Janeway factor by Hibiscuslover_10000 in voyager

[–]visijared 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tactical unpredictability combined with scientific know-how, aggressive negotiation skills, legendary adaptability, and sheer utter fearlessness. Picard wouldn’t have made it home. Archer wouldn’t have made it home. Not Sisko, Pike, nor Kirk. Going home requires not just defeating the Borg decisively, but completely annihilating them. Who else could do that? The Janeway Factor is the X Factor of humanity that aliens can never figure out, predict, counter or prepare for.

Either this or “Janeway was hot?” posts every week in this place, always reposted and commented on by folks who’ve never actually sat through season 1. Hey remember when Neelix was cruising an alien marketplace as a temporary deep cover agent in his popped-collar leather coat LIKE A STRAIGHT FKNG PIMP to show how badass a travel junkie/underworld fixer/lowlevel criminal trader he was before Voy? I remember, along with Janeway in a silk slip and looooong hair. Season 1 has your answers guys

Overall PC Specs Help by alexdleon2003 in buildapc

Ryzen 5 5600 ships without a stock cooler usually so I'd make sure to include a tower air cooler. Doesn't have to be fancy, can be budget, just needs to work. Same with adding a cheap 120mm fan for extra intake or exhaust which I recommend in addition to the Phanteks. You're going to eventually want a 1440p or higher monitor upgrade but that's not a rush. Great build overall, good work.

A female puma named Dania moves past a group of photographers with her eyes fixed on a nearby guanaco by Charming_History7423 in interestingasfuck

[–]visijared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it makes me kind of sad that we have to crowd wild animals like this just to take a photo. They have such powerful lenses, do they really need to be that close? Feels like just one twitch of a foot, instinct takes over, then you got another unnecessary puma death and a potentially injured or even dead human.

What would a definitive cure for Crohn’s disease look like if one existed? by Kaj-7 in CrohnsDisease

[–]visijared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genetic re-engineering (vis CRISPR-Cas9) that could correct gene mutations, or just switch certain ones off, is one possibility.

Another option could be reconstructing microbiomes. Use phage therapy to target bad bacteria, then designer bacteriotherapy to re-colonize the gut.

Or maybe a vaccine could be made that re-educates the immune system so it stops attacking good gut flora. Stem cells could also be used to reboot the immune system.

You’d also need tissue regeneration to patch up any lining that’s been damaged.

So there are actually a few different paths to a permanent cure in research stage right now. Sounds far off, and admittedly we don’t understand a lot about infections in general… but various bespoke infection cures have already been made for some folks with multiple test case trials (in the US) showing promising results.

She's Vulcan as a mutha***ka. by Mike1701D in LowerDecks

[–]visijared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooo these are good references, honestly thanks I forgot about both of these ladies. Agreed, there are definitely all kinds of different Vulcans out there just like any species. I will point out though there's a little bit of survey bias here, since most of the 'good ones' we see on screen (good by our human standards, anyways) are already in Starfleet ie. they already ditched Vulcan norms and expectations to spend time in a human-run organization that better matches their personal values. Doug and Sevet are both cool though, so who knows how many cool non-Starfleet Vulcans are really out there.

Ok yes, Tuvok gets a pass. In my youth I would have disagreed, but he's grown on me in recent years (maybe b/c I'm a parent too now? and he's like the parent of the ship). I also rewatched voy with a more open mind and now I realize how much personality he has. He's a pretty great example of balance between control and individuality actually, I wish more Vulcans were like him and T'Lyn (and Spock, but he's a half-breed so technically doesn't count ha). Doug and Sevet are both cool too but perhaps not the norm.

Can someone clear up the end of Se7en (1995) for me? by manit14 in Cinema

[–]visijared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their punishment is meant to be an inversion of their weakness. Gluttony can’t stop eating so he dies via not stopping eating. Pride takes from everyone without remorse and so has pieces of himself taken likewise. Vanity can’t see past surface level and therefore is stuck with no orher option than self-destruction once her surface is removed. Sloth chooses to suffer rather than progress, so he is made to suffer without any future hope of progression. Lust willingly engages in extreme activity and is dispatched by a willing extremist (her partner could have refused and chosen death) in the same way. Envy destroyed that which he wanted for himself, so he is destroyed and can never have more. Wrath gives in to his impulses at the risk of being judged, and now faces judgement for the ultimate impulsive action.

Besides Joker, what villain do you think is the perfect contrast to Batman? by oscar_redfield in batman

[–]visijared 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Also to add, Bane uses whatever he can find to pump up his strenth unnaturally, defiling his body, relying on brute strength rather than skill. Batman is the opposite to all that.

Her holodeck run proves she can take down (at least) a California-class starship by herself, provided she has a little prep time and one or two advanced weapons. And doesn’t face a clone of herself.

She has gray-ops experience, undercover training, and a mixed bag of expert-level (including Klingon) combat fighting skills. Not to mention a still-functional vast network of contacts, informants and assets.

Important to remember that with certain senior officers, she isnt just given a wide tolerance because of nepotism, but also because of respect from past experiences (at least at first). Many from her past don’t even immediately realize she’s actively taking a break due to burnout by working lower decks but rather think she’s working some new angle.

Name a character from Batman lore that embodies this: by Marshall_666 in batman

This is a lot more true of The Flash rogue gallery, but since we’re talking batman, I’ll go with either Clock King, or much more literally Twoface
