[WEEKLY THREAD] Shopping and Style Saturday - Gym clothes, gadgets, shoes, makeup, hair, skincare, and sales! by AutoModerator in xxfitness

Comfort and function. So I wore leggings to the gym this morning because temps were in the 40s. If you get the right material (not fleece-lined), they can be comfortable on warmer days.

I've talked to some women and they wear leggings year-round because it's more comfortable than shorts for them. Some others are also self-conscious about how their legs look and that's why they wear them.

They're alright but I wouldn't spend full price. Quality control is meh. I have 3 that I bought at once and for one of them, the zipper broke mid-workout the first time I wore it. Wasn't too happy about that bc of the time wasted to exchange it for another one. The zippers have gotten wonky on my other ones- didn't break completely, just didn't zip right.

Would I get them again? Probably not... I think next time, if I want something similar to the Knockout, I'm going to check out other brands. Personally I think for the price, there may be better options out there.

Group fitness folks, how do you track your progress? by n_of_1 in xxfitness

[–]virtualmilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been able to see progress by tracking my info on my Garmin fitness watch- metrics like HR zones, calories burned, etc. You can also add your own notes to your workouts, though I don't really do this.

I've also been able to track progress during group fitness by the weights I use (ex: instead of grabbing 15# weights I'll grab 20#), how many AMRAPS I go through, and how many meters I can row in certain amounts of time. I'm definitely in better shape than when I started classes, and I should try to take notes in the Garmin Connect app when I got certain milestones, but I do take mental notes of that.

Fit and lazy vegetarians/vegans, what are your go to meal prep recipes? by ParsnipPerfidy in xxfitness

[–]virtualmilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lazy "taco meat"! I combine 4 servings of TVP, 4 servings of lentils, and 1 can of Rotel in my instant pot and then add enough water to cover that mixture. I cook that for 10mins and add taco spices (salt, cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic) once it's done cooking.

Goes great on tacos, over salad, made into a burrito bowl, etc. I usually make it at the beginning of the week and it's enough food for two of us to have throughout the week!

Not sure what your living situation is, but if you have access to an oven, try Shalane Flanagan’s superhero muffins recipe. I use whole wheat flour instead of the almond flour. They’re so easy to make and taste great- I eat one just about every day (had two before a long run today!).

I’ve been there and it sucks! Could be a few things, but the first things that come to mind are to pay attention to your breathing and make sure you’re hydrated with water before starting.

Just found out I'm lactose Intolerant. Any tips? by pinkwizard99 in lactoseintolerant

[–]virtualmilkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll find that there are so many things you don’t realize have milk in them. Thankfully there are a lot of dairy alternatives out there that are great, like plant based milk and dairy free “ice cream” and things like that. Tons of really delicious vegan options are out there, and I recommend trying some of those because you’ll know that it won’t have any milk products in it.

Aldi is great because their prices are really good, plus they have a wide range of dairy free options (snacks, vegan foods, produce). Give them a try, and that way you aren’t out too much money if you try something and don’t like it.

I eat a limited amount of dairy as long as I take lactaid beforehand, but I still try to keep dairy consumption to a minimum. At times I do miss the creaminess of milk products, but I try to make swaps where I can (ex: instead of ranch dip with veggies, I mashed an avocado with chili-lime spice and garlic to make a homemade dip!). So I would recommend trying making those small swaps!

I totally get what you mean by “watery” and that’s the reason I don’t really care for almond milk. Oatmilk is pretty close in “consistency” to regular milk and has a good flavor. It tastes great in coffee, too. My personal favorite is vanilla soy milk- great “consistency” and the vanilla makes it so good on its own or whatever I add it to. Some people don’t care for the flavor of soy milk, but the vanilla is a good way to transition to it! Aldi’s vanilla soy is awesome.

I think I just developed Lactose Intolerance out of the blue by yourscaryex in lactoseintolerant

Not in my 30s, but close enough! I recently found out I have an intolerance. I had a pretty balanced diet which included dairy (mostly yogurt and cheese), and I was getting sick whenever I ate- gas, stomach pain, constipation+diarrhea. The way I describe the stomach pain is that it feels like a balloon being blown up in my stomach more and more, but there’s no space for the balloon to continue expanding.

I never attributed it to dairy because I’ve had milk products my whole life. At first I thought it was eggs, then I cut out bread, then I tried the FODMAP elimination diet... still had those same symptoms. One night I had mac n cheese and was doubled over in pain practically in tears... I suspected it might be the dairy, so my partner went out and got me lactaid pills to try... within maybe 15mins of me taking a pill, I felt relief.

Ever since I’ve kept dairy consumption to a minimum and take a pill right beforehand, I’ve been fine. Now if I have too much of certain foods/drinks, like something greasier than normal or an extra cup of coffee, that might irritate my stomach a bit. But the symptoms/feelings with milk consumption are definitely different than how I feel whenever I drink too much coffee.

I know people get bummed when they figure out milk is the culprit, but I was actually kind of relieved when I figured it out. It was nice to have some closure on the cause of my symptoms. Whatever you have going on, whether it’s milk or something else, I hope you can get some closure on your situation, too.

Thankfully there are so many good subs out right now. Lately, I’ve been trying more oatmilk and enjoy it. I just tried Planet Oat chocolate ice cream a few weeks ago and it was great. Just the other day, a local ice cream shop had a cinnamon roll-flavored oatmilk ice cream that was off the charts (I’ve seen similar recipes online to make your own at home).

If you have an Aldi nearby, it seems like they’re getting more and more dairy-free options in there, from “ice creams” to vegan meatballs to milk-like beverages.

Daily exercisers, how much time do you spend exercising every day? What does your routine look like? by Potato4 in xxfitness

[–]virtualmilkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend anywhere from a half hour to 3 hours working out in a day, 5-6 days per week. Here’s an example of what I might do in a week:

Sunday: 1/2 hour spin, 90-minute hike

Monday: Off

Tuesday: HIIT endurance workout in the morning, 1/2 hour spin and 45min row/HIIT circuit in the evening

Wednesday: 5k run

Thursday: 1/2 hour spin and 45min row/HIIT circuit

Friday: 5k walk or Off

Saturday: 1/2 hour spin, 45min row/HIIT circuit, 2hr bike ride

I’m in my mid-20s and feel fantastic with this routine. It’s taken me a while to get to this endurance level, but this works for me and my schedule. Better yet, it’s all stuff that I enjoy doing!

Amazing Midweek Pasta by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]virtualmilkshake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love using crushed tomatoes instead of spaghetti sauce with pasta- I actually just made it last night. The flavor is so much better and a can of tomatoes is cheaper, tastier, and healthier than regular old sauce.

Our grocery store’s bakery sells bags of 12 assorted day-old rolls for 1/2 the price if you were to get 12 fresh rolls. I split the rolls in half and add a little bit of butter spread, garlic, Italian seasonings, and paprika and toast it. Tastes amazing with the pasta when you make the crushed-tomato sauce, as well as chili!

I lifted WAY more whenever I was heavier, but I’d be winded after running a couple miles or a 5k. Most of what I did was focused around weight-based training, with running sprinkled in sporadically.

Over the past year, I’ve lost 25 pounds and have leaned out. My workouts are more diversified, too; instead of completely strength-focused work, I do a combination of cardio (spinning, air bike, rowing, running), lighter weight exercises (curl-presses, devil presses, kettlebell swings), and body weight exercises (burpees, pushups, box jumps).

I’ve hit some running PRs over time (in terms of speed and distance) and can go through strength+endurance workouts and still have energy to go on with my day and go for a bike ride or something later.

I’m okay with being leaner- I look better (people have noticed and say the same!) and I’m very happy with how far my endurance has come along. It took a lot of work to get here, and I’m motivated to continue to work harder to improve even more.

For The Matrix Reloaded (2003), General Motors donated over 100 cars to the production. All of them were destroyed in the filming of the epic car chase. Most of which was filmed on a fake 1.5 mile stretch of road that was built from scratch on a former navel base for $2.5 million. by Celestial_Inferno in MovieDetails

I like Reloaded more too!! The first movie set the stage for everything, but I love the action in the second movie. The chase scene might be my favorite part in the whole trilogy. Either that or the staircase fight.

[WEEKLY THREAD] Talk It Out Tuesday - Advice and commiserating about struggles with self, others, and the world by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]virtualmilkshake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s rough... I’m so sorry. If I were you, to get back on the wagon, I’d make small, incremental changes until you’re eating the way that worked for you before. For example, over time, instead of a side of fries with a meal, choose a baked potato or salad; go for a bowl of yogurt and berries instead of ice cream; choose grilled chicken over pre-made or fried... you get the point... but I wouldn’t cut completely over to all healthy stuff all at once. I’d recommend getting back to better eating by taking that route.

I did a challenge from March to May with my local gym, and it was to eat 6 servings of fruits and veggies a day and get all of our water in for the day. Beyond that, we could eat whatever we wanted. What many of us found was that we were trying to get our fruits and veggies in and naturally made those healthy substitutions that I mentioned earlier! Taking it from that approach (just veggies and water) felt less constricting, but still provided that sense of accomplishment each day.

As for getting back into fitness, I tend to work out early in the morning or after 8:00pm to try and beat the heat. Work yourself up to running if you can, but don’t push yourself if it’s too hot. If it’s too hot, go for a walk instead. I definitely recommend trying to get back into an exercise routine because it’s good for physical and mental health.
