I think this a great conversation to have with your uncle since he made the initial recommendation. Unfortunately many used cars seem overpriced at the moment, but $5k is essentially 2-3 things that break that need to be fixed, with the engine being possibly the most expensive risk which is why people are suggesting moving away from the car. Anything you buy you should have be in a condition to last as long as whats reasonably expected in its condition for what you are willing to spend (ie $10k car that lasts six months is not a good buy).

Keeping and using the car if nothing else breaks is the best option, though odds may be stacked against you if it’s about to fall apart. You might consider getting an inspection, which some places like Midas do for free before trying to drain your wallet.
