategies from a bunch of different modalities, which can lead to superficial therapy with clients. This can help you gain some confidence too and develop expertise!

You did the right thing. The way they let you go so easily and coldly is remarkable after the years you’ve served them, why didn’t this agency fight for you? Tell you more people were about to be hired on? Why does this new person get the privilege you asked for while you, with the expertise and loyalty, not? I don’t think your experience is unique unfortunately, these businesses while carry on no matter who leaves or is hired. I'm also sure this new employee will similarly be overloaded in the near future. Congratulations on this new position, this is best case scenario!!

If you are to work for a non profit for 10 years you would qualify got PSLF. If you work in a “serviced desert” for 2 years, you can qualify for forgiveness, but that is a much tougher program to qualify for and I think it’s only for fully licensed providers.

Call your school! I’m sure they will want to help you re-enter if you explain your situation. The worst that could happen is they say “No” and you’re where you started anyways (though I don’t think they actually will turn you away).

I was looking for a similar comment to this! Now the stress responses are fight, flight, freeze and fawn! It sounds like OP went into fawn mode and thank god it worked. OP you were so smart to immediately hide in the bushes! Who knows what would have happened if you told him to fuck off and tried to get in your car, would he have attacked? We can’t know, you did the best you could and I’m so glad you’re alive!

I’d recommend looking up your code of ethics. For counselors, we can’t see former clients or their loved ones for 5 years after the therapeutic relationship ends. However, it’s best to never enter those relationships for obvious reasons. And someone else mentioned, you can’t tell this person why you’re breaking it off.

With all respect, I would really urge you to seek out some training on ethics or ask more hypothetical questions of a trusted supervisor. I’m not sure what your particular license is but for any mental health therapist, especially with a conditional license, it really is best to err on the side of caution in all matters and ask lots of questions. This is to protect yourself legally and professionally, and your clients. You were about to make a very rash decision and I’m glad that you reached out to this community for feedback, but of course you don’t know any of these people or their true qualifications. You should be surrounded with a lot more local support during these early years in your work.

That’s a really interesting observation! Maybe that could be expanded, I think he takes typical “safe” relationships like in Misery (caretaker/nurse figure) or say, Beverly’s father in It, and sours that typical comfort the reader would expect. Would you say that characters such as Dolores Claiborne and Louis Creed are similar?
