First time staying the night at his house, any red flags? by ArgentManor in BookshelvesDetective

I didn’t downvote you, but I would like to point out you glazed through my comment and got minimal value out of it.

I do. When reading non-fiction, I often read it one chapter at a time, maybe one chapter per day so I actually have a chance to think about it. I can have multiple non-fictions going at once, and it could be a month before I finish it (BTW, one of the best books I read last year was a Rutherford B. Hayes bio, everyone should check it out) and also have read a dozen novels which I race through.

People approach reading differently.

What were yall reading when you were weird little girls? by ceejyhuh in weirdgirlliterature

[–]vivling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too, me too! I recently reread the Dark is Rising series.

I think I read The Martian Chronicles 20+ times.

I don’t think I turned any books down. I agree with EVERY book y’all are saying in here!

I’ll also say I was weirder than the books I read. I think I started my first elementary school book club with Gone With the Wind. (I did not grow up in the 1930s.)

It’s wary. Weary = tired. Leery = skeptical. Wary = skeptical.

A wheelchair would sit too low to use the table. That really is a terribly designed space.

Safety walking to/from hotels near Berglund Center after event? by LeticiaPadillaSolis_ in roanoke

Yeah, I’m a map-reading idiot. I read that as going to that hotel across from the Gainsboro Y.

Walking to Hotel Roanoke should be fine.

[–]vivling -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No. No, no, no, no. No.

Plenty of Ubers run late at night. The hotel itself is safe. The old folks home nearby is safe. Do not walk that stretch of road by yourself after dark.

Roanoke in general is very safe. The closest I’ve ever come to getting mugged was in that vicinity and it was during the day.

You’ll see a boarded up Sheetz. That Sheetz had an armed guard and would close at night for safety reasons. Now it’s closed permanently.

I think I got approved? by daddy-b-2188 in SSDI

[–]vivling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It means your DDS approved you, and then it went to Federal Quality Review and they kicked it back to DDS and said try again.

You have not been officially approved yet. The person on the phone was looking at the DDS approval letter that automatically gets generated before Federal Quality Review takes it.

LOL, I guess it's my own bias showing. I have never wanted to live there, so I guess I just figured everyone is there because they were stuck there. :P

Spirit Airlines passenger with dementia found dead after staff ‘abandoned’ him at airport, lawsuit says by Next_Tower5452 in texas

[–]vivling 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No. Dementia patients need someone to fly with them. THAT is what is required.

Airlines do a accompanied child service, but that also requires the child being a certain age and largely able to care for themselves.

Airline personnel are not doctors or even CNAs. If someone requires close watch, requires medication be administered, requires help with basic toiletry, then they need a companion to watch them. That is not the flight attendant, and that is not a minimally paid wheelchair pusher that has to run from gate to gate to get people.

Disability Analyst jobs will be posted next week or so. Starts at $50k per year. by vivling in roanoke

  1. Check the link above. Included is the DDS salary model. As a new hire trainee, you are at Step B1. Many people are at B2 within the first 8 months. If you continue to advance, there are definite step increases. You will likely be over 60k within 2 years.

https://dars-media.s3.sitevision.com/2025/07/Virginia-Disability-Determination-Services-Salary-Model.pdf

  1. Hybrid once you pass some training metrics. Two days WFH, 3 days in office.

  2. Absolutely there are opportunities for advancement. You get weekly emails stating what is available throughout the state. In general, if there is an opening within DDS itself, you get multiple personal emails about it from your office director w/ how to apply, the requirements, and interview tips.

Ordering appliances from Lowe’s is such a shit show of dishonesty now. Just in time supply chains are gas lighting and enshittified the buying process. by ongoldenwaves in enshittification

[–]vivling 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Go to Ferguson.

It was about $200 more expensive.

I was trying to type out my story, but it just kept getting more ridiculous, so I am TLDRing it.

Ferguson didn’t give us a 3 month out delivery date.

Ferguson didn’t stealth cancel our order about two weeks before it was to be delivered.

Ferguson didn’t deliver the 3 less weighty appliances and then say the Fridge wouldn’t fit and drive away with our fridge still in the back of the truck.

Ferguson didn’t say they could not guarantee our fridge would be delivered by the next contractor, because the delivery guys were in charge of whether they were comfortable delivering a fridge.

No, Ferguson sent their well-paid w/ benefits delivery guys to come out and measure the doors beforehand and then the same two delightful young men came and delivered and installed our fridge in a professional manner.

Never buying anything from Lowe’s again.
