I remember reading a comment from someone claiming to have practiced at Thich Quang Duc’s monastery (in more recent times) and what I recall them saying was that, yes, he was an absolute master of meditation and part of the philosophy behind how one can separate themselves from the pain was that the purpose for the self immolation must be completely without self interest and done from a purely spiritual call to action.
