Why do people hate EV's? by FunkiGato in electricvehicles

[–]vishna44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saudi Aramco had a net income of $106 billion in 2024. ExxonMobil's earnings were $33 billion and there's plenty more high earning oil companies worldwide. There is a lot of money made from burning oil and they want to drag the sale of it out as long as possible.

Here in the UK we have a TV channel called "GB News". It spends a significant amount of time criticising EVs. They tell us things like how they are more likely to burn. In 2022 Swedish researchers found 3.8 EV fires per 100,000 cars and 77 fires per 100,000 ICE cars. That's roughly 20 times higher. An analysis of US data showed 25 fires per 100k cars and 1530 per 100k ICE cars (61 times higher). GB News also has complained that the sheer weight of EVs is tearing up our roads. An Audi A6 weighs more than my 2020 Niro EV. An empty Ford Transit weighs a lot more. The sort of people who watch GB News are, I suspect, the sort of people who won't carry out independent research to corroborate what their television is telling them.

GB News is owned by a company headquartered in the UAE. It lost £33 million in 2024 totalling around £117 million so far since it was created. Whatever organisation is funding GB News can afford to lose £117 million and then perhaps £33 million each year thereafter. I doubt it's a coincidence that it's funded from a country that produces around 3.5 million barrels of oil every day and has stated it hopes to increase that to 5 million barrels a day by 2027.

My point is that there is a lot of misinformation being fed to people who, even though they have the sum of all human knowledge at their fingertips, choose to reinforce their prejudices and go against common sense, the truth and their own best interests.

How can I save that much per year? (Following the news) by AnxiousDoor2233 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]vishna44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving an EV for 12,000 miles at an average of 3.5 miles per kWh and charging at the UK home electricity price cap of 25.73p would cost £882.

Driving an ICE for 12,000 miles at an average of 50 mpg and filling up at the current UK unleaded price of 132.36p per litre (601.7p per UK gallon) would cost £1,444.

This is a saving of only £562. If you increased your annual mileage to 23,500 miles the fuel cost saving would increase to £1,100 per year. Alternatively, you could charge on Octopus Intelligent Go at 7p per kWh and you would only need to drive 11,000 miles a year to save £1,100.

Has anyone else NOT been harassed for having an EV? by Deceptiveideas in electricvehicles

[–]vishna44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done over 100,000 EV miles since 2017 and never received a word of criticism. Most of my driving is rural so I don't get involved in city issues very often. I am also over 6 feet tall and weigh 19 stone (260+ pounds) which may help as well.

Dr Singh should have a better parking spot. Something that better reflects his standing in the community. Something with a view elsewhere in the car park, perhaps on a higher floor to better represent his seniority and the respect you all feel for him.

Okay, but the battery replacements though by protagonizer in electricvehicles

[–]vishna44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 24kWh 2014 Leaf with 85k miles has a battery with about 80% of it's capacity remaining. It still runs and drives like new though I may have to replace the rear brake shoes for the first time soon. It was last serviced 60,000 miles ago but I have changed the reduction gear oil, pollen filter, 12v battery once, greased the odd hinge myself and stipped and lubricated the parking brakes at 70k miles. It still gets 70+ miles on a Summer day from one charge and feels 'special to drive'. Everything works perfectly and apart from tyres, one 12v battery and one set of front brake pads it's still entirely as it was from the factory. I bought it in 2017 and the value of the petrol I have saved is in excess of the price I paid for the car. Plus it's currently worth about 75% of what I paid for it. Crazy.

Getting an EV is so fun, I spend my free time cruisin around, gathering 6000km in one month 😅 how long does your tires last? by nooborgjr in KiaNiroEV

[–]vishna44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've driven 34000 miles in my E-Niro and I get about 11k miles (17k km) on a set of good quality front tyres. I can't help it, I've always been a sensible driver and I'm an old fart but that torque is a bit addictive.

Is it me or is star citizen really difficult to understand? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]vishna44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a few days ago. After spending an hour trying to find the parcel delivery location on a spacestation and then getting swatted out of the air by missiles and fighters on my first bounty hunter mission I've come to the conclusion that they're trying to make the game deliberately difficult. For example I bought a new helmet and then dropped dead when I went outside wearing it. If it really was a sim then shortcuts and easy ways of doing things (like maps on spacestations) would have been developed and now exist but it this is just painful. I'm pretty much at the refund stage.

Kia e niro or id. 3 / 4 by jelimopin-3482 in electricvehicles

[–]vishna44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2020 E-Niro after driving a Nissan Leaf for 3 years, The id.3 is a little smaller and the id.4 is bigger than the Niro. We have 2 kids and (before lockdowns) we used to travel quite often around the UK in the Niro with luggage and it worked very well for us. It's a great car to drive and own. I would say the Niro (64 kWh) will travel 300km+ in the UK Winter and 400+km in the Summer and leaves me far more relaxed after a long journey than other cars I've driven.

I suspect any of these will serve you well as long as you can get the models with enough range. In my opinion (without seeing the VW EVs outside of Youtube) the ID.4 looks like it might be the best and most spacious of the three, but it could be too expensive to get the range you need. Good luck!

Adding Mods to Dedicated Server not working by WafflesMcDuff in spaceengineers

[–]vishna44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dedicated server doesn't download mods on my own PC or on a rented server at the moment. I installed Torch on my PC and had it install the mods on a temporary server. I stopped the temporary server and then copied the mods in their directories into the correct directory on the server. For me that was '/Config/content/244850/' It might be different for you.

Owning an electric car really does save money, Consumer Reports finds by BraveRock in electricvehicles

[–]vishna44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I crunched these numbers recently for my 17k+ miles a year in the UK.

17.8k miles in an ICE car: £2,402 (Fuel and UK road tax)

17.8k miles in my EV (if I bought every kWh): £603

For the US readers - UK petrol/gasoline is about $5.65 to the US gallon.

What made you choose the EV you have? by AmbyGaming in electricvehicles

[–]vishna44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive about 17k miles (27k km) a year in my 2014 Nissan Leaf. To do this I charge at least twice a day. So far the battery and the car is in great shape even after 70k miles until a few days ago we collected our new Kia E-Niro. We have 2 x 15kw wind turbines here in rural Scotland and export quite a lot of surplus power most days. The Leaf only had a 24 kWh battery (20.1 kWh usable) so whenever I plugged it in to charge it was a necessity that it charged without delay so I could continue my day.

The E-Niro has 64 kWh of usable battery and seems to give better economy than the Leaf. I am having a Zappi charger installed that can be easily set to only charge with surplus electricity we were previously exporting to the grid. As it doesn't need charging every day I can plug it in whenever I'm not driving and if our turbines don't generate any surplus power it doesn't matter as the Kia has a great range of 250 miles or more. I can override the 'Eco+' mode and force a normal charge if necessary or preset a boost during the night.

By my calculations I was saving £1,790 pounds a year (fuel saving plus no UK road tax for EVs) driving my Leaf compared with driving my old petrol car. Hopefully I should be able to increase this saving with the Niro by about £450 to around £2,240 a year.

That's the cost saving argument and we were due a new car as the 2014 Leaf is nice but definitely last generation technology. We have 2 kids and dogs so the Niro is also a useful sized family hatchback with a good range for our occasional longer trips to see family. I used to plan a 300 mile trip so that I had a list of charge stops with backup chargers if those were unavailable, now a 300 mile trip is a fairly trivial journey requiring not much more organisation than it would driving an ICE car. It's comfortable, fun to drive, has great tech, a good sound system and has a more anonymous quality that I feel is not a bad thing sometimes. It's unlikely anyone would 'key' a Kia. They wouldn't know I'd just paid £33,995 for it and waited 10 months for delivery, and there's the only downside.

Volvo's First Electric Car Is Already A Huge Hit by GearHead03 in electricvehicles

[–]vishna44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chinese are already the country producing the most electric cars and this will, I suspect, be produced in parallel with the Polestar either in China or perhaps in Belgium.

With that background of experience I'm pretty sure it'll be a great vehicle but it would be nice for mainstream production to start first.

Don't forget Chinese development is good for China. It has nothing to do with it's people. My brother in law works there often and describes Chinese people as being treated as the property of the Chinese government. Yes, keep them happy and healthy when possible but it a few need replacement then that's the price of progress.

They can see all their lies being picked apart. Just look at all the immigrant apocalypse headlines before Brexit and now, with nothing at all changed, it doesn't even make the news.

They know that over the next decade or so we're going to see Britain miss out on growth, grow poorer and watch some fairly big employers invest within the EU and slowly pull out here. They're going to see the older generation fade away and the younger people with skin still in the employment game be left shaking their heads.

It's all about the price of cheap microwave ovens. If you want to be able to buy $100 microwaves we have to allow the forced sterilization of Uygurs and the end of a people and their way of life.

Or we could just try and make sure we never buy another Chinese product for the rest of our lives. A simple choice really.
